Oh, I can relate to this very, very well. I am a former self injurer who suffers from major depressive disorder. I was brought up in a very narcissistic, abusive, and dysfunctional family. Sadly to say, I was also told by many adults that this type of behavior was not considered to be child abuse. I was told that screaming, gaslighting, belittling, excessive spanking, scapegoating, etc, was NOT child abuse. Child abuse was things like sexual contact, burning with cigarette butts, hitting with a baseball bat, etc. I was told that it wasn't considered child abuse unless the child needed hospitalization. Maybe that is why I had three nervous breakdowns in my life. Thank God I got professional help, and I don't treat others the way that I was treated.

My father never hit my mother, but he used to hit me and my sister for the most absurd things. He would also scream and yell at me. When I would say "Why are you yelling at me?" He would respond by saying "Ain't nobody yelling at you. You're just imaging that."
