Oh no. A. little too late mine came yesterday and the battery is charging. I was looking at the power cap which is supposed to be lighter but everywhere I looked Anister didn't sell to the states. So I just looked it up to find the name and I see one for $579 put it in my cart and it did not bounce so I guess they sell in the States. What is the saying "if it was not for bad luck I would have no luck at all".

It's funny listening to people nit pick little things while I'm using a shop smith knock off lol. His complaints would be my pros lol. I'm getting a new lathe. I just wanted to see if I would like it. So it only cost me 150 instead of paying 1200 to 2k then deciding I didn't want to do it. Plus I can always use it's other features maybe the drill press.

Yeah sometimes "nit picking" can be silly. However, for some people that one "nit" is just too much of an annoyance that it makes the person looking to buy the product realize they should go with the other machine. I don't know if you've seen my other videos, where I started my channel on a $150 WEN machine, before moving to the Laguna. I did a lot of research to replace the WEN and the nit picking by others helped me make my choice. I almost purchased a JET 1221, glad I didn't. I'm happy with this machine, even with the minor... "nits" LOL. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Very nice video! Unfortunately I can't reference it in our monthly newsletter because at around 9:32 (and several other times) you are shown truing up a face grain blank using a SPINDLE ROUGHING GOUGE. This should never be done, and thus because of these unsafe techniques shown, we can't recommend the video. You may want to re-shoot, or remove the use of the spipndle roughing gouge segments and then re-post the majority of the video.

Hello, I appreciate the feedback. In this video, and many others, the heavy 1 inch bowl gouge looks like a roughing gouge. At 3:24 in this video you should clearly see the profile. I really like the heavy 1 inch Hurricane bowl gouge for roughing. However, about 3 years ago when I first started out, I didn't know any better (what any of the tool names were) and I did use spindle roughing gouge on end grain. You bring up an interesting point, I was the one looking for feedback and instructions on what I was doing wrong... NOW... I can see how others might view my videos as instructional or insight on turning. I will have to go back and remove or as you say reshoot/remake the videos. Thanks for the advice

@@movingchips - Thankyou for this effort. I chaired the AAW Safety Committee, and one must assume that posted videos are educational material. I have seen my share of images sent to me of broken Spindle Roughing Houges from using them on end grain; it is very clear that the hazard is real. Other than these short segments when the SRG is being used, the video is fine. Perhaps those few segments could be edited or clipped without the need to re-shoot the entire thing?

My Wen 3420 had almost the same problem as yours. Last week, it would stop turning on light cuts and finally lost speed. Wen dealer was sold out on the speed control box, which cost $29. My problem was a bad capacitor, I changed all six capacitors on the circuit board, and the lathe was back to working okay. I will upgrade to a Laguna 1216 like you, There is currently a 8 month manufacturers wait on them, delivery on June 2024, but price came down a bit on them at $899.

@@movingchips I have known pieces of wood to move when being drilled when held as you held this piece. I think the noise was from the blank having moved very slightly so the live center wasn't seated properly in the hole. If I'm drilling something like that I slacken off the jaws put the live center in and push it home then retighten the jaws. I understand why you didn't turn a full tenon but that could have been an issue. Hope this helps but I could be totally wrong LOL.

Nice review, I have same lathe, about 6 months now. Now it blows fuse ever time I turn it on. Laguna is telling me I have to buy a voltage regulator for it before they will do anything. Has anyone had this problem. I love the lathe but I know everyone is not going out and buying voltage regulators to use. My dealer I bought it from thinks it’s the control board. Been running it now for 6 months with no problems.
@movingchips
@movingchips Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that. I have not had an issue with power or fuses (knock on wood). Sounds like a frustrating situation and if I were faced with the same problem, I might ask neighbors/friends if they know of an electrician that would check out my electrical feed from the main panel to the lathe and if they had a voltage meter to confirm.... for free (if its a friend) or low expense (if recommended). Electricity is one thing I don't mess with, for safety reasons. I don't want to get hurt myself or burn the house down. Good luck and let me know what you find out. Thanks

The acrylic blanks are very soft. I would think the eyes would pull out if you ever had a big fish on. Have you caught anything on it yet? One idea might be to cut a channel in the lure and run a wire from the tip to the end, and then refill it with epoxy.

