The sounddock 10 is a smaller version of the acoustic wave system ..it has an internal sub woofer beside the 2 smaller speakers not like other bose ipod docks that only have woofers...the bigger version the bose acoustic wave sound system (that looks like the soundwave radio) has a sub hidden inside..is the one that looks like the soundwave radio but double the size, the sub on the acoustic wave is pointing upwards into a tube that goes around the unit and blows the sub sound (much like the smalller soundwave radio with the 2 speakers..but with a subwoofer it reproduces a bigger sound like those in big instruments....similar but smaller the sounddock 10 blows the sub sound into a wave channel backwards and is a depper sound than the wave radio

Really good questions. With my limited understanding of self driving cars in mind I see some problems with your scenario. First, if you were driving you would not have all the information to hand (the driver being drunk, the number of passengers in the car, the innocence of the other party, etc.) or the time to mull it over rationally to come to the "right" decision as to who to save. Depending on speed and reaction time you would take the action that you judged was safest for you in the short time you had. This action might cause more damage and death than the original crash would have due to you being unaware of ALL your surroundings at the time. Second, self driving cars respond faster than a person could and so "should" stop before having to veer off anywhere. If it has to take avoiding action it would have more information to hand than you would, and faster reaction times, to take the safest action. Third, if all the cars are self driving then it doesn't matter how drunk the person is they wont have any input into the control of their car. Fourth, lets say that the collision is not avoidable. In this case I would assume, and this is all blind assumption, that your car would take the action that leads to the least damage being done to it, bystanders, and it's passengers. Your car would be far more aware of its surroundings than you would be even if you were paying full attention. You are right in stating that it's extremely unlikely that self driving cars would prevent 100% of road deaths but surely any improvement is better than none? That being said I think we're still a way away from seeing self driving cars being sold to the public. I think the main problem will be the transition between human and computer controlled cars. It won't be the self drive cars but the humans causing the problems.

wiffleblat Thanks for the well thought out response. To be up front I am all for self driving cars, I think they will save a lot of lives and really improve transportation. The scenarios I brought up were all to question how should the algorithms be programed. For example, should causing the least amount of damage to human life be the top priority? Should protecting the life of the driver be the top priority? The self driving cars will save thousands of lives, but especially during the transitional periods with both self driving and humans driving there are going to be a lot of difficult situations. The equation gets a lot simpler at lease i believe when all cars go to self driving. Say in 15-20 years.
@wiffleblat
@wiffleblat 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah I kind of dodged the question a bit. As it stands at the moment most people would act to save themselves even at the cost of other lives, it's kind of how we're wired; there are exceptions of course. Human life must be top priority and so I would say that the action that prevents the most lives lost is the appropriate one; but even that's not a complete answer. How do you program the choice whether to cause one death or cause life changing injuries, limb loss or paralysis, to five people for instance? I think trying to program to save lives and damage to humans is possibly the wrong approach. I propose programming the car to act so that it limits the damage to itself, with a caveat to avoid hitting squishy pedestrians to limit damage, and so keep damage done internally and externally to a minimum. It's a knotty problem. The program would have to be set in law and severe penalties for any tampering with it. Thanks for bringing this topic up. The more I think about it the more I realise there is to think about.

Josh Bobrowsky They will improve transportation until you get in your car one day and it refuses to leave your driveway because Google algorithms think the traffic is too heavy or the pollution is too bad that morning or your engine oil is a little low or your windshield washer fluid reservoir is empty. Imagine that one radar sensor fails, causing the fail-safe to kick in when you want to 'drive' home from work... who you gonna call? Imagine you're driving through the South Side of Chicago at 3AM... your check engine light comes on because the secondary O2 sensor detects an excess of Oxygen in the exhaust stream... the car is running fine but the software thinks your exhaust is just a little too dirty to continue... your computer elects to shut the vehicle down and coast to a stop on the shoulder of I90. Who you gonna call, Google Tech support?

