Canon law favours stability of appointment, and for good reasons! Ponder upon it.

Thank you, Archbishop! My guess is that the Missal is the same for the States as in Canada, and sometimes I think maybe I'm out of touch with hands clasped, but kept doing it based on what I saw the Deacon and Alter-boy doing. When my wife is with me on Sunday, we succumbed to the "everyone else is doing it this way", but just explained to her why we shouldn't...we can hold hands going across the parking lot!

The orans posture is older than Christianity. I’m a traditional Catholic but this is ridiculous. No wonder people think we are divisive.

These questions don't come up at TLM. The hand holding and forced hand shaking kept me outside of the church for over 30 years. A bunch of 12 to 15 year old brothers and sisters sitting next to each other forced to shake hands week after week as if they are pretending they are meeting someone new is too immeasurably stupid for words. A 14:year old boy who's not man enough yet to greet people in any normal way is not prepared mentally to have some wrinkled old man he's never seen before wants to hold his hand all the sudden. There is no place on earth this is normal or acceptable. Return to tradition where churches are full not empty.

Me from standing up after singing amen to moving back my chapel veil (i move it forward to cover my face during the transubstantiation) to receive communion: 🙏. My hands never move. I don’t break my praying to offer sign of peace. We should be worshipping God not talking to each other Last part i got from Father Adam who was the priest at St Joseph's in Crescent City

I was away from the Mass for many years. When I returned to the church, I thought this holding hands and raising hands and gathering in circles was so bizarre. I needed to find out the truth and found out about the Missal and the rubrics.

Some I've seen during mass, sign of peace, reciting the Our Father, parents - families holding hands also kissing one another.

The Orans position, with hands spread open in supplication, the priest does on our behalf. We, the lay faithful, are not expected to to assume the orans position. The only notable exception may be found in the rubrics of the Zaire Rite, the only known example of an inculturation of the Holy Mass in Ordinary Form.

When the lay people started lifting their hands with the priest there was an article in the Western Catholic Reporter addressing this. The answer was that when the priest lifts his hands, arms out - that is called the orans position and only the priest does it - the rest of the lay faithful should fold their hands in a prayerful position. I will smile at people at the sign of peace but I find it very distracting and there are parishioners still shaking hands at the 3rd recitation of "Lamb of God" 5:17

I'm in St. George's Parish of Post Falls, ID in the Diocese of Idaho. In the last 4-5 years we have had 3 different Parochial Vicars and 2 pastors. Our 1st pastor was a local man. He has retired. Our new pastor is from India. Our current Parochial Vicar happens to be his brother. He has applied for his green card and is looking to becoming a U.S. citizen. Our previous Parochial Vicar was also from India. He is now Pastor of St. Ann's in Bonner's Ferry, ID. This is a beautiful church in one of the prettiest towns you could hope to see. Our previous Parochial Vicar was from Tanzania, Africa. He is now in southern Idaho. BTW, he pronounced it Tan-zan-ya. He could see Mount Kilimanjaro from his home. All 3 have been very receptive to learning the American pronunciation of words. All 3 pronounced coheirs as co hairs. Trying to explain how to pronounce words with "ow" in them is a decided problem. Try snow and brown just for starters.

Thanking you God for this clear, sensitive, truth, expressing the need in every one of our parishes for financial assistance in our parish ministry and life of spreading the gospel. Help us become generous givers as we follow Christ and financially assist needs in our parishes in the Archdiocese of Grouard McLennan.

The rubrics in the Sacramentary, the forms and instructions from the Holy See for the governance of this most essential prayer that is for all of us, are meant as instructions for the presiding priest. There are not even any instructions that are specifically directed to the concelebrating priests, only for the presiding priest to inform him what sections are permissible for a concelebrate to say. That being the case, the rubrics never foresee instructions for, nor are they developed for the laity but only for the celebrant. To use the rubrics in the Sacramentary as a guide for what the laity should or shouldn’t do is, in my understanding, a misuse of a tool the Church provides. Cardinal Arinze’s advice to the Bishop was solid, but it was advice to him as a priest and about an instrument used for communal worship that is meant to guide his actions, not those of the laity.