Nice video. I noticed you used OB Shine Juice on one of the stands. I think that is made from linseed oil if I'm correct. If so, I would caution not to use it for this type of project. Linseed oil can carry its smell for some time going forward. Often times cancer patients have enough problems and don't need these additional odors which for some can be offensive. I'm also making some wig stands along with our local club to donate. Thanks, Myles
@movingchips
@movingchips Жыл бұрын
I think wig stands are a fantastic project and for a good cause. I agree with the linseed oil being amongst the smelly finishing solutions us turners use. I found that the OB Shine Juice (which is diluted with denatured alcohol and shellac) as well as Ack's Abrasive Paste are the best odorless finishes I have used so far. Although I save the Ack's for bowls, plates, etc because its food safe. Ack's would work fine for this project too. My cousin, (who is a cancer survivor) was very happy to receive one of these for her wig, at the time of her ordeal. I'd love to see your work, if you can send me a picture/link. Thank you for the comment.

Just lop a few millimeters off the tool rest base (or banjo) with an angle grinder. How hard can it be? I've got many different and bigger issues with this machine, not the least the lowest spindle speed which is already a ridiculous 750 rpm, and the weak motor and the lack of mechanical speed reduction. The smallest cheapest lathe you can realistically get away with is "the" *Grizzly T25920,* or a version of that generic Chinese export pattern from any other vendor. But you need to make sure you get the _latest low speed version_ with the 300 rpm entry speed because older versions started out at 650 rpm as well.

Hi! Nice review, I like your critical edge!👍 I have this very same lathe and thinking about getting a matching stand, too. It's quite pricey but looks nice. What are your thoughts, is the lathe better placed on a benchtop or table or is it more practical on its designated stand? I live in an apartment where space is limited, and a stand would have it's pros and cons, too. It's a definite pro that on a stand it would be easy to roll the lathe out of the way when not in use. The negative side is that the stand itself needs some extra room, and there's not much storage capacity in it, apart from the holes for hanging up the tools. I cannot decide. From your experience, are there any other considerations that could justify the use of a stand, or make it unnecessary? Best regards, Attila
@movingchips
@movingchips Жыл бұрын
Great question, but you have to understand my response comes without the knowledge of having a stand. I too would love the stand, but it is pricey and my garage floor is uneven. I adjusted the legs of the table and don't have to worry about being level. I would want to ensure my apartment floor was very level when wheeling the lathe around. The stand is a smaller foot print and a table will require a bigger foot print for the same stability. That being said, when I do outboard turning, it is not the easiest to manage on the table. I believe if I had the stand on wheels, I could swing the lathe into a more comfortable position (assuming I found a stable location on my uneven floor). Those are my thoughts, hope this helps. Thanks
@attilakovacs5803
@attilakovacs5803 Жыл бұрын
@@movingchips Thank you for the quick response! Your views have helped a lot. Outboard turning is an important aspect I didn't consider. Actually, it is one of the main selling point of this lathe, so it would be unwise to make it uncomfortable. Manoeuvreability is very important too, and it's a great plus that with the stand I could move the lathe out of the way easily. It would be difficult to move the lathe on a bench. I have made up my mind and I'll go for the stand. It's very expensive, but luckily, I can just manage, even if I do overstretch myself a little. In any case, investing in a good tool is a good idea in these times, when money is losing its value day by day. I cannot order Laguna's own bench lighting unfortunately (the flat one with the LED tube), because that would be really too expensive. I've found a type of folding bench lamp at IKEA, a couple of those fitted with normal LED bulbs will definitely keep me going for some time. Thanks again for your valuable thoughts and happy turning!👍🌳🌲
