Thank you, Mark! Took me a couple of weeks (using Ableton 12 Lite, Behringer interface) & a lot of tweaking but this works 100%. My settings on Ableton not exactly like what you describe but works perfectly. I've been wanting to do Frippertronics for years, tonight everything finally clicked. Inputting with guitar, Chapman Stick, fretless bass, both plucked & Ebow. Thanks again so much. I owe you a pint or two, mate!

Great video, very inspiring to hear your journey with music gear. Also good to hear that you sell gear you don't use/gel with to avoid GAS. Just a quick correction at 14:36 where you talk about the Microfreak filter. It does have an analogue filter, but its just shared across all four voices in paraphonic mode i.e. if you press one key whilst holding another and there is a filter envelope it will retrigger it. The Minifreak solves this by having a filter for each of the voices if you need true polyphony.

Instant subscriber, I love the way you describe how devices work, and the visuals help a lot! I’ve also gone through multiple devices trying to find my ideal DAWless setup, and I’m really digging the Synthstrom Deluge for looping, sequencing and drums. I mostly use keyboards, so the desktop design really works for me. This pedal is a great piece of kit though, cheers!

As someone who started off "dawless" in the 90s I moved from that to partial DAW then to fully computer based. Due to space it was easier to work from a laptop and still be creative. I now run a hardware set up sequenced from the DAW with fx and mixing done in Abe and it will never change. It's 100% easier to sequence and mix on a DAW....100%. It's more rewarding to create sounds with hardware. Don't do things the hard way just to prove a point, folks. You are setting yourself back years trying to get comfortable with an environment that probably will never be compatible with your workflow.
@whirrings17 күн бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching and sharing your own journey. I think what works for each person is different and there is no one right way. Personally, I like to use modular and hardware sequencers more than DAWs for some work but not all.... I'm glad you've found a way that works for you! 🙌🎶
@meangene40817 күн бұрын
@@whirrings My comment wasn't aimed at yourself and It's wasn't meant as a critsism. There seems to be a real trend just now that "Dawless" jamming is some type of mystical skill akin to djing with vinyl. Both just take a bit more work to master and are achievable but, like you have shown, hardware producing takes a long time to perfect and generally costs 10x more. As an ambient producer myself I understand why you would want the spontaneity of your set up.
@whirrings17 күн бұрын
@@meangene408 I didn't take your comment as a criticism I was just pointing out that different things work for different people, some people hate using computers so aren't doing things "the hard way", not for them anyway! All the best! 🙏

I found an easy way to do this with a single Zoom MS70CDR stompbox pedal ($140). I use the long Delay model, set to 4 seconds, with its feedback turned all the way up, and it’s “trails” activated, so the delays continue when you click the effect off. Placed before that in the Zoom’s effect chain, I put a SlowAttackDelay model. This one I set to a slow volume swell, with a medium amount of repeats and a medium amount of feedback, and a bit of it’s built in modulation. Then I play a length of passage with the Long Delay switched on, until I get the loop I want, then I just switch the Long Delay effect off and keep playing over it as the trails continue. The trails of the ambient loop on the Long Delay will gradually fade out, so when it gets low enough in volume, I just switch it back on and start recording my next loop passage, then I switch that off and continue playing over it… repeating that process as long as I want. You can add other effects into this virtual chain, up to 6 effects, so I usually place some ambient reverb in between the slow attack delay and the looping delay. I believe Fripp used between 6 and 8 second delay times, but in my experience, 4 seconds is just long enough. For my loop passages, I just use single notes that layer into chords as I add more, like you did at 33:00

This is very useful information as I was planning to go on much the same gear progression. I currently have the Roland R0-5 (similar to R07 really) and was thinking to upgrade to the F3 plus the bendy tripod thing. If it works for you it shoudl work for me as I want to do a very similar thing i.e. record ambiences for musical purposes. I Love the tape-cut up stuff btw, would love to hear more of your early work <3

Hi there and thank you, glad you're enjoying the videos! 🙏 The F3 is a solid compact recorder and it's worked well for me. There are a few more compact options in the market now like the Zoom H1 XLR or the Tascam FR-AV2, I haven't used either of those though and so couldn't compare with the F3. 👍🎶

I like yor approach of recycling things and keeping it simple. I have a bit more gear than you do but only stuff that serves a purpose, like yourself I recently sold off everything I was no longer using or had moved on from. I have the Minifreak (the next synth up from the Microfreak) because it is such a good all-round synth and gives you huge bang for your buck. Otherwise just a few Volcas a sampler and Ableton.

