Nathaniel, you can take a populist approach while also being a labour party, right? Why do you say otherwise? Instead of being anti-intellectual and using relatable language, you're just anti-super-rich-assholes-getting-richer-off-the-backs-of-workers while using relatable language. I do not understand why these are mutually exclusive ideas but, I am also not a political super smartypants.

All they had to do is listen. People told them where this was all headed for a long time. They decided that they were above criticism. They ignored what people were saying and doubled down. And they started believing in their own version of reality. Its actually quite impressive. It takes a lot to turn unionized and low wage workers towards a Conservative party during a cost of living crisis. Well done NDP, well done. They were taken over by academics and people who work for government unions. Basically, people that earn high wages in recession proof jobs. They were willing to undercut everyone else's wages with mass immigration and foreign workers because those policies are not impacting them negatively. Which is, kind of similar to the behavior that many people associate with Conservatives. Side note : You're way too eager to dismiss Sam Cooper, and you're only making yourself look bad trying. The LPC has serious issues with foreign interference, and anyone who looks at the evidence knows that. Unless you think its not a bit odd how Dong suddenly developed amnesia once he was under oath.
@DavePerry-h5rАй бұрын
Pretty good analysis. Subbed. I'd push back a bit on putting the immigration situation squarely on Fraser, because he was handed a mandate letter at the beginning of his job that outlined the expectations. He was probably following orders, just like his successor is. This is a very top down government. This situation was all preventable. All the Liberals had to do is listen to their critics, instead of dismissing them all and carrying on with policies that should have been open to legitimate debate. When it comes to immigration in particular, and the impact that its had on population growth and thus housing, making baseless accusations of racism was not a smart response. And you're correct, that will be Trudeau's legacy. He inherited power in a country that was very welcoming towards immigration, due to prior governments doing immigration right. Now public opinion is turning against immigration, because Trudeau did it with no regard for housing or infrastructure, and then dismissed people who questioned the policy as racists. Hopefully this doesn't continue for another year. Canada needs a change.

Really? Number one, its NOT 'the liberal party'. We have a MINORITY government, which is about as good as it gets. The main peopel who don't think that are those who don't follow legislation AT ALL, which is most people. Like any government there will be crap you agree with and crap you don't. Its true I have NO idea why Trudeau is staying in power, but only losing the by election by 600 votes may be a key. The only other reason I can think of is that he's just fulfilling an obligation so that people have something concrete to blame EVERYTHING on, which is nuts, but it helps preserve the status quo, so poeople will think 'well, everything is fine now that he's gone'. There's certainly been a number of liberal legislations I haven't liked, but the fact is minority governments are ALWAYS better. Somebody name me ONE thing that Pollievre has said he'll do that will improve anything. Because on the personality scale, the guy is even more odious than Trudeau.

Nice to see some realistic discussion about the Liberal Party. You are, however, a bigger person than I because I cannot in good conscience support the LP any longer. Gone are the days of holding my nose and voting for them DESPITE my family not being helped by a single policy of theirs for the last 9 years. JT can take his diversity spiel and shove it where his Sunny Ways don't shine. His immigration policies have helped destroy the GTA. Thanks to JT (and Ford), health care wait times are abysmal. The recent precedent set by the LP regarding the rail lockout was the final straw. For the 1st time in my life, I will be abstaining in a Fed election. There are simply no good options for a middle class voter. None.
@mikearchibald744Ай бұрын
Wait times in Ontario were horrific LONG before Trudeau or even Ford. I'm no fan of Trudeau but he has POURED money into the provinces for healthcare and they refuse because they are busy privatizing them. Canadians don't vote for parties, they vote against them. And if you don't know how bad the conservatives will be, you should go find out.

What's progressive values? Riding over old ladies with RCMP mounted cops? Pointing scary rifles from rooftops at peaceful protesters. Seizing the bank accounts of peaceful protesters, and their supporters. Forcing people to take untested, and unproven medical procedures. Ostracizing millions of Canadians who don't take the forced shots. Fortifying elections. Allowing extreme excessive mass immigration. Inflating the currency beyond recognition. Allowing criminals to commit violent crime and get out on bail to do it again. Seizing to legally owned firearms of lawful firearms owners. Tanking the economy with excessive regulation, and government manipulation. Never opposing any new propsed tax idea ever. Which of these things is progressivism?

I mean I think y'all pretty much nailed it. I think its either wisconsin or nevada that goes this year(if there is a swing state to go). Nevada is pretty much a culmination of the worst trends for the democrats if the polls and recent elections have shown anything(low education, heavily diverse state). I think democrats are overestimating themselves in WI. It continues to trend rightward relative to the national environment, and it proves itself to consistently be the most right wing of the 3. Democrats are still far overshooting their demographics there, plenty of areas in WI that should be like r+30-40 that are like r+15.

The objective is not just to come into power and form government, but the objective is also to keep said power. Sure, you can in principle advocate for an ambitious emission-reductions program that does not include a carbon tax, but any such alternative policies will be more economically costly to implement or else will not achieve as steep reductions. So in that case, a Liberal government would just be creating problems for itself if the economy is not as strong as it could be or if the progress on emissions seems weak. The carbon tax has the political problem of its upfront cost being visible and transparent to the public. But that does not mean that the alternatives are going to be much easier to defend, because the Conservatives are still going to find ways to calculate the costs and accuse the government of manufacturing costs for consumers, and you cannot credibly deny that cap-and-trade, subsidy, or regulatory programs will also affect consumers. And independent analyses by think tanks or by the Parliamentary Budget Officer are not going to be more favourable than they are with the current programs. My disappointment with the OLP Leader is not so much that she announced that she will not consider a carbon tax policy, but when she chose to announce her rejection. It was only a short while ago that she announced an openness to considering carbon taxes, and it seems that a membership consultation process is only months away, so why did she not wait for the latter before deciding? She would not have lost any votes by waiting for a few more months.

A factor regarding African-American turnout is that Mandela Barnes is black, which probably will help, the question is if it will help enough. Also I think Democrats are hoping for Johnson will meet the same fate as Santorum in 2006, but things are very different now. His remarks accelerating WOW movement towards Democrats would be the only path to get there.

The lesson the public (and I think the polling industry) took from 2020 was that Republicans beat their polls in every circumstance in every location, so they're bending over backwards to make that not happen. And that's not what happened or what went wrong. The VA presidential polling was less than 2 points off, but people are acting like everywhere had a WI-sized miss. I disagree with you Evan that polling is inherently broken, but I think the pollsters are actively breaking it. All of these pollsters showing a tight VA-gov race, and none of them agree on the crosstabs or electorates! Polling doesn't seem to be giving us a prediction of the electorate; it's pushing a narrative.
