It's not obvious from the video, but the mine and countermine are very small and cramped - no surprise really, because they're dug through solid rock !

One of the guides told me people always walk towards the window on the first floor where the entrance used to be.

On the rear of the castle, in the longest wall, there is a very large arched doorway yet it seems to be walled-up only a few feet inward. Why was there such a large arched doorway there and why is it now walled up? Generally, castles had only a single entrance that would’ve been protected by a gatehouse, and if there was a back doorway, it would’ve been a small, perhaps hidden sally port, not a a giant door without a gate house. any explanation would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am a carpenter and I work in Edinburgh city centre .. I love the old designs and how great the masons works were and are! It amazes me .. That was my local castle when I lived in Dumfries when I was a boy in the early 1960's. I cycled there a few times with friends. I understood it meant fort amongst the rushes or something similar. In the mid sixties I occasionally exercised the dogs of the then current Lady Maxwell for pocket money. Nice video & nice to see the old place again. I have lived in the antipodes now, for several decades. I seem to recall there was some talk of a much earlier Roman fort in the same area.