I often wonder, if it's not appropriate for the layity to hold hands or raise their hands, why don't priests tell the people? I see it everywhere but nobody says anything.

A newer priest comes through and denied me a recommendation for taking classes Theology classes online at a catholic college up north. Even though I already have 3 college degrees. He refused and asked me to find another church closer to where I live that could better help. I had been going that since. 1988 and they dont even know who u are? I found a Saint Francis Church and never been happier .

The priest offers the Holy Sacrifice of Mass - the laity do not - they assist at Mass, beginning with their presence, and offering their prayers - in unity, through the priest, to God. In the orans posture, the priest gathers the faithful present into his arms and hands - as Christ does upon the Cross, and offers the prayers of the community to God. The public celebration of Mass is, among others, an act of unity - hence the term 'community', at which there has to be order and decorum and reverence. For individuals among the congregation to make their own orans posture is tantamount to an act of disunity, even a dismissal of the role of the priest . Equally, the prayers of the faithful are offered, through the priest, directly to God - this is known as a vertical emphasis; for individuals to holds hands with others creates instead a horizontal emphasis in the prayer. The public celebration of Mass is not - as another commentator here reminds us, about us - it is about God. The rubrics of the solemn liturgies are decided by the appropriate authority at the Vatican - the laity are not at liberty to make things up. As Chaitralisa123 alludes to in her comments, the most appropriate posture when praying in such settings is with the hands together in the manner of praying - no other hands together posture is in the manner of praying. Putting hands together in the praying posture also helps one to focus upon the prayer - especially since it takes some mental and physical effort to keep the hands joined in this manner - it becomes a discipline.

Also disturbing to me, is when they sing The Lord's Prayer! It's a Prayer, not a Song. Maybe I'm too rigid? As Pope Francis said? I don't remember in my early years doing this during the mass. It's a distraction, right before communion, some churches, they walk away from their seat to hug others, pause the mass for celebration, like if we're in a club.

@@PoisonShot20 , the same could, however, be said of other prayers. Prayers are commonly put to music because it is natural for humans to elaborate by means of music. Another example is the Creed and which is not even a prayer - it is a statement or a declaration of faith - yet it is put to music, in the same way as, for instance, national anthems are put to music - most of them (the UK's being one exception) are not prayers - rather, they are declarations of patriotism - putting them to music helps us to emphasise our allegiance with emotion. As for the social atmosphere at the sign of peace, I'm not surprised that you find it distracting - it is inappropriate and the behaviour shows a lack of formation on this ritual.

@@alanpontet1671 I think when we sing the "Prayers" the faithful doesn't think or concentrated on the words, the meaning of them. That is for me anyway, perhaps it's be side I'm ADHD big time? I can't do any work, if music is playing in the background, I can't read either. Sad, but I work around it. When I worked in construction ( NY) for a few years, I hated the music, that the guys played in their radios, most was on WPDH station, I think. All hard, heavy loud Rock in roll music. Lol! I live music, don't get me wrong, but to listen when I'm driving, If no one is talking in the car, and thee GPS lady is not telling me where to go, unless she mentioned your at your destination point, it's Heaven 😂! or when I'm by myself relaxing on the porch. But I degrees. Many Blessings and stay close to Our Lord, there's only one true destination , His Kingdom!

@@PoisonShot20 , there is the argument that when we sing the prayers in Latin we don't think about the words because (many or most of us) don't know what most of them mean - this enables us more to focus our minds upon God. Joining the hands in prayer helps to focus our minds upon what we are doing.

Your Grace, I have heard that 1 Corinthians 1:16 which says Paul baptized thr household of Stephanas, it implies if there are children in that household they could have beep baptized too because Jesus said do not stop the children from coming to me. But your explanation why we Catholic parents want our children to be baptized is very logical. Thank you so much for the explanation
