I have a team cheer photo with you in it. Good ol Maximum Velocity. Too bad I cannot attach it here. Shortly after high school I went through a pretty severe domestic violence situation for a few years and after escaping I became an addict. And it’s crazy to think that some of the worst experiences one could have in their life, Be it addiction, trauma, injury grief etc.. are the same experiences that can change your life for the better if you allow them to. I truly don’t believe in coincidences. I believe you went through this for a reason. Your story and videos are probably giving others hope that are going through the same thing. Today I get to help another addict who’s still suffering and you get to give others hope to keep pushing through obstacles, no matter the difficulty. You’re an inspiration.

When I was in college, one of the guys in our group of gay friends was in an electric wheelchair. (He had muscular dystrophy, and by the time we met him, he was fully confined to the wheelchair.) That was really eye-opening with regard to step-free accessibility. The university itself was pretty good, as were most public things in suburbia. But going to the gay bars/clubs in downtown Baltimore was a challenge since most of them were not even remotely accessible. I now live in Switzerland, and it’s surprising to me how poor the accessibility is compared to USA. I now work at a university, in a brand new building. And while everything is step-free in the building, none of the doors (except for the sliding main entrance doors) are powered. (Not like the college in Maryland, where every building had multiple doors with those big blue buttons to open them automatically.) My college friend would have been unable to operate them, as would not have had the hand strength and coordination to tap a badge and then pull open a door with a stiff automatic closer. Navigating the rest of the campus is possible, but requires knowing exactly how to use which elevators to get where, never a direct route. In my department, we have a new masters student who is in a manual wheelchair, who will be here for a few months doing his dissertation project. He has grip strength like a strongman, but nonetheless I can’t help but think that just the door situation must be frustrating. I could kinda-sorta understand it if this were a 100 year old building, but it’s just 3 years old.

The marriage thing is truly outrageous. Again, as societies, we should be generous to people with disabilities. I mean, if you marry, your spouse will still help with things that otherwise might need to be done by a government service. The current system is cruel and lacks compassion.

I mean, to me, the cost you stated of renting the van doesn’t actually seem that high (I expect that because the market for those rentals is quite small, the overhead for getting them where they’re needed is high, and they may have a lot of downtime). (Before you said $500 for a weekend, I had braced myself to hear you say something like $2000.) The real issue, as I see it, is what you said about income: as societies, we should be generous with the income we pay to people with disabilities.

This is such a real video. Thank you for sharing. Do you sometimes feel like you have to fake positivity or not show or talk about your challenges? Sometimes I feel like disabled people have to be positive to make non disabled people feel better psychologically I kinda feel similar sometimes…I have bipolar disorder and never really had a positive or happy life so far. But I know that can change possibly. It’s harder for physical disabilities, unless hopefully there are huge strides made in the future. Seeing you still pushing is inspiring ❤

Can I write in my first language (german)? Tell me if you could translate this, otherwise I have to use a dictionary.

I don't 'smash' things. Society is so sad these days. If people think 'smash' is a is a positive term...it's not. It's quite negative; hence, I won't do anything negative with your channel. There's no reason to.

Kenneth, Have you looked into grant programs for getting a van or subsidizing rentals? Your local office of the State Department of Vocational and Rehab might know about some.

I’m going to make a point of looking at people in wheelchairs because of what you said. I don’t want to make anyone in a wheelchair feel invisible. The only thing that consistently makes me feel better when I am down is to read the Bible. Drawing close to God by His Word brings me comfort and hope and peace. If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. ‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭2‬:‭13‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

I have days like that. I call them the "blah days." Things that make me feel better when I am down are music and writing. If you want to try writing a book, do a dictation, record your story, and get someone to type it and format it into a book. Take any pain, anger, goals, motivation, and secret dreams, and give them to the characters in your story. I hope you feel better soon.

I'm sorry you're feeling so down, but I think a lot of us can relate to the losses that come with disability.

I found you from the title of disability robbing you, as that is how I am currently feeling, so you are definitely exercising some of that purpose in this form of reaching out. Hearing other's related issues is always a helpful thing. I related completely to the ripping away of expected life and the questionable purpose issues. I had sudden severe spinal conditions onset in my 50s, and the shock of such a life change slammed me for several years (additional to the terrible physical condition itself). School is REALLY, REALLY, REALLY (x10,000) life saving. I'd don't know what I'd have done without it. Hope you like it too.

Nerve pain stinks! I have phantom limb pain and yeah it’s a -10 out of 10 experience. I also had CRPS, a rare nerve pain condition before I amputated my leg. I still technically have it, the condition is just more in remission now.

Also: the fact that your van was SO insanely expensive makes me really angry Things like this should absolutely be covered by an insurance since it’s obviously not your fault that you need it Thank you for always making us aware of the ableism that you are confronted with on a daily basis. I’m so sorry for you to having to deal with these things and think it’s amazing that you’re raising awareness!
