It's been a long adventure with classical music for me, and this was one that hit me very early on, the melody of the first movement as an infant practically somehow, and then really in greater depth in my mid teens. Now I am 32, and this remains one of the most poetic and sublime creations in all of classical music, even after generously sampling the depths of Bach, Mahler, Sibelius, Shostakovich, Brahms, Wagner, etc, this piece with it's well known melodies still stands up with it's inner poetry and has a raw emotional power that is almost wholly life affirming and simply as is. Incredibly revolutionary structure and style of phrasing and orchestration, but even without comparative historical context, we have a certain level of enduring perfection and sublimity. Even though there are problems with the youtube format(ads, the temptation to click and scroll if one isn't comitted), I love watching videos like this from this golden age of filming and performance with the likes of Bernstein and others.

Sir Richard Rodney Bennet was a prolific composer of far more than film music. He said this was his favorite film score.

Cómo describir lo que sucede en este video? El éxtasis de estos acordes es de lo más sublime alguna vez escrito para una orquesta y en la música en general. Bernstein, un genio. La música de Wagner sin parangón. Sin buscar palabrerías, trascendente.

The symphony is dedicated to Sibelius whom Vaughn Williams admired. I think he had been smitten by the Finn's final symphonies.
