There is no hardest skill in diving. It's entirely diver dependent. Some can't equalize. Some get claustrophobic from the mask itself. Some can't breathe through their mouth comfortably. Yes, this is a tough skill, but it may be nothing to some divers.

When you swim, it makes it significantly harder to diagnose trim and buoyancy issues. If you do it neutral without swimming, you can tell when someone’s feet are falling much faster. Needs to be done motionless… It looks from the video like you’re slightly foot heavy and the kicks are what’s keeping everything “trim.” This means that part of the force from your kick is applied in a vertical direction, so when you stop swimming, you’re too negative and start to sink. You should be neutral both while swimming and stationary…

Aloha from Hawaii. I struggled with skill so much. First in the pool. My brain would stop thinking the second there would be water in the mask. "Take a deep breath through your nose", it said!! So my first open water dive, I panicked and my instructor just held my hand and I just swam around. She said "some people never get over their fear". Terrible thing to tell me. I came back and watched this video. Did this over and over in our own pool. Then today I went back for another attempt at certification. My instructor had YEARS of experience. He said "You are going to do this." on the boat, he walked me through the steps. Then he said we are going to do the full mask removal on the bottom of the ocean. I honestly thought I was going to die. Well, I want to tell you, watching this video, not giving up, practicing on my own, and an instructor who believed in me made it all possible. So thank you. We all love your videos and are grateful you have chosen to share your calm and kind way of teaching with the world online. Thank you! A certified open water diver.

It helped me to close my eyes when I started to breathe out of my nose. And start blowing out my nose right before I look up (like he said no need to look down first, just straight ahead). Practicing breathing in through my mouth and our my nose with a snorkel and no mask helped too.

I really struggled with this, I had to take a few breaths to calm myself, then I had issues with my body not letting my breath out through my nose, I had to close my eyes to undo that reflex keeping my throat closed. And start blowing out your nose before you start looking up.

It has pissed me off/upset me for a long time that this was the _one_ thing that my brother couldn't do when we went to get certified, and he never went back to perform that one skill(and now it's too late and too much time has passed, so if he wants to get certified he has to start over from the beginning, classroom work included.)

Yeah that happens, but maybe give it one more go it will be so rewarding if it works this time :)

I thought this would be simple to do but after trying it on my 3rd dive today, it's so much harder than it looks. Im not very heavy so moving around the weight belt manipulates my weight so easily and I end up being pulled all over the place.

At 20:50 with the roman handshake can I check why deflating the bcd takes us back to the surface?
@nicoleahmed4 ай бұрын
Is it because we are only simulating going to the top? But in real life we would inflate to go to the top?
@nicoleahmed4 ай бұрын
Ah I've just seen in another comment - you recommend swimming up whilst deflating because air will expand on the way up?
@ScubaDivingTips2 ай бұрын
Yes correct, we use our legs to swim up and we deflate to let expanding air from the BCD, otherwise we might go to fast :)
@cesiumalloy4 ай бұрын
You should be able to do this while in a head down vertical position, while still clearing ears and still descending, if you can't then you are a liability. A lot of people can talk the talk, few can walk the walk.

If its a Brand new mask, it has a thin layer of plastic that fogs up the mask. When I was training to be a scuba diver, my istructor told me to burn the plastic. You burn it by holding it over a lighter for a copule of seconds.
@ScubaDivingTips2 ай бұрын
Yes it does work in most cases, but the downside is that when you burn/damage the mask then there is no return/warranty. So please perform on your own risk :)

I have struggled with this for a few weeks. I couldn’t get in the first pool day and had to blow 5-6 times. Instructor kept signaling I still had water in the bottom and needed to clear again. For me it’s as soon as the water touches my nostrils my brain says “breathe it in!” Which obviously is extremely uncomfortable and leads to a panicked rush to the top. Day two I didn’t want to do the skill in the deep end. I felt tears coming and panicked breathing at the surface. Tried it and same thing. Bailed to the top. Tried to explain the issue to my instructor (we had to swim in circles around the pool with no mask) and he said I could plug my nose with my fingers if that helped. And it did. But yesterday was my first ocean day. It was going to be the first skill under the surface. I let the new/different instructor know my stress. He had a not so great response (in my opinion) that I don’t “need to see” underwater. Before I could respond everyone descended and I got two feet before I full on panicked and cried. Cancelling my dive. There’s a lot of shame with it. Everyone saying “it’s so easy” when it isn’t for some people. Couple tips I’ve learned from videos. I’m definitely exhaling out my nose too hard and fast. Losing all my air which sets in the panic when it doesn’t fully clear. Pulling my mask too far away at the bottom causing air leakage. Tilting the head to look up with too much water causes water to surge into the nose. Trying again today alone at the beach. Praying identifying these issues helps. Thanks for the video!!

you exhaled in the mask and the air from your nose replaces the water as it escapes from the bottom of the mask

I have no problem with clearing water out of the mask in owd training and actual dive. The real pain in the ass was the mask removal and putting back on. Turns out I’ve been putting my mask wrong. I was taught to put the strap on first then pull down the mask. 😂 it’s really difficult to put it in place underwater and even more difficult to not get any water in my nose.
@ScubaDivingTips2 ай бұрын
Yeah, putting the mask before the strap is easier :)
