Can't leave the class A chimney exposed in the closet. Must wall it off. Otherwise, clothes, boxes, etc. will end up against it. Take carpet out of the area to be enclosed. Put service door into area and smoke detector in closed off area, making sure you can access the smoke detector for battery change.

Great observation! With this project, the homeowner was going to provide the enclosure around the Class A venting, in that storage area, to maintain the required 2" clearance.

I have a question. Usually hydro bill is $85 a month or less . My roommate has one of these units in her bedroom .she's been using it a lot the last month and even left the heat on at about 72 f She left it running non stop for over 25 hours while at work and probably uses the unit to heat her room often Our apartment is heated by gas . These units were installed mostly for AC. As we are on 3rd floor of a house Our hydro bill is separate from other units in house Our hydro bill was $233. For one month . Which normally would be $85. How much electricity cost wise does this unit use in a month ? With gas heating the average temp in apartment is about 68f and a bit colder overnight .as we live in Toronto and Last winter our hydro bills were between $70 to $85 a month and our gas bills were about $175 a month in winter I rarely cook and use the dryer once or twice a month Thanks ...btw these units are fantastic for cooling in summer

Absolutely avoid buying this insert if you want to heat anything larger than a small room. The air intake is undersized and will not feed enough air to burn anything with a tight grain such as red oak, white oak or cherry. You will be forced to leave the door cracked open for any kind of hardwood burn.
@TrueGorge3 жыл бұрын
Sorry you had such issues with your unit. The client that we installed this for is pretty happy it. Oak and fir are the common firewood in this region. Have you spoken with your Jotul dealer about your unit?
@sevenexes77783 жыл бұрын
@@TrueGorge thank you for your question. I did speak to the Jotul dealer that sold and installed the Kennebec. Their suggestion was to mix more, less dense grained wood in with my hardwood selection. I had already been doing this by adding well seasoned, smaller pieces of split red maple and some cedar. Unfortunately the small air intake design located directly in the center concentrates the burn to the lower middle of the stove. This would be a much better product if it directed more air over a wider area. This would give you the option of dampering down for control instead having to open the door to let enough air in to encourage the burn.
@quietpro Жыл бұрын
I'm fairly inexperienced with wood stoves but the feedback here matches my experience. I don't know the types of wood I'm burning (whatever is native to MD) but have had similar struggles with getting enough air to the fire without resorting to venting through the door. As I've improved, I usually only need to do this while initially starting the fire but, nonetheless, still need to do it. It's a delicate balance between letting air in while keeping the smoke in as well.

Jotul follows in the footsteps of a true American stove company who also makes stoves from cast iron: Vermont Castings, Randolph, Vermont. Are the Jotuls as good, or better than the VC stoves? Depends on who you talk to. I've yet to find a VC owner who switched to Jotul or a Jotul owner who's owned a VC stove. Even then, it'd only be one person's opinion. At least the VC stoves are made in America. But kudos to Jotul for making their stoves of cast iron, like all stoves should be - at least, in part.
@TrueGorge3 жыл бұрын
We offered Vermont Castings for a few years. What we learned was that they were a great stove when they first started, then the company sold multiple times and quality control dropped sharply. We had nothing but trouble getting parts for them. For that reason, we believe the Jotul stoves are way better because the company has been consistent for decades and homeowners can be confident that they can get parts for their stove. Thanks!
@mic9823 жыл бұрын
@@TrueGorge I recently looked at both the Jotul (Oslo 500) and the VC Defiant as a replacement for our long-standing Earth stove. It was a hard choice, but we picked the American-made stove. However, you are very correct, even the stove dealer (who sells both) told us of past difficulties with Vermont Castings (after having been bought and sold numerous times). It was his opinion that most of the problems you mentioned have been laid to rest with the new company now owning VC. Still, I may regret our decision if problems persist. the Jotul line is an impressive one, for sure. It was the 'American-made ' that drove our decision mostly. Thanks.
@mic9822 жыл бұрын
@@scott5799 Partly. As the dealership nearby told us, the Jotuls are cast in Europe (Norway) and then shipped to the assembly plant in Maine. So, yeah, partly American-Made. What swayed me to the VC Defiant was the top load and the bottom ash clean-out. Now that we've had the stove for over 8 months and are burning it now 24/7 since late September, we are very happy with it. The single exception being perhaps it's too much stove. The smaller Encore would probably have been enough stove for us at 1250 Sq.Ft home. Oh, well.

