The sawdust and glue trick is a great way to disguise the seams around the patch, but it's not perfect or completely invisible. The tighter your patch, the less visible that glue line will be. So take your time with cutting, marking, and templating the patch.

Glad you like it! Was there somewhere in particular that you're curious about that you saw in the video? Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're talking about, I don't believe that we have any true returns - all of the trim either 45s into a corner or butts into the door casings. There's nowhere I can think of that we had to do a fancier end piece.

I see you did not add any center supports. What is the length of your shelf span? Any issue with bowing/sagging? My shelves will be 36 inches in length.
@NineRingsWoodCraft8 күн бұрын
Mine are about 42 in long. No center supports, and no sign of sagging yet but they are still pretty new. If sagging does become an issue I'm planning to just put a small ledger on the inside of the trim boards on either side of the door and hope that that keeps them upright.

That's the joy of belonging to a maker space! Access to so many tools that I either can't afford or can't fit. And yes, I used a few fancy tools, but everything I did can easily be accomplished without them. The domino and 25 inch planer are conveniences, not necessities. Honestly, you could make a good quality version of this project with only a table saw with jigs, a drill, and some clamps.

Will this work with other types of saws as well?
@NineRingsWoodCraft19 күн бұрын
Absolutely! Any saw that has a reference face to the blade will work with this. So I use it periodically on my miter saw as well. I have used it just to test the angle of my track saw, but there's a lot more room for error with handheld tools.

The best thing is that since it's magnetic, I can store it connected to the bottom of the table saw, so I always know where it is. Works great for when you're looking to do weird angle cuts even better.

@writer5802Ай бұрын
Another mistake from me was installing a dadoed shelf into my nightstand. I was tapping it in from the back, but I cut the dado groove too close to the front of the side board. Blew right through the front. Since it was for me I just glued it, but you can still see a little line, which is annoying. Oh, and there's always the domino holes in the top of my vanity because I forgot to reset my festool depth stop.

Not in a million years am I gonna recommend someone bend and reach over top of a table saw blade
@NineRingsWoodCraftАй бұрын
Totally fair. I think the overall stability and ability to apply pressure in three directions simultaneously is far more secure than a traditional push sticks, but others certainly seem to have different preferences, and that's ok. I'd also add that 95% of the time you're not using this over the blade. It's only for thin cuts, and with those cuts a handmade push stick puts you essentially over the blade anyway. So while it looks very different, from a practical standpoint, your arm position doesn't change much at all.
@jonbloodworth474Ай бұрын
i hate the rubber grips so much. They suck. They get slightly dusty and stop working. Ive never used the grippers and had them not slide up the piece theyre holding down like it did in your video too actually but its still better than a crumby push stick, but a hand made one with hanging tail is prefferred for me
@NineRingsWoodCraftАй бұрын
Yeah, slipping can happen once in awhile. When that happens I'll use a second stick with it to get some forward pressure to reduce the slipping. The handmade ones are great too. Folks use them a lot up at my maker space. It's great that there are so many options available that folks can use what they're most comfortable with. As long as we agree that no one should use the plastic ones that come with the table saw haha.
@jonbloodworth474Ай бұрын
@@NineRingsWoodCraft I agree with 99 of what you said lol, the one that comes with is better than nothing! The one that came with my craftsman even was decent enough, never shattered when coming in contact with the blade or anything. The saaw stop one was thicker and softer so also no shattering, using two at the same time one for forward and one to keep it straight is pretty decent if you dont have scrap to make a proper push stick
@NineRingsWoodCraftАй бұрын
@@jonbloodworth474 Yeah, the Sawstop one is decent. WAY better than the Dewalt jobsite table saw one I used to have. I keep that on the fence in case I need a secondary stick for anything. Doubling up is decent. They're definitely better than nothing, but I never feel safe using it by itself!

@NineRingsWoodCraft 💯
@QargZerАй бұрын
Some scrap 3/4 mdf or plywood can make a pushstick that does the same thing but keeps you further from the blade.
@NineRingsWoodCraftАй бұрын
Yeah, those are definitely better than the standard push sticks. I've used those as well, and they're my next choice after the microjig, and are better on some cuts for sure. They also have the added benefit of being able to use the blade guard, which you realistically can't with the microjig. Everyone should absolutely use what they're most comfortable with!
@joshbrooks120Ай бұрын
Lol
@writer5802Ай бұрын
I love this thing. This kind of cut is great, but my favorite is using it when cutting grooves for door panels in the rails and stiles, to keep the board from wiggling.
@Dacious9sАй бұрын
I just don’t ever trust going over the blade.
@NineRingsWoodCraftАй бұрын
Totally fair. I will say I've misjudged the alignment in the past and had the saw cut a bit into the feet of the microjig, and you don't even notice. It doesn't grab it and throw it around dangerously if you mess up.
@08abreurАй бұрын
I agree that is making me cringe watch your arm over the blade, A cool product for sure but still yikes. I do see you have a saw stop but why risk it when a sled and clamp is far safer. I use a Felder k700s my self with overhead saw guard so you only can use the sled with a sacrificial back piece for those sorts of applications
@NineRingsWoodCraftАй бұрын
@@08abreur I'm not really sure where you're suggesting a sled? I only use the Microjig for rip cuts where they alternative would be to use a push stick. I absolutely use a sled anytime I can. Unless there's a type of sled for rip cuts I haven't heard about yet that I should try?
