Did you need the teacher edition bk
@upstream_homeschooling
@upstream_homeschooling 9 күн бұрын
It depends how you plan to teach the subject. I do not believe the teacher's edition is necessary because we just read the designated pages and then fill out the worksheet. If you wanted to get into all the exercises that a BJU Video lesson would do (or you're in a classroom setting) then maybe teachers edition is the way to go. We just never did our reading that way. Hope that helps you in your decision!😄

How did IEW work with your 3rd grader? I’m on the fence if I should start it with my son next year or wait until he’s in 4th.
@upstream_homeschooling
@upstream_homeschooling Жыл бұрын
I should do an updated video, but good question! It went well for a couple weeks and then became too much for him. I ended up not doing any writing for him in 3rd grade, and in 4th grade he is finishing up the IEW "People and Places in our Community". He ended up liking that much much better and now in 5th grade we will start him with the videos again. I'm sure I could have done PPC in 3rd grade with him, but taking an extra year off writing was helpful in our case since we were building and life was busy. Hope my overly long answer helped you. Ha!

Thanks for the flip through! Very helpful as we fine tune the details for next year (refocusing our goals, making a few changes). The samples given on the website are mildly helpful but only give a tiny glimpse into what’s there. For those wondering what level would be best for them I highly recommend calling IEW directly - the lady I spoke with was incredibly helpful and after speaking with her I cleared my cart and started over as my mindset was completely opposite what she recommended doing. She spent 30 minutes with me asking specifics about each child (I have four ranging from 9 to 15) and explaining in detail the differences between the programs and levels.

@upstream_homeschooling

That is a good question. It really depends on your student's writing ability. Maybe try putting them in one class at first and see if you need to challenge the 6th grader more or if it's good? I feel like it's easy in the beginning but quickly ramps up so it might actually work? Let me know what you ended up doing! Good luck!

When did reading comprehension click with him? Was it videos from bju? If so I need details.. my 4th grader struggles
@upstream_homeschooling
@upstream_homeschooling 2 жыл бұрын
I would say it clicked at the end of 2nd grade for my youngest (and even then I wouldn't call it strong reading). My older one took longer (maybe end of 3rd? Hard to remember now). I do think the videos help, along with daily read alouds (both reading to them, and having them read to me). I am more of the mindset that as kids learn to read they should enjoy it, so I never forced them to read too much and mostly just read a lot of books to them and eventually they read on their own. But also, see if you could rule out dyslexia for your 4th grader. Overall, they will eventually pick it up and I would try to make it as enjoyable as possible

I did not get the one with the parent course videos. If your child will be using the videos and you are not planning to teach them, the student videos do a wonderful job explaining what is expected. I have had experience with IEW through local moms and co-ops, so that was also a reason why I didn't feel like I needed the parent course.

Does the child need to be a competent/independent speller to be able to use this program (level A)?
@upstream_homeschooling
@upstream_homeschooling 2 жыл бұрын
Since this program isn't focused on spelling, I would say that the child should feel comfortable writing on their own, at least the outlines. As far as good spelling, that can be corrected during the rough draft and proof reading process before they turn in their final papers.

What reading level would you say this is?
@upstream_homeschooling
@upstream_homeschooling 2 жыл бұрын
This is geared towards grades K-6th. The actual textbook I would say is more for reading level 4-6th grade though we did it as a read aloud and then they both did their own note booking journals. I found it useful to read to them and then open up time for discussions instead of having them read on their own. Of course, depending on the child it could work really well as independant reading. Sorry for taking so long to respond, I hope this is helpful.

@upstream_homeschooling
@upstream_homeschooling 2 жыл бұрын
I am so sorry for not getting back to you right away. It's funny you ask about the schedule, because this year was not the norm for us with building and moving, so our schedule went out the window. That's the beauty of homeschool though :). I wish I could tell you I have everything scheduled but reality is we do what we can. Bible at breakfast is a must, followed by Math and Reading. Science we do 2x a week, and History is 2-3x a week. We try to get in everything but if we can't, we go for the basics-Math, Reading, Writing, Spelling. The rest is done on good days. I do have to mention that we will school through the summer as we had lots of breaks throughout the year. It helps with not getting overwhelmed and thinking we are somehow "behind". Phew!! This could be a whole video. Sorry for making it so long! Let me know if you have any other questions.

These are consumables and are provided for the student to write on. As far as creative writing, there isn't much in the younger grades, but more so as they progress. Which I prefer it that way. @@upstream_homeschooling as I said, I don't subscribe to creationism. However, public schools need to improve the quality of their textbooks and teaching methods. When I was in 12th grade, the astronomy and meteorology classes required us to look up information on smart phones. Half the time I had no idea what was going on. The history textbooks were a nightmare. Our US history books only went up to Bush Sr. in terms of Presidents and that was in 2013 when the school used those books.
