I'm having problems on a System 11 Black Knight Pinball, and I'm a pretty big noob. Thanks for helping understand the schematics a bit better and how to troubleshoot.

He probably just need the driver-side one replaced which is so much easier! I’m having the same problem on the passenger side and it is extremely difficult to get to just like he says! I also have a leak and have to get a new compressor so that might be a thing for you as well

Yes. I added an edit to the description when I posted the video. " I misstated in the video saying that there are 3 O2 sensors. There are 4. 2 upstream and 2 downstream."

I just want to say this is the best video out there for showing the location of the upper blend door actuator!! Maybe this comment will help save people some time: If you have a dual temp zone in your 2008-2012 escape - that is what this video is showing. 3 actuators. The drivers side actuator (located near the gas pedal) is called a mode door which controls the vents. The passenger side lower actuator near the glovebox is the blend door to control driver side temp control. And the one he’s showing here up behind the air bag is the passenger side temp control. If you have a base model escape, with no dual temp zones- there are only 2 actuators. The drivers side mode door near the gas pedal, and the passenger side blend door which is up behind the airbag. You won’t see the lower actuator. Why on earth they designed the base model this way and didn’t make the lower actuator control both sides of temp is beyond me. I was told 3-8 hours labour for this in a shop so I did some research ahead of time to see if I could do it myself.

Thanks for the feedback. I did not know that the Ford Escape's that do not have dual climate controls also utilize the actuator behind the dash! This is probably a more common replacement than I first thought. It's not easy, but worth the investment in the proper tools to help as much as possible when performing this replacement yourself.

Hi Matthew, what symptoms did you have to indicate you had a failed blend door actuator? I have a 09 and it makes a sound like a cricket and sparkling noises. Is this a symptom of a failing actuator? I don't seem to have any temp issues like hot not blowing hot or cold not blowing cold. Great info and thanks for posting this. Good job too!

Any way to send the segment data over to a PC, perhaps over serial?
@matthewjeannet9666
@matthewjeannet9666 Жыл бұрын
This display is not designed for this, but it is possible. The serial output would be a binary string. For example, the number 1 could be displayed as "01100000000000". With the 1's representing segments b and c. A more practical approach would be sending the LCD output data to serial. I have considered this and I am confident that it is possible but I do not know if it's worth the effort, board redesign, and determining which serial input interface would be practical. This doesn't fit the plug 'n play model that I was targeting.

Matthey jeannet, What does the diodes prevent on the switch matrix circuits they have diodes for each switch but what are those diodes preventing or doing?
@matthewjeannet9666
@matthewjeannet9666 3 жыл бұрын
Basically, the diode only allows the current to flow in one direction. Here is a good write up with more details: homepinballrepair.com/pinball-switch-lamp-matrix-troubleshooting/ "Each switch has an associated blocking diode as shown in Image 2. Since current can flow in only one direction through the diode, the result is isolation of the switch when it’s closed. If this isolation is lost the switch matrix will exhibit bizarre behavior. The root cause will be a reversed diode, shorted diode, switch improperly wired or diode lead touching one of the other switch lugs (this is common on switches where the pinball can hit them)."
@waynegram8907
@waynegram8907 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewjeannet9666 The diode is doing some type of Isolation when the switch is closed. If one switch is closed while all the other switches are OPEN, I'm not sure how the diode is providing isolation and blocking what to prevent a short. If two switches are CLOSED at the same time the diode is preventing a isolation and blocking a short, how so?
@matthewjeannet9666
@matthewjeannet9666 3 жыл бұрын
@@waynegram8907 That article can explain it better than I ever could. See image 4 with an example of two switches closed at the same time and the arrows that indicate the direction of the current, controlled by the diode. The pulses cycle through the switch matrix. "By cycling through each column sequentially, the system can differentiate between the switches in each column while the rows are separated by the blocking diodes. If a diode is shorted, or has been installed incorrectly, the system will get confused since the isolation between switches no longer exists. In Image 4 switch 43 is pulsed low at 8ms and switch 73 goes low at 14ms so even though they are in the same row, the system knows two different switches have been closed."
@waynegram8907
@waynegram8907 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewjeannet9666 I would think if the switches are OPEN without using diodes the System can differentiate between switches because the switch is OPEN which is blocking the pulses. The Pulsing is some type of Pulse Width Modulation PWM signal but I'm not sure how it can pulse different PWM signals for each switch because each switch has a different Duty cycle PWM that's how the System knows which switch number it is.
