My dog isn't terribly food motivated. What kind of treat should I give her?
@staciamj12 ай бұрын
Food is the way the dog gets paid, just like humans want to get paid for the work they do.

The comparisons make it so much easier to understand what your dog's going through. It's a new way to think about it.

Thank you for this channel! I have spent (wasted) SO many hours searching, scanning & watching reactive dog videos for years! Yours is the first channel that addresses what I call the 'full tilt' reactivity my dog suffers with, AND outlines simple, actionable processes to help me and my dog. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the step-by-step guidance after 5 years of overwhelm. Thank you! 🐕

@RedPointyDogTraining Thank you! I haven't gotten through all the videos yet, so you may have covered it. My pooch is going through a very rough time. We have new dog neighbors on both sides, so my Maizey's being almost constantly hypervigilant. Everything - from a car door a block away to birds flying over while she trying 'to do her business' is setting her off. Even scents coming in the windows can raise her hackles and get her barking. I would love some tips on how to calm her when she feels triggered by almost anything, and even distracting/playing/training seems to add to the stimulation. Bonus love if you could provide just one suggestion here. I'm truly worried about the upcoming 4th of July fireworks.

Would be a good idea to use a basket, muzzle and a leash with reactive dog at home when introducing a new dog
@RedPointyDogTraining4 ай бұрын
Oh absolutely! Best to do that introduction off property in a neutral space though.
@isvega134 ай бұрын
Thank you. We did initially. Then kept them separated by a baby gate. We have had them in the same room and did fine as long as they didn’t get 2 close. That’s why I’m thinking muzzle on reactive dog and leashes on both as to not restrict movement.

I don't know if Willow is good off leash so far because she's only off leash in our fenced yard or house.. She reacts from within our yard when she sees a dog outside the fence and when on leash. She is happily interested in one of our neighbor dogs that she sees just about every day from within our fence. I take that as a very good sign! Her body language and bark are very friendly (her bark goes up an octave or so at least when she's happy barking! and it goes down very low when she is not happy.).

@RedPointyDogTraining8 ай бұрын
I'll paste it for you here! They are hard to find on a KZbin Short! "It's okay to feel frustrated by your dog. It's okay that their behavior makes you anxious. It doesn't have to be this way though. Let me tell you a secret. Predictability is the best counterweight to anxiety. Meaning that when we can predict what's going to happen (and how we should respond) we gain a sense of control and that my friends, squashes anxiety."

oh, and as the commentor KE-yo2gd mentioned, blocking the view does not help. My dog recognizes the sounds coming from what used to trigger the barking visually. There were three other Tahoe cars like my huband's on our one street, and all white but our dog recognized my husband's car coming without seeing it - we're guessing by the sound of the tires????
@RedPointyDogTraining8 ай бұрын
That's super interesting! If you pup struggles with OCD then I'd look at this behavior with a wider lense. Maybe they truly are seeing "taking care of the trash can" as their job. How can you satisfy your dogs need to work and occupy their brain I'm other more productive ways? Have you heard of Simone Muellers Predation Substitution Training?
@nopigeon8 ай бұрын
We have a GSP with serious OCD! When my neighbor waaay across the street pulls his garbage can out to the street the night before trash pickup my German Short Hair Pointer will bark at the can all night long until the trash people empty it and the neighbor returns it to its storing location in the tree area on his property. My dog will then sigh and stop barking, knowing she has done her 'job'.
@Ke-yo2gd8 ай бұрын
My dog barks at people and other dogs walking by on the side walk regardless of visual access. We have blinds or covering on all windows facing the street. So she is not responding to visual but to sound. How do I use the conditioning process you describe to address this?
@RedPointyDogTraining8 ай бұрын
Yes you bring up an excellent point! Management (using window cling or closing your blinds) is by no means a perfect system. Especially if the dog has a history practicing this behavior. If they are also responding to sound you could try keeping a fan or noise machine in the area during more busy times of day when more people walk by the home. I'd also still recommend working on the training games I mentioned as they will still help in reducing the behavior.

We have been leaving the trails for sits and treats for a while now whenever we see other dogs coming. At this point, when Pemi sees a dog coming she looks to me for treats and helps me find a spot to wait until the other dog passes. It's so easy now, and she's almost always relaxed because I keep her safe. Thank you.❤ ❤

Awe! I love that! And I love that with that Pemi finds ease in that predictable pattern.

I can see these tips working well for Willow and her initial fear of strangers coming into the house. She adjusts pretty well over time but at first is very afraid. Some try to come right to her and that makes it worse. I'm going to keep distance and intensity in mind! Thanks Louise!
@RedPointyDogTraining10 ай бұрын
Yes absolutely! You could even give her a lick mat at a distance from the front door, and have the guest sit down while she warms up on her own time.

awesome Louise! thank you! how do I know why my dog is reacting? body language? willow is lunging/growling at dogs that walk past us when on leash. we don't yet know if she does this when not on leash but I did see her do that once while in our fenced yard when my neighbor walked down their driveway with 2 dogs on leash. she has not done it when just the dogs are out loose in their yard. thank you! i think i need to bring back 1-2-3 for her now too. little jars of chicken or turkey baby food make a great high value treat! easy to carry and they seal up. so a few licks, seal it up. a few more licks, seal it up.
