They build elephant rifles with the old guns, they can take alot of pressure. You know about Turnbull Restoration? Why would you think these rifles cant take the pressure from black powder substitute. I know these old barrels are have soft steel in them, but it is black powder and lead, so that is perfectly fine. You can also load them with smokeless with the right type of powder.

I do know who Doug Turnbull is and use a gunsmith that worked for Doug.....It was common back in the 60's to take model 88 and 71 Winchesters and turn them into .458 Americans or 50 Alaskans. Of course they changed the barrels and just used the actions. The name escapes me at the moment (Winchester Barrels?) but there is a company that will put a new barrel on the old action and put the original stamping in the barrel for about $600 I believe. I do use Accurate 5744 for loads in some of these guns. Only cast bullets is recommended....Blackhorn powder is also a powder that can be used but it is really expensive since Hodgdon bought the company. Shockley powders are good but impossible to find!!!

I use federal or cheddite 3" shells. Fiocchi would also work but they use a different primer which is like the holy grail to try and find. I get my 410 TPS wads from Ballistic Products or Precision Reloading. You have to use the TPS wads to protect your barrel. I get my tungsten from Ballistic Products or a gentleman that has a site called Hawg Lips. The powders like H110 or MP300 I get from Sportsman's Warehouse, Midway, Cabela's or a gun shop I use in Atwood Kansas that seems to have a good powder inventory at all times.

I have never used one of those charge bars that you have but they seem to have dials on them to dial up shot charge or powder charge if I’m thinking of the right set up? Mec has a technical service that would be really helpful for this issue….. I have had a couple of friends that have changed from this type of bar over to the standard Mec bars have the powder inserts.

Most Mec reloaders resize the brass hull and punch out the primer on the first station. It is adjustable too depending on the height of the brass on the hull. The only one I have used that does not is the 650 Grabber. If you are using on of these Mec sell a single hull resizer....

@oldmontanawisdom1 This is a great video I am new to reloading shells and I am reloading for clays. How do I know what wad I need. Is there a universal wad that works on federal Fiocchi Winchester I just see all kind of different info on it. And from this video your probably the only person that I feel like knows what there doing.
@OldMontanaWisdom1
@OldMontanaWisdom1 2 ай бұрын
If you are loading for clays you probably want a 1 or 1 1/8 oz load. The wad you use strictly depends on how much shot you are putting in the shell and what hull you are using. Some hulls are shallow and some deeper. You can use filler wads on the deeper hulls but I wouldn't go there as a new reloader. There is a little bit of cross over on wads and hulls but not much. You have to look at a reloading book like Lyman Shotshell. I would not use Fiocchi hulls because they have a slightly different primer pocket size and primers for their hulls are not readily available. Federal hulls are OK but you almost have to use a Federal type wad. I use Winchester AA or Remington STS because you tend to get more reloads out of the hulls. I tend to use my Lyman Shotshell books a lot because I am loading for a lot of different applications and tend to use a lot of different wads. Find yourself a hull you like, a wad that matches and a powder you like and can readily get like Red Dot, Clays etc and stick with it.....

I'm new to loading 12g. This video really helped me thank you so much question I seem to get powder that falls out of charge bar as I'm switching it and gets all over bench not a lot but like a sprinkle. Is that normal or is there a seal I can replace and any idea how to change it I got mec jr 600. From 1982 I believe
@OldMontanaWisdom1
@OldMontanaWisdom1 2 ай бұрын
There is a grommet and brass bushing that go on the powder side of the reloader where you screw the bottle in. Both are available from Mec or other reloading shops. Install the brass spring bushing and the grommet on top. This should help stop this issue.....

Interesting video. Isn't the key to Pott's flies the hair hackle weave? Your approach bypasses that. My guess is that Pott used the hackle weave as opposed to a hair collar for added durability. Thoughts?
@OldMontanaWisdom1

Somewhere in my files I have the original way Potts did his weave. Both are fairly close. I have been doing it this way for 57 years and find it easier for me and I have had no issues with durability. Hair you use is the same. If you know how do the original weave it would make a great post!!!

One of my favorite flies and always was a great producer. Must be about the same age and fished many of the same rivers in the 60’s and 70’s. Deadly fly on the Henry’s Fork in late June. I was never a good enough at tying my own to do these and never thought the fly shops wouldn’t stock them. Think it’s time to give it a try. Thanks!

Yes, I think it’s sad that these flies have disappeared from the commercial market. These used to be readily available at the Bud Lillies fly shop in West Yellowstone, Montana, or Fran Johnson’s in Butte Montana, I even bought some at Dan Bailey’s in Livingston. And yes, I’m sure we’re about the same age. I hope you give it a try!!!

Very interesting and helpful advice. Question if I may about Tungsten shot and having stray pellets hit elsewhere on the bird and then biting down on it at the dining table. It’s gonna break a tooth much easier than lead shot, yes? So what about using a larger shot size such as # 4 so to be easier to find it while prepping the meat? Is lead shot now illegal to use for turkey hunting in Montana?
@OldMontanaWisdom1
@OldMontanaWisdom1 2 ай бұрын
Lead shot is not illegal in MT for turkey. And yes if you bite down on Tungsten, it is gonna leave a mark! However I have not found any in the several birds I have shot with it. It seems to blow right through because of the density. #4, 5, 6 lead is fine. It just won't carry as far or kill as far. You gain kill distance with tungsten.....

The gun was safe and I have fired it several times off hand since, but best to be safe. I used Goex 2f, but have loaded up to Swiss 3f. I will stick to original BP only as I have heard the substitutes can have higher velocity and pressures. Best of luck to ya!

Beautiful pieces of history. Hang on to the 40-70 because it is rare. Please don't shoot anything but lead bullets in those guns as the barrels are soft. If you do only do it sparingly but my advise would be not at all. My observations come from many years of owning and shooting these guns.
@OldMontanaWisdom1

You are correct. Those barrels are soft. I shot a few jacketed to help clean out some of the lead. I went through eight bronze brushes to clean the barrel to a satisfactory condition on the 45-90. Have just shot GC lead in the 40-70.

Although I looked at your loads as well as some from Ballistic Products and used a few of them as a starting point we decided to do testing on our own that involved a couple months of work. We tested all sorts of hulls buffers and different weights of powders and TSS. The loads in the video in no way duplicate any load data you send other than powder type and the BP wad I have been using for years for all my 3” 410’s. And I would be happy to share some of the data we derived if you like? I mentioned your name as a source for TSS and other data for other gauges thinking it might increase your TSS business. If you want me to remove your name as a source I will be happy to do so but the load and chokes we came up with for turkey and mention in the video does not duplicate your data…. we put a lot of work into developing this particular load for turkey.
