PACE should be closed. Instead of changing people's lives, PACE is normalizing and enabling destructive, unproductive behavior.

How ironic. The original hull is authentic yet will be scrapped. The bridge and upper works are replicas of the original tug yet will be "saved?" How ironic. Even Jonathan Swift or Stephen Leacock would be hard pressed to come up with anything more inane.

Kids do NOT need 'help' from Trans activists to figure out who they are!! Let them be kids and experience CHILDHOOD and they will understand in due time what they need to understand. Parents are concerned about the drugging and sexual butchery of young people in the name of 'gender affirmation' .Disgusting that the city official is siding with the perpetrators.

Morons. Close the mill means turning dryden into a ghost town. Then they'll whine about having to go to kenora or thunderbay for groceries which are paid for by community welfare from the public trough to prop them up. The cycle of insanity never ends with these whiners.

that old saying about a job "putting food on the table" seems a bit outdated... these days it would be more like, "it pays the monthly housing subscription with the dining-room-table service fee added on, but there's nothing to show for it after a generation so why even bother anymore".

I have nothing against addicts pursuing recovery. Actually, it is the only means by which addicts can achieve a somewhat normal stable life. The parks of Thunder Bay are full of addicts that have not and will not seek treatment. However, where in this celebration of recovery is there an honest discussion about the incredible harm that addicts cause to other people? Besides being addicts, addicts are often unpleasant people. Addicts are often bitter, quick to anger, shallow, selfish, self-absorbed, incapable of feeling empathy, and narcissistic. Their primary consideration is either getting their next fix or maintaining their sobriety. This results in addicts being bad parents, friends, colleagues, and community members. Addicts think nothing of lying, stealing, betraying people, standing people up, and brushing off responsibilities and obligations, such as employment and child-rearing. On top of this, there are criminal offenses, including drunk driving, child neglect, assault, sexual assault, murder, etc. When do addicts deal with this reality?

What are you expect when the manufacturers who make these trucks have supply chain restraints that are costly and then on top of that there’s Union involved in some of these manufacturers on top of that these manufacturers know that the money is coming from tax dollars and the government just prints money now of course they’re going to increase their prices. When do you expect?

I served as a firefighter/EMT for 48+ years. My last assignment for 12 years was writing bid specifications and purchasing fire apparatus and ambulances. What goes into a bid specification is quite extensive and time consuming. Here in the USA, it’s gotten to the point that every truck must have certain equipment, pumps, engines, cab size for multiple firefighters, etc. truthfully, there isn’t any real reason for all of this. They want to have a big cab, air conditioning, comfortable ride and such that isn’t necessary. I know many firefighters will disagree about the A/C, but by the time the cab is cooled down, you’re at the scene. When you look at the European models, they do the exact same thing as USA apparatus but are more compact, and the reliability is better because the trucks aren’t used like in the USA. of the departments I served 25 years on, would dispatch an aerial ladder truck that ( at that time) costs $650,000 to a medical call where they would provide minimum care until an ambulance arrived. The truck would be started cold, be driven hard and fast for maybe 5 minutes, then sit at idle for maybe 10-20 minutes and then return to station. Once our department decided to be dispatched on most medical calls we noticed a rise in maintenance costs, especially brakes, transmissions, tires, and diesel engine wear. Almost all medical calls send either an engine or aerial ladder along with an ambulance. That is hostile to these custom built, heavy, big engine and large fire apparatus. Diesel engines are meant to be run continuously, not stopped and started constantly. That causes the wear and tear. Plus, there’s the desire of firefighters to have the latest and best apparatus as compared to other fire services in the area. The idea of larger pumps of 2000gpm also adds to the size, weight and cost of fire apparatus. You need a bigger engine and transmission, PTO systems to operate that pump. The problem is, not many jurisdictions can get 2000 gallons of water per minute into the pump for it to put out 2000 gallons of water. I’ve had arguments with chief officers who want a big pump when they don’t realize what goes into providing one. A huge percentage of the time at actual fires, you’re not pumping over a few hundred gallons per minute. That waste of funds used to buy that big engine and pump is foolish. In my area, they’re now buying aerial trucks with pumps, hose and water tanks, which can be useful. But generally aren’t. Not enough research goes into deciding exactly what that agency needs for its area that it’s protecting. I’ve been in the meetings where we get feedback from the firefighters what they would want in either an engine, aerial, or rescue truck. It’s amazing what we get back that’s un realistic. In my career, both civilian and military, I’ve attended maybe 15-20 fires requiring huge amounts of water. But you have to consider the water source, water mains, and hydrant size and locations to be able to pump that much water. Unless there’s very large water mains, and the city has a magnificent water source and supply system, you’re not going to get the water needed to extinguish the fire. You can try to surround and drown it, but you’re not saving anything. Most residential house fires are extinguished with one or two hose lines, maybe 500-1000 gallons of water, and due to fire, heat, smoke and water damage the home is a total loss. And the department spent thousands more for that 2000gpm pump and extra large fire truck to fight that fire. Departments want custom made apparatus. But you can get a reliable truck on a commercial chassis, with the same equipment, engine, pump and water tank, plus all the additional tools and equipment hose load and save thousands of taxpayer money. If the fire department purchasing such equipment would take a long hard look at what is really necessary and needed for their area of protecting, and write really good bid specifications, taking into consideration how much it’s going to cost, rather than wanting the biggest, prettiest and best, a lot of money could be saved. Fire apparatus sits in the station a lot more than it’s out making calls. It’s good to have when it’s needed, but spending tax dollars just to be able to out do other departments is foolishness. Some of these departments where I live and was a member of are going overboard with extra lights, bells ( yes, fire truck bells) special paint and lettering, that adds nothing to the ability of the apparatus to do what it was bought for. Saving lives and property. Those unfortunate people who’s home or property is on fire, or they need medical help don’t care how nice the truck looks, or if it has a bell and lots of pretty flashing lights, or a 2000 gallon a minute pump, they just want help. And if a fire chief and his fellow officers take into consideration what their department really needs, and focus on reliability and cost savings, then city councils, mayors, administrators would look more favorably on them.
