I’m happy to see a good video on this. I just bought the exact same mower a few days ago. It came with a nice leaf vacuum trailer I believe the same year as mower. Trailer needs some repair of holes in the canvas top and maybe new 6” tubes. Mower runs good and all the belts are in good shape as is the deck. Only issue I have is that it’s a little difficult to change gears even though the brake/clutch seems tight enough. When I seen you mowing and switching from forward to reverse easily I realized mine is not normal. Any advise? I will be referring to this video in the future as I do maintenance. Thanks for sharing!

@willyck948Ай бұрын
hard to say as traditional small engine service shops will not work on older engines. You'd have to call around to a machine shop that can rebuild it. They'd only want the block and probably won't be able to get an estimate together before Dissassembly, some parts may be hard to find if not available from dealer.

i have the old 10hp briggs the one piece carb type with the "box" muffler at the front, and it got some holes so i removed it and i noticed i have a thread in the exhaust hole or port? in the engine, should i fix the old one or i can put these ones on they are much cheaper too
@willyck948Ай бұрын
muffler requirements very on application and there's a lot of briggs engines with bolt slots and threaded ports for either thread in mufflers or bolt on mufflers. If bolt slots are good I'd stick with a bolt on muffler preferably oem as a lot of aftermarket thread in mufflers don't last or develop rattle from loose baffle inside.

Thanks a lot for this. My rack on my 98 Riviera has a bolt that came loose or was left loose by the previous owner and a shop tightened it up for me and gave me an alignment. 2k miles later I wanna check and see if everything is still tight and I believe this gives me a lot better idea of what bolts I need to check and where they are, than I had going in blind. Could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure this setup will be nearly identical to my 98 Riviera.

Thanks. Will look out for that. Struggeling for spark on the same type of engine, but with external (car) coil. Any tips for gapping the points on these? Can you confirm gap? I belive i've done it correctly, but not sure. The points are open for most of the engine cycle, but then closes at one point. It must be correct because it started and ran beautifully for 10 seconds once when I just got it. Lost spark and then replaced everything (coil, spark plug, plug wire, points and condensor). Its driving me mad. Coil has 12V +.
@willyck9482 ай бұрын
You can hook a condensor to the negative side of the coil then tap a grounded wire to the same coil negative post to trigger spark to verify if coil and condensor are good then trouble shoot the points separately.

its a small 3 screw flow jet carb. Usually the high speed screw on the bottom is 1.5-2.5 turns out and the low speed between the bowl and air filter is .75-2 turns out. You adjust the high speed while engine is running full speed 3600 rpms then adjust the low speed at idle. Zippo varga channel has good video on that style carb.

They're hall afect sensors and soldered not crimpted. Not sure what resistance would hurt or how much resistance would be present with multiple soldered connections. Also connectors and wiring isn't cheap especially for a 92 buick. I did plan on looking for a good used harness but need the car asap.

Because new gt would cost $5000+. Most people buy disposable mowers not necessarily knowing they won't last as long as gt. I believe husqvarna still make a gt with fabricated deck and heavy duty tuff torque trans that accepts ayp implements.

Nice engines! I've always thought the gear drive generator/ distributor is a cool accessory. I have a TH with that setup as well. The generator can only be used on certain models because there's a bump out on the side of the crank case that had to be notched for the generator to fit. They also tapped a 1/2" pipe into the side so a longer oil filler neck could be used. Fun stuff!
@willyck9487 ай бұрын
I may have modified a tjd to accept the generator and used jb weld🤐 It works but not something I'd recommend as there's not much to the casting. Almost thought about bypassing the oil gallery all together and adding external pump and filter but the engine is common enough I'll leave it alone. My daughter brought me the starter from her 18.5hp mower, with the 16 tooth plastic gear, and worn teeth. According to the manual, it should take the 14 tooth metal gear. She sent me pictures of the flywheel, and it definitely looks like cast iron. The starter had a number on it, which matches the plastic gear. She has had the mower for a couple of years, and bought it used. I'm beginning to think someone put the wrong starter on it.

All lawn mower engines suffer from overheating due to the cooking fins becoming obstructed with debris. With a simple shroud removal and a good blast of compressed air these engines live a very long time. Heat and lack of maintenance will kill any engine.
@johnwyman612610 ай бұрын
Regular steel bolts have carbon in them. Resistors are made of carbon in order to heat up when electricity goes through them, reducing the current. You do not want carbon between hi current conductors. I would highly suggest using stainless steel bolts because they don't have carbon in them.
@willyck94810 ай бұрын
A stainless bolt would be better, but I didn't have one on hand. The current trew the bolt is negligible as there are 2 copper grommets against the lead battery terminal.
@johnwyman612610 ай бұрын
@willyck948 I have seen for myself where expensive parts get all burnt up and melted due to not using stainless steel fasteners. Some even came from the manufacturer that should have known better. You can typically find them at Ace hardware or other hardware stores for less than a dollar a piece. This is just my recommendation, you do you.
@willyck94810 ай бұрын
@johnwyman6126 I did install a battery with both terminal types so I can buy a top to side post adaper if needed. The extra top posts also make jumper cable hook up easier. I've probably jumped started half a dozen cars already.

You need to verify if it's fuel or spark related. You can verify spark bay spraying little starting fluid into the intake. If it fires temporarily, then shuts off, you have a fuel issue. If it still doesn't start, you probably have a spark issue. I can't help much more than that without seeing it. If it is a spark related issue, you should look into a distributor ignition module.