Hello - i'm having a gas line put in to an old fireplace opening for a new valor portrait FP. Here it looks like the hook up is in front. What's the best place in the fireplace floor to have the connection run to? Towards the back on the side? Or front on the side?
@TrueGorge3 жыл бұрын
Oh fun! If you’re coming up through the floor of the fireplace, I would say coming up in the back left side would probably be safest. An appliance connector would be used to connect the gas line to the Valor unit and is more flexible than the gas supply itself. Good luck!

Have you tried the “top down” burn method? Have you also confirmed you have enough chimney height? Those could solve the problem. It may not be the stove.

@@TrueGorge we have the manual and have tried everything in it and the home inspection guy says the chimney is fine. It's about 16'. It works fine on 40 to 50°. Trying things only to have a house full of smoke isn't something we care to keep doing. I've rigged wood stoves on construction sites for temporary heat. Have cooked dinners on old cooking wood stoves. I'm confident that a less "technical" stove would be fine. But wife says sell stove and our ten cords and go has with blower insert.

Hi Colleen, I believe the final height had to do with seeing the fire from the front door when you entered, family room and dining room when your were sitting. I always recommend doing some mockup with cardboard or blue painters tape and then sitting back to evaluate it. Hope that helps!

Back in the mid-'70s, I had a Store "The Stove Craft Shop" in Western WV and was the farthest south and West Dealer in the US for Jotul Stoves at that time. They were by far the best quality and most efficient wood stoves on the market, everybody else copied their baffle plate construction to increase their efficiency, there were many Jotul copy cats that emerged around that time. Unfortunately, the importer "Kristia Assoc." in Portland Maine priced the stoves more for their Northeastern "elitist" market and my market in a more central and rural US couldn't afford the stoves and the dealer price was only about 25% less than the advertised retail making them very difficult to sell. Still, they were Great stoves if you could afford one, I still heat my house here in central FL with my original Jotul combifire #4 some 45 years later! In fact, there is a fire in it right now with my cat sitting in front of it. I also have a Jotul Lumberjack #380 unfired and unused as a display in my living room, a beautiful cookstove that the Importer didn't bring to the US for many years because they thought the nude woman sculpted in the side panels would offend our Puritan American sensibilities! After much clamor from the dealers, they brought a few in for us but, again the price was too high for most, thus my collector's item. Good luck to you, you seem to be in an area that can more afford these wonderful Gems!

Jotul600 vs jotul f50 tl(usa) ? Your opinion please
@TrueGorge5 жыл бұрын
michel waknin The 50 TL runs a little cleaner, heats the same sqf, is 100 ibs heavier, fits a longer log, and runs a couple hundred dollars less that the F600, and has a neat top loading feature. The F600 is 100% cast iron, has double door and a neat side loading door. I do know that F600 is going to be discontinued by the end of the year. So if that’s the unit you decide on, what for the sales. 😀

michel waknin I would ask your friend what broke. Cast iron is very durable. Just like your engine block on your car, cast iron does great under the constant expansion/contraction stress. Plus, you will have a warranty period where items would be replaced by the dealer you purchase it from.

What's the product you used to adhere the cultured stone to the hardy board?
@thefireplacewhisperer72115 жыл бұрын
Afton Eftink I used a Type S Mortar. Have a spray bottle handy so you can lightly wet the hardieboard surface right before you adhere the stone. This helps prevent the hardieboard from pulling moisture out of the mortar prior to it setting up. Good luck!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the product he's using at 1:32 to adhere the stone to the hardieboard appears to be some sort of adhesive. @TrueGorge6 жыл бұрын
I'd be checking your minimum vent system height. Jotul would like a minimum of 15' of vent height. You may have to go higher than that if you have offsets. A big factor in low heat output can be the high moisture content in your firewood. You can get moisture meters to verify if that's the case. Large vaulted ceilings can also gobble up a lot of your heat. Ceiling fans can assist in pushing the heat back down. If no ceiling fan, I would recommend getting the Jotul fan for it if you didn't already. Good luck!
