It's probably a quill, from a goose or a similar-sized bird. I've read that those were used when playing a Medieval lute.

I mean it WASN'T all bad. Sure, there were a lot of problems, but it's not like these problems suddenly disappeared when the Reneissance began. And there's a big difference between different centuries of the Middle Ages. The current classic music owes a lot to the Middle Ages.

9. Count the pegs. All the lower strings are paired (the pairs are called courses) and the top string is a singleton. The top string is often referred to as the chanterelle.