You can do this on the Strymon El Capistan sound on sound function. It’s a fantastic tool. I have a Sustainiac pick up and so you can swell in infinite notes with a volume pedal. Pick a chord and keep swelling individual notes of that chord over a 30 second loop. The tape age and wow and flutter knobs can be adjusted to control the degradation. I love the off the cuff originality of it. Highly recommended if you want to do this but don’t have the patience to play with real tape machines

Tthe tape deck must have 3 heads so you can monitor the recorded signal. I've just nearly done my back in lugging the other A77 in to have its picture taken with the 'working' one, only to realise I can't upload it here! You can get a Revox for much less than you said - £400, but it will need work at that price. The hard bit is maintenence - there are cheaper hobbies! Thx for the vid.
@whirringsАй бұрын
H there, thanks for the info, and sorry about your back! 😬 For argument's sake how much would a fully working and maintained A77 cost you nowadays? I understand it's crucial for tape loop work to have a separate play and record head but do you *need* to monitor the recording in Frippertronics, isn't monitoring the source inputs good enough? What is it you do with your A77s? Thanks for watching! 👍🎶

Hi, I didn't realise this was possible! As it was greyed out I thought Ableton just wouldn't allow it hence the return track, but yes if you right click and "enable send" there it is! That would have definitely made it simpler, thanks for the top tip! 🙏

Hi! Nice channel. The frippertronic video is very well done. Here I have some complaints about Spitfire Audio / Spitfire LABS. As you surely know, LABS+ has recently shifted towards a subscription model for many new instrument updates, which I find quite disappointing (since LABS was originally known for being completely free!). That said, I agree with you that Trumpet Fields is perhaps the only LABS instrument truly worth downloading. If the goal is to access decent free virtual instrument sources, aside from the mentioned Decent Sampler, there are many sample libraries that offer great instruments as free demos for Kontakt. Unfortunately, most of these free instruments require the paid version of Kontakt, which can be frustrating. Native Instruments has always been somewhat ambiguous about the limitations between the free and paid versions of Kontakt. Sorry for the rant! On a more positive note, I believe Emergence is one of the most powerful granular synths available. I highly recommend the paid version - it's very affordable and absolutely worth every penny! Thanks, Giorgio (SOLYARIS MUSIC)
@whirringsАй бұрын
Hi there, thanks for the info. Yes, LABS+ is now much harder to use, there are still quite a few good sounds buried in there, I often use the Harmonic strings and the vocal patches as well as Trumpet Fields. And yes I love Emergence too, it's pretty unique in a VST I think. Unfortunately my 5 year old MacBook Pro finds it quite a struggle to run if I turn on too many grains! Thanks for tuning in Giorgio! 👍🎶
@solyarisoftwareАй бұрын
Here's a corrected version of your draft: @whirrings Emergence: Yes, I use the paid version, and I also have some issues with a low-spec machine with 8GB of RAMm but just when i push the number of grains to many many tents (the max is 600 if I'm not wrong). BTW, I just remembered that Soundpaint (an 8dio spinoff) offers a LOT of FREE instruments through its sample engine. What's nice about Soundpaint is the ability to "blend" original (real instrument) samples through a powerful engine that can do heavy pitch shifting and interestingly extreme time-stretching. Note that Soundpaint also allows you to import your own custom samples into the engine. Highly recommended!
@whirringsАй бұрын
I looked at Soundpaint briefly some time ago but it looks like they've added a lot of new free instruments, I'll definitely give it a go, many thanks! 👍

Thank you, very kind! I did try the Valhalla Delay trial and truthfully forgot it had a 20 second delay! It's a great option for this just never got round to buying it, should do really! I like the ability to add extra fx in the loop too... 👍🎶
@NigelMerrickАй бұрын
Thank you, Mark, very interesting - I love the whole Frippertronic / ambient type of music and sound. I did go through my various delay plugins and found that the Valhalla Delay has a maximum 20 second delay time, which is nice, whereas all the others are either 1, 5, or 8 seconds. I use Cubase Pro 14 as my DAW, but there doesn't seem to be a way to create the feedback loop you demonstrated in Ableton. I think Cubase has some built-in protection against tracks feeding back into themselves, but maybe someone else here knows how to get around that without constantly having to bounce out loops to audio tracks. Anyway, great info, as always, and all the best to you from here 🙂
@whirringsАй бұрын
Hi Nigel, yes it's surprising if Cubase can't do this, someone reported the same issue in Fruity Studio. I just assumed most DAWs would have an equivalent of this as it's just a standard physical mixer setup. I did try the Valhalla Delay plugin trial a while ago and truthfully completely forgot it has a 20 second delay! I should buy it really. The return loop technique does allow extra fx to be added in there though which is always fun. Thanks for watching Nigel 👍🎶
