Thank you very much for uploading this video with all the pictures of Tarawa. I lived in Beiriki 5 years of my childhood and unfortunately I have almost no photos from that time left. I wore the same green uniform as the girls in 3:05. I still can remember the time very well, it is a very special place. I thank God that I was able to grow up not only in such a beatiful place but also very protected. It is a different way of living there, than it is in the West. I remember everyone to be very caring and loving, in a diferent way than here. I cannot explain it, it was like a diferent world. - Of course everything has it's shadow sides. And I have to say that - at least in the 90s - all the military "leftovers" across the island were very present (at least to me as a child), and scared me each time we drove by, because I had heared in great detail about some things of this time in school and from some elderly people in the village. Fun fact: The word for "dog" in Kiribati is pronounced "come here" - because when english speaking men first visited the Island with their dogs, they always told them to "come here"... :) I don't know how it is written in Kiribati though.

This is the Kosovo of the Albanians who were violated over the centuries, but it was not overthrown and disproportionately by the Seb who, with the help of the churches, created myths while trying to create an autochthonous Albanian people.

Jeste

The 8 inch guns sited on Tarawa Atoll were not 'Singapore Guns', this is a common misconception. The 'Singapore Guns' were BL Mk1 15 inch guns of a similar type to those mounted on battleships of the Royal Navy. All of these guns were still emplaced when Singapore was liberated and only removed after the war. None of them were ever relocated to Tarawa. The guns on Tarawa were British guns manufactured by Vickers and their serial numbers show that these were sold to Japan around the time of the Russo-Japanese War.

I lived on Betio for three years in the mid 1990's, always finding something from the war in my yard. I lived not far from the two eight inch guns at Temakin Point. Just read the book by John Wukovits "One Square Mile of Hell" and have a copy of Derrick Wright's book "Tarawa, a hell of a way to die". I haven't been back to Kiribati since 2000, enjoyed my time there. Great video, thank you.

The Marines mentioned at the beginning of this video. Left from New Zealand. Where the Marine Corps had established a Base, just north of Wellington. This was all part of the Allied WW2 operational agreements, in this case obviously with NZ. In order to support operations in the South Pacific. So they also did a lot of their amphibious assault training in NZ. They deployed from this Base to Guadalcanal. After fighting there. They returned to NZ for rest and recreation. And - to resupply and rebuild their numbers. Then they deployed from NZ to Tarawa. There is a NZ Memorial to the Marines on Tarawa. It is because of their NZ connection. Also the Marines themselves in WW2. Built a Memorial to the 17 NZ Coast watchers and radio coms servicemen, plus 5 other civilians who were executed (beheaded) by the Japanese on Tarawa.

No they didn't. The Marines who fought at Tarawa all came from Training Camps located in New Zealand where they had rested and regrouped after fighting at Guadalcanal. Please don't spread false information about history when it takes such a minimal effort to check facts, those who gave their lives for freedom deserve to have their story told accurately by those of us that they died for in the very least.
