This is quite a journey, Andrew. I've had a few similar near-death experiences in the hospital too - I remember that BiPAP (my oxygen saturation dropped - they never did figure out why) and the NG tube... 11 years in and out of the hospital. I remember thinking it never would end. Sometimes I remember that time and just shudder - it feels unreal to remember how trapped I was and how exhausted my family was. I would compose music in my head to pass the time (I'm a composer/pianist/songwriter)... they should make a club for us post-trauma survivors, right? Thanks for sharing your AWESOME story with us all.

Never had an experience like this with any family member, but as a health care professional, I'd have been on the back lines watching this. I'm so happy for you that you made a recovery. Having never seen itin my 20 year career, I can't imagine what this was like for you or your family. I hope that everything is okay now, and keep well wishes for you.

so, please tell me you own part of the first hospital and part of the 2nd facility as well. so many mistakes and lack of professionalism almost cost you Andrew. i wonder how many people died or were adversely affected by their incompetence?

2019 this happened to me. Most make a near to full recovery. Many have residual side effects. Usually these don't affect quality of life.

By B.Peoples..years ago my niece was diagnosed with GBS . She had not been feeling well. Thought, it could have been a cold or flu starting. She went from walking and before she went to hospitsl had to use a cane to go inside. From a normal fun loving lady to bedridden and not able to do anything for herself. She went through months of theorpy and slowly she started getting back to herself. Her back still gives her trouble but went back to work. God answered our prayers. I pray for all having to go through this.

You have made my heart rejoice in your recovery. 🙌 I have Polyradiculneuropathy and my ability to walk has diminished significantly. But the Lord has allowed me to stay on my feet and I praise him daily for that. I always say things could be alot worse. My husband experienced being in the hospital at St. Thomas due to having an LVAD in 2017-2018. They were awesome treating him. He lived from December 11, 2017 to December 28,2018. We got to have an extra year with him and we were married for 30 years, 8 months , 4 weeks. You are truly a miracle and inspiration to us all Andrew!!

I love your story . In 2005 I was 40 years old and I got diagnosed with GBS. They think mine started from a back injury. Within 4 days from my first symptoms I was in the ICU on life support. Before being admitted to the hospital I went to the emergency room 3 times telling them something was wrong. They thought I was seeking pain pills. I begged them not to send me home . I knew something was seriously wrong. My last ER visit I was sent home barely able to stand on my legs. I went home that afternoon and laid on my sofa and told my husband I was going to die that day. He didn't know what to do. Every time he took me to the hospital they would send me home. I told him to please call my mom as I wanted to see her before I died. She could not believe my condition when she got to my home. At first she was angry with my husband but what do you do when doctors keep sending you home. She called an ambulance and by the time they arrived I was like a limp rag doll. There is no love like a mother's love. When we arrived she said we are not leaving until you tell me what is wrong with my child. Luckily this ER visit there was a neurologist there that did a spinal tap and found the problem. By that night I was on life support. I was totally paralyzed, I even lost my sight for a few days due to my brain swelling on my optic nerve. My family called in a priest as I was not expected to make it through the night. God is good. 20 years later I am still here. I am not 100 % . My left foot is partially paralyzed and my leg strength is very weak. I have to push myself up when I get up from a seated position and I have to use a cane when I walk. It was a huge battle to recover. Thank you for your story and thank you for letting me tell mine. Gog bless

My son had this in 1991, we lived in California and he lived in Texas. When we talked to the doctor he didn’t really expect him to live through the night, because in addition to GBS he also had Infectious Encephalitis….I called my sister in Texas and she said she’d go see him the next day as it was late and they were already in bed. I said ok and told her I’d be flying out the next day. Well she couldn’t sleep so she got up and drove a couple of towns over to see him, when she got there she had to put on protective clothing and then went in to see him. Before leaving her house she slipped a container of some sort of ashes she had gotten on a trip to India to see Sasha Si Boba. Sorry if I’ve misspelled his name, any way while she was in the hospital room with him, she put a small amount of ash on his lips and on his feet. Then she left and drove home. The next morning the doctor called me again, and he said in so many words that a miracle had taken place, and he could hardly believe what he was seeing because during the first call he said IF he did survive he would be a vegetable and confined to a wheelchair the rest of his life, but now he saw hope. My sister was not surprised by this at all, she felt sure that that bit of ash put on his lips and feet were why we were seeing a miracle. In about a week he was out of ICU and in a regular room. And was there about two weeks before being discharged. Sadly, he was killed by a hit and run driver about 10 years ago. One other thing, while I felt that my sister was free to believe what she wanted to believe, but if she thought those ashes helped my son, why didn’t they help her? She passed away from colon cancer six months later.

Brother you are an absolute fighter! God certainly has a purpose for you. You've got a wonderful family what loves you. Continue to be a good man and use what God has granted you. I was in a really bad motorcycle accident 2 years ago, nothing compared to your issues but I've had 23 surgeries since. Lost my job of 17 years, my home, but not 1 time did quitting cross my mind. One foot in front of the other Brother. God bless.

Wow! I have never heard of this before. What a wicked syndrome! The deterioration you fought back out of was like a resurrection. I was shocked that you did not give up. I think I would have given up. When getting as sick as you did, it would be easy to think you could not get better. Please tell us how you remained hopeful enough to keep trying. My favorite saying: "You never fail if you don't stop trying." Well done Andrew!
