It's a decent game that provides a quick Mythos Fix, and surprisingly, it's not hard to track down. NKG has copies of it for mid-40's. Two things I will say: 1. The dice are somewhat hard to read, but not terrible. 2. This game was made in Germany, so there are some minor quips in translation.

@PhoenixKnight0811 күн бұрын
I'm planning on trying this freeform with a different adventure later this month. Admittedly, that letter really bothered me, too; plus, I've done way too much with Night of the Zealot-esque scenarios to go all the way with it. That, and the sliding puzzle wasn't something I wanted to try (granted, I'm a solo player, so that might be coloring my thoughts on it a bit).

you do doglegs differently in ASG... I like how i learned it and it changes it into a 1-3 or 1-4 or 1-5... meaning for every 3, 4, 5 you go forward you go left 5... depending on the severity of the dogleg..
@idjester21 күн бұрын
i would suggest that you don't use wind until you get over the learning curve... maybe after you play it about 3-5 more times.. then you can add in wind.. you got lucky as the wind didn't happen but with my playthrough it was a slug with the wind conditions....

Regarding your narrative -- crisply written, and very concise. You're the first one to pioneer the narrative viewpoint from the Sector Controller perspective. I didn't want to tip my hand on how to do that, but you did well. If you continue writing the narrative from this perspective, I suggest you take a moment and review how radar controllers worked (which is one of the pages in the book). Then, my recommendation is that you write the following segments: a) set the scene, describe the tension in the Sector Control center, with the controller sitting in the mezzanine level, looking down at the big map as WAAFs move the German contact markers northward on the map; b) scramble the RAF Squadrons, describing them as they take off and you issue the first instructions; c) when you have NO COMMS, write to that! -- maybe something like this? "RAF 23 Squadron, Uxbridge calling. Take a heading of 120, Angels 18, Buster. Over." <STATIC> "RAF 23 Squadron, Uxbridge calling. Do you read?" <STATIC, still no response>. "Chain Home Beachy Head reporting, RAF 23 Squadron is heading 180 and engaged with Contact 3." Damn, I thought, then whispered to my assistant, Archie Woolsby-Rhys, "Looks like they've missed the call, Woolly, and now they've blundered into a gang of Messerschmitts." We stood silently together and watched in horror as the WAAFs moved the stand for 23 Squadron into a dogfight that we had hoped wouldn't have happened. There was no escaping it now, however, they were in the thick of it. The speaker crackled with the squadron leader's voice from somewhere over Channel -- "Tally-Ho, chaps! There they are!! Twelve o'clock level attack in Vics -- open fire on my order! -- NOW! FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!!" I stood transfixed, my mouth open. Momentarily, I was mesmerized by the unexpected action. Thank God for Woolly. He was on the horn already issuing orders to RAF No 56 Squadron out of Manston to hit the Dorniers heading north toward the convoys. They were on the bombers before I recovered myself. I looked over at Woolly and saw him looking at me with concern -- I had blacked out and he knew it. Still, there was understanding in his eyes. This would be our little secret. I would buy him a bitter tonight at the pub. The action was intense. The loudspeaker over the map table was tuned to the fighter communications radio. We could hear the pilots as they broke into the enemy -- it was impossible to separate the fights; everything was happening at once. "Red 3, Break! Messerschmitts behind you." "Get out, Bugsy! Get out! Oh God, they've hit him." "Does anyone see any chutes?" "Negative, Red Leader, he's afire alright." "Decker 2, Decker 1, flame one Dornier! There he goes!" "Decker 1, Decker 3, another Dornier hit! You see him?" "Break left, Red 2!" My eyes focused again on Woolly. He was looking at me with an intensity I hadn't seen before -- "Boss, the Daffy Squadron? Did you give them orders." I realized I had missed that. I shook my head slowly. Another mistake. We were barely ten minutes into the engagement and I was making mistakes left and right. The suddenness of the action had caught me off guard. We both looked down at the map. A WAAF, tied into the Chain Home radar stations, was pushing the stand that represented the Defiants to the south. They were blundering along, waiting for orders. Then the inevitable, the Defiants were calling amidst the action, asking for a heading -- "Uxbridge, Uxbridge. Manical calling. Do you have a heading and angels for us? Over." I tried to find the transmit button but dropped the telephone receiver instead. Woolly picked it up and took over the engagement. At least the sound of our boys in the fight seemed promising -- we were giving the Luftwaffe a run for it....

Thanks for the feedback on both the gameplay and the narrative. I could see myself continuing with a full play of this game, but I don't know if I'm going to continue narrative on this one. The problem (at least for me) is it's too disconnected. This is the same problem I've had with other operational-level games. The narrative here just doesn't seem to pop out for me like it does in MAG-23 or the RPG's as I've been working through those. It feels easier to me to bring the narrative out when you're more in the action; plus, I somewhat get the vibe here that you're writing the narrative from the perspective of someone who's essentially sending others off to do the dirty work. I hate that kind of leader in my personal life. It probably would be even worse in the military. Anyway, just my ramble on the narrative in this game. Still a great game, but the narrative (at least for me) just doesn't pop out.
