I took Ridley's free online "master class". After 50 minutes of him just talking about himself and trying to sell, I gave up and signed out. He taught absolutely nothing! A waste of time. I am a good level intermediate player, and so I know enough to know he's just a baaaaaad representative of us players and teachers. Not clear how ppl actually buy into this bs...

My son has been learning piano for six years, and has passed Grade 6 and is now studying for Grade 8. He practices for about 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. He has passed Grade 5 theory and never learned a single Latin word nor any hieroglyphics. Stephen Ridley is a liar. Oh, and I had to listen to one of his incredibly annoying ads while typing this!

I am sorry, I`m Russian, not American or British and I might be wrong, but I play instruments and sing and love music, and isn`t this literally just BLOODY Axis of Awesome - 4 Four Chord Song (with song titles)?!!! That was relised like 15 years ago? kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6HMlaKhltCIaqs Latin, rather Italian words can be found all over the world in studying music, like staccato or lento) septima ecc.) But it`s not taught in Latin) My mysic school in my teen ages helped me a lot when I started learning Italian at the age of 30, but not Latin)

What you apparently have missed is that there is a big conspiracy. Piano playing is actually very simple, but elites make it very difficult. It starts with liking complexity ... 🙂

Thanks for the video! This is awesome stuff man! I will say this tho. Don't stress too much about the AI thing. Even though things are changing, our interest and NEED for music will not. We'll be fine. Worst case scenario, piano will "go to sleep." But it'll be revived.

Stephen: "I'm a convert pianist!" PianoTips: *Plays his same schtick but a but better* "Stop the cap, my good fellow. 🧐🧐🧐☕☕☕" "By the way, did you mean 'convert' or 'concert?' I heard 'convert.' 🤔🤔🤔" Stephen: "The answer is Yeah!"

Terrible singer. Who would pay $3000 to learn four chords? I assumed what he meant by learning piano was learning what he does in the ad, which is super basic piano for people that want to accompany themselves while singing pop songs. Not worth $3000.

Whaf does scientology have to do with this guys ad?

I actually feel bad for him tbh. I shouldn't, but I do. I can only imagine what it feels like to be a _living reason_ to buy KZbin premium. I mean, hell, I'm annoying as shit. And when I was younger, I was unfortunately worse. 😢 But even _I_ ain't that bad. 😂😂😂😂 Btw, hot take. It shouldn't cost any more than $600 to become a masterclass pianist. Change my mind. Lol.

For most people the traditional learning techniques are fine. For others alternatives and different ways in are needed. My partner reads music fine, I have always struggled to get my head round written music , despite years playing in bands and playing flute which obviously relies on reading music. Getting the muscle memory is a slow process and doing scales drives me crazy, I know others ( including actual brilliant players) in the same boat. However, paying £1000s to get to bashing out a few chords is stupid. If I wasn't playing flute I'd not be learning music as a 60yrs old, tried when I was 25 learning classical guitar, didn't work. I have worked with classically trained musicians who can't improvise , the otherside of the coin. Anyone can learn a few piano chords or guitar riffs by imitation you don't need to spend any money . BTW, the guy needs your money to pay for KZbin ads😂

Whether piano, oil painting, or writing... you get out of it what you put into it. If it takes no effort, you lose interest. Great analysis in this video. Best way to learn piano: good old lessons and practicing. Enjoy the journey.

You are absolutely right. In Serbia, we must first complete the Primary Music School for 6 years, then the Secondary Music School for 4 years, and then the Music Academy for 4 years. There is no shortcut!

I'm a piano teacher and came across the ridiculous ad on Instagram. It's actually very annoying and insulting. Worse still, it sells people lies. I've taught dozens of beginners using similar old school methods. These methods work.

I'm commenting because I want more people to see this video! I have studied classical piano for over 5 years and I'm currently learning music composition, like you said, these lies only make people think music is just "playing chords"... I'm a crappy guitar player. I don't know those "only 4 cods!" you need to play 100 songs. actually I don't know any cods or read music notes. i know no scales no keys and no latin. and yet I have my own crappy songs that I sang in front of 50 to 200 people and I paid 0 money for it. it is really all free out there for who ever wants to learn music. but the really, if you have 2000 dollars laying around, pay a teacher and NEVER fall to paying to and ad courses that have the words "free" "shortcut" or "master class" in them. please. awesome video. very easy to understand and fun. thank you for the explanation.

Quick side note - piano safari has an actual KZbin profile with playlists and I sometimes send links home for students to independently get more reinforcement if they don’t retain the rote pieces. I love this method but it definitely takes a commitment from the teacher to understand what it’s all about! But yes - I wouldn’t recommend as a DIY at home without instruction…

He's really teaching the Lazy Man's approach to piano. Next he'll be teaching "brain surgery in 4 easy steps with just 3 minutes of study everyday". "Hey beginners! Just watch my fingers and do what I do! That's all!" "And in no time you'll be playing at Carnegie Hall!" "Even Lang Lang will be proud of you!!."

Because he is like a coked up adhd con muppet. And now that I've actually heard him in your video, he couldn't sing to save his life. You're welcome.

The last online course that I've got cost me 10 bucks for a year (normally 40) and it is a drawing course. There are so many theory and assignments that after a few months of subscription I already have no time to draw everything. The curriculum is planned for three years, and it does require a lot of practice. There is just no way around this. Maybe soneone is super talented and already knows everything, but to make the actual job done does require time and effort! I really don't understand why people make false ads for their products. Well, advertize it then as a super fun funky way to simplify the hard things and to entertain people to death while they are supposed to do otherwise tedious work.
