Actually, melting them down would be totally destroying them and I don't do that. I just alter the form and preserve the details. I don't use the really collectible coins, only the more common ones.

What do you do with your scrap?
@LarryJHoman
@LarryJHoman 11 ай бұрын
I save it all in separate counts according to purity. 90%, .999, misc foreign, etc. Then wait for an inspiration to use it a different way. Probably a bit OCD, but it works for me and keeps things organized.

@@LarryJHoman So how can you use it. Do you make bars out of it or smelt it and pour it in molds?
@LarryJHoman
@LarryJHoman 11 ай бұрын
I have used a couple punch outs to make earrings. Drill a small hole then hang them from hooks. I haven't done any smelting. The silver bars wouldn't be .999 pure, so not likely to turn it into bars. Maybe down the road. For right now, it stays in the little containers. No plans yet.

do people ever report reactions to the coin silver rings?
@LarryJHoman
@LarryJHoman Жыл бұрын
By reaction, I am guessing you mean skin reaction to the metal when wearing the rings. I haven't heard of anyone reacting to the 90% silver coin rings. Some people react to the copper, copper/nickel, nickel and brass rings. It all depends on the level of acidity in your sweat.

If you are convicted of damaging U.S. bills or coins, you may face fines, jail time, or both. For bills, the maximum fine is $100 and the maximum jail sentence is six months. For coins, the prison sentence can be up to five years. To be convicted, you must intend to deceive someone. For example, the U.S. Mint warns that wearing the edges of coins to make them appear as error coins - coins mistakenly minted by the U.S. Mint, often rare and popular with collectors - and then selling them as error coins to collectors is a crime. If you have money to burn, congratulations - but you`d better not really light up a bunch of money. Burning money is illegal in the United States and carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, not to mention fines. According to Stampede, there`s an argument that there are three things you can`t do with fiat currency: If you think your money belongs to you, whatever you want, you`re not quite right. Your problem with cracking is because you are hardening the metal with your quench. Using water to quench is the worst choice when you want to harden metal. You are potentially introducing cracks. You should allow the coin to cool down slowly. That releases internal stress.
@OnlineEmailMarketing

Quenching with water is to Harden metal. No need to quench it until you want it hardened.
@LarryJHoman

Thank you for your input. I did an experiment a couple days ago. I made another Morgan coin ring, from a Morgan in really good shape, and did not quench at all after each anneal. It's the first Morgan I have ever had crack on me, and, rather quickly. I have never had his problem with a Morgan which I was quenching each time I re-annealed. I think I will stick with my annealing/quenching process as I have been doing for the past three years and others have been using for many more years than I have.

Does anyone make rings out of double eagle 20's. I see them for sale, but I don't think they're made from coins, and they probably don't have the same gold content. My dad had one from his birth year (1907), but I wouldn't consider turning it into a ring. Just curious.

You don't need heat. Just use the ancient technique. I spoon and patience. You tap around the coin until it's the right size. I have a gold dollar and a quarter on my hand now made like that. I even made my wife a wedding band out of a Nickle. That one hurt because my fingers were getting hit by the spoon,

Thank you for your support and kind comments! The coin in its original condition was valued between $30-40. The USA stopped making silver dollars in 1935 so there are none dated 1960-1970. The closest we have are half dollars. Up until 1964, they were 90% silver. 1965-1969 they were only 40% silver.

Destroyed a beautiful, rare, and irreplaceable coin
@LarryJHoman
@LarryJHoman Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the view! The coin was not particularily rare. The 1889 Morgans with no mint mark (Philadelphia mint) are one of the more common dates of that era with 16.15M produced. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and many people find the resulting ring to be just as beautiful and can now be appreciated by many more people than if it were hidden away in a drawer. And it can be enjoyed and passed down from generation to generation, same as a coin. To put it into proper perspective, there are far more Morgan silver dollars still in existence than are Morgan silver dollar coin rings. The ring is now more rare than the original coin!