nicomp1 I am not trying to make an assertion, I am simply asking a question. Maybe I wasn't as clear as I should have been. But, I think there are some tough questions that come up with regard to liability, how to handle programming algorithms when there is a choice of actions for the vehicle. I think the biggest thing that changes is a split second decision for a human is a decision that will be pre-determined by a program.
@nicomp1
@nicomp1 9 жыл бұрын
Josh Bobrowsky Your analysis of the computer-car's decision making process is an excellent argument against self-driven cars, no argument there. On the other hand, comparing death totals from driving against death totals from homicide is silly. Consider that the death rate on our roads is currently about 1.00 per 100 million miles driven: that is a very small number already. That number is hardly an argument in favor of letting Google take the wheel.
@iconsconsulting
@iconsconsulting 9 жыл бұрын
nicomp1 I understand that your math says 1 deaths per every 100 million miles driven. However, assuming your math is right the average person drives 12,000 miles a year. multiply that number by 60 years and you are left with 720,000 that means that you have a 1 in 139 chance of dying in an automobile accident in your lifetime. But the truth is those numbers are not evenly distributed across the board, so a male age 16-24 is significantly more likely to die in a car accident than a 50 year old female. Thus, among the at risk population it is a significant factor. Also, I would have to disagree with your assertion that 30k people per year is an insignificant number. I compared it to murder rates to show how much more likely you are to die by car than at the hands of another person. But at the end of the day, my hope was to have a discussion on the topic, which I completely appreciate you doing and your opinion as well even if I happen to see things differently.

Great questions. I've suggested these same questions will cause some interesting legal problems in the coming years. I think ultimately it will be the courts who de facto define the algorithms and who is liable for the decisions of the algorithms. The families of people killed (or injured) because of decisions made by automated algorithms will sue the manufacturers or the car and/or automated system and/or owner of the vehicle. As it stands now, courts can rely on the reasonableness of the driver under the circumstances and how little is in their control. Automated systems will generally lose that luxury because there is a clear, active, traceable decision being made by the system. The courts will either accept that a range of possible algorithms are accepted as "reasonable" or they will define the boundaries of what the algorithms must do. I think the biggest issue won't be so much the choice between other people to kill, but whether the algorithm can be biased to save the occupant of itself over other people. That is, will vehicle owners be allowed to have "selfish" self-serving algorithms that chose to kill others in order to save the occupant. I suspect not, but then there may be a black market in modding the algorithms to do just that. Interesting times.

Chad English Thanks Chad, I completely agree, it creates some huge liability issues as well as some really tough moral decisions. Who do you think should make the judgement call on how the algorithms work?
@nicomp1
@nicomp1 9 жыл бұрын
Chad English The courts will be involved less than you think: legislation will be passed indemnifying Google and GM from liability when their computerized car decides to hit a baby carriage rather than another vehicle in a parking lot. The only way this can possibly work is government protection of Big Computer and Big Auto. Another interesting scenario: your computerized car pulls into a busy Saturday afternoon parking lot at the Mall of America, decides the scenario is too complicated, and wants you you to take the wheel. What does it do? Does it stop dead until you slide over and take the wheel? More fun: assuming your computerized car is smart enough to recognize a flagger at a construction zone, what's to stop a homicidal maniac or a moronic frat boy from using the same flag to stop you on the way to work? What happens when someone waves that flag on the side of I75 and stops all 8 lanes entering into Atlanta?

People bash Beats because they're crap. But then Bose is crap too. It's like asking if I would rather get shot by a 30-06 or a 7mm Mag. NEITHER! :). The old sayings are true: Buy Other Sound Equipment (BOSE). No highs or lows, must be a Bose. I can give you the unpublished frequency response specs to prove it. Beats is even worse! Monster (the company that makes Beats) is notorious for overpriced crap. But they call it "Beats by Dre" to market to fools who don't know any better. What is truly funny is people listening to crappy lossy mp3 files on overpriced cheaply-made portable speakers talking about "quality."

But what makes me go WTF is when I heard a Beatbox salesperson say that it was designed 4 rap music. So I thought..well...95% of the rap artist (and I use this term loosely) are black. But that's ok. But I just wonder if say Bose were to fully promote one of their products for say country music. The NAACP, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton & Trayvon Martins parents would shit & scream racism. But it's ok if the blacks do it. U know blacks are typically the ones that keep this racism bullshit going

The Sound-dock-10 to me is just bad ass. The "bass" in the Beatbox is to in-your-face for me but the Bose, with its mini sub-woofer delivers bass that's balanced. It pissed me off when Apple switched its connector because ALL of my Bose equipment was for the 20 pin connector so I had to spend an additional $99 to make everything Bluetooth. What a racket.
