Great to see Walter defend Shatner's performance, he's spot on. Shatners funeral scene in Wrath of Kahn gets me in the feels every time - You believe Kirk has lost his best friend & you can feel his grief. That was an awesome performance.

We had Carlos Baena come to STaC last week (Sedtion 31 and Unification director) and now we get the DP as well!! WE ARE DISTINGUISHED!! Ryan, Malissa, Jenny and Matt kept the flow rolling and we even got some Star Trek talk in there along with the LOTR, Friends and what not. You just never know what The Main Viewer is gonna show us. On twtiter/x, someone asked Shatner if it was straight AI. He replied "No. That’s me in the beginning and @SamWitwer as young Kirk with a little AI thrown in." IMDB and the film's own credits list Shatner as playing 'Kirk' along with Sam yet Tarpley said in his 'My Experience' video that Sam played "all the versions of Captain Kirk you see in this are Sam Witwer"... Kind of confusing.

I think this was great but Shatner walks different than this guy did. Most people walk heel to toe. Shatner walks toe to heel. In the original Star Trek I noticed how he always walked different. I also think it would have been an added touch if we could have seen Spock and Kirk standing together walking toward the sun. But I am just being picky. It was great and I am so glad they made this film!

I don't wish to be too fractious , but we do know how the current versions of Trek through Secret Hideout has very much polarized the fans. With that in mind, I do think that there is some communication here - beyond what we know happened in real life with the participation of Bill Shatner, Susan Nimoy and everyone "OT" Trek. A lot of us view current Trek as like V'Ger - lots of fantastic technology, immense amounts of knowledge and skill... but no heart. Lacking the spark of "human" that made Trek so special. So, what did they recreate here... that moment from TMP between Kirk and Spock. Clasping hands just like that - "This simple feeling is beyond V'ger's comprehension. No meaning. No Hope. Jim, no answers. V'Ger has knowledge that spans this universe. And yet V'Ger is empty, cold. It's asking questions. Is this all that I am? Is there nothing more?" Modern Trek has that impression much of the time. The simple feeling is just gone. No meaning, no hope, no answers. A vast pool of technology to draw on. Skilled actors, filmmakers. It is all there, but the spark of human is missing. That modern Trek is asking itself - is this technology all that I am? Is there nothing more? These creatives are saying YES, there is so much more. You can embrace the technology, you can embrace the old stories right along with the new. You can embrace it all... and the fans and new people will be right there. IF - if they will but write it. Write the simple feeling, the meaning, the hope. They did it in a 10 minute short about the end of life - but embracing all the technology, all the universes of Trek new and old and the spark of human is there without ever saying a word. All the fractured fandom is right there and will embrace the new if they will but write it with the feeling, with the human that made Trek so incredible. Will they? Who knows. But it can be done.

That's a problem with current de-aging tech. You may able to strip away layers of wrinkles and even weight, but it does nothing for the person's posture and movement. He would still walk like a 93 year old man. Recent example, just look at Robert De Niro in the Irishman. As for Data, they didn't even bother with de-aging. They slap on a bad wig and ill fitting uniform and called it a day. They did de-aged Q for a few seconds though.

I thought in Picard Season 1 they did de-age Data, or at least the make-up used very convincingly concealed Brent's older age. Funny thing in Picard Season 3 they de-age Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes for a flashback, but Patrick's voice conspicuously still sounds his more fragile elderly 2014-onward voice instead of that somewhat younger more powerful tone he carried within 1987-2013.

She may wants something that looks more typically Trek-like. She may have deduced that Kurtzman Trek isn't a huge success with a lot of fans a whole and this is HER legacy in her professional we are talking about here. The power she has on set, i.e. a Producer's gig might help. She might not want to be tied to ridiculously long hours at this stage in her life and might also want more of an ensemble to carry more of the weight. Strange that the creative leaders would not lean into something more conventional after that ending, but nevermind. Can we at least have some spin-off novels now they don't have to worry about contradicting a show that's clearly not going to happen?
