I was 17 and lucky enough to see Van Halen on their 1978 tour. Their first helmet had just come out and I'd been playing it nonstop since I bought it. Fast forward a few years and I was visiting my cousin in California and he had tickets to the US Festival for the day Van Halen headlined. Those were the only times I caught the original band live. I met David at the Whiskey a go go in West Hollywood in 1987. My band was playing the 2nd slot (pay to play) with an unknown headliner “Airplane” in the 3rd slot. Upstairs above the stage we were all changing out of our street clothes (right in front of wide open windows lol) guy comes up the stairs, ball cap, with a ton of blonde hair under cap, sunglasses on. As soon as he opened his mouth I knew who it was, DLR. He said “ Hey dude do have a cigarette”? I had nothing on, except a smile. I replied “sorry man, I don’t smoke”.He then asked for a match. I told him I didn’t have that either! He looked disappointed, turned around and walked back down the stairs. My keyboard player Ryan was dating a server from Chuck Landis Country Club in Reseda, her name was Christy Skadowski. She was stunning. She got kicked out of her room at the Sunset Doheny motor lodge. She moved in with us. Some guy used to call for Christy every night. She told me that she was dating David. It was Christmas time 1986, he used to call her every night at our apartment and once in a while, send her a taxi. I remember one night she went to his place to wrap Christmas presents. Fast forward 30 years, Seattle WA, I was playing Drums with a Jazz trio. I met a guy who ran lights for Van Halen in the mid 1980’s. He was telling me how hot David’s GF was. I asked him if he remembered her name? He said”I think it was “Christy”? I said, “yep”, Christy Skadowski”. He couldn’t believe how small the world is!
