It's funny. I heard a few covers of this done on 'bright' basses like stingrays, but they all sounded dull. This sits so good in the mix and has real clarity. There's a reason so many choose the Precision bass. Also, you absolutely nailed this song. The playing and variations are great!! All whilst making it look so effortless.

@@CraigLearnsKorean Thanks for the kind words! On this kind of track with that really subby modern pop sound the P-Bass reigns supreme (to my ears anyway). @Scotty_A3 ай бұрын
May I ask what that is wrapped around the first fret?
@ChicagoBassBuddy3 ай бұрын
@@Scotty_A It’s a muting thing. It helps to reduce open string tuning a bit, but the real reason I use it is it makes open string notes sound more like fretted notes - especially helpful on songs like this with lots of open E’s!
@ReidBurgess3 ай бұрын
Great exercise, thanks! I have a couple of questions if that's cool. I notice that you're not sliding your index finger all the way up to the next note, rather you're sliding all your fingers up and fretting the next note with your pinky. Wouldn't this leave a "gap" in your slide between where you index finger ends up and the note your pinky is on since your index finger is providing the pressure for the slide? I'm also a little confused on sliding up when you move to the A string. Do you have to pluck the A string at the start of the slide to get sound out of it? (It doesn't look like you're doing that). Is the slide sound still coming from the E string? Thanks in advance!
@ChicagoBassBuddy3 ай бұрын
@@ReidBurgess Oh man, great questions! Somebody’s really digging in 😀🫡 You’re right that I’m sliding most of the way up and then going to my pinky. It does leave a tiny bit of a “gap,” but to my ears it’s pretty subtle, and I like the idea that if I was improvising and wanted to then stay in that position rather than slide back down I’d be set up to do so. You could totally slide up and down with one finger though and it might be even smoother for you! When I’m crossing strings I slide up on the string the last note was on and then hitting the next note on the higher string. So if I’m hitting a note on the E string and then sliding to something on the A string, the actual slide is happening on the E string. Does that make sense? The way I’m thinking about it is that I’m always sliding from the last note, and then hitting the new note wherever it’s at (whatever fret, whatever string), so I’m sliding “from the last note” rather than sliding “into the next note” Hopefully that helps! Lemme know if you have follow-up questions. Happy practicing ☺️

Hey Jonathan! Great question - I’m thinking of all 3 - the notes (A, B, C# etc), the finger pattern, and most importantly the sound. In my mind, the goal is always to think in terms of sound as much as possible. Like when you whistle: you don’t have to think about the notes, you just hear them in your head and it comes out on its own. Hope that helps! And thanks as always for watching and for your support - you rock 🎸
