Cache drive, more than one pool, yes - those are the things I would want. I would literally HATE this to get an app store with docker. It's just a NAS. Get a seperate system to work with VMs or containers, or apps, whatever you want. Let's not add complications to something that is so purely simple. I'd much rather have something that does storage perfectly, rather than trying to expand into something unnecessary. Just for me, of course, my two cents. YMMV.

This is awesome, thank you Ed. My Apple Time Capsule is near death and I have a perfect external 4TB Hard Drive and this will be a great project for me. I've always wanted to play around with an RP. One issue I have is that I don't have a separate monitor (just an older iMac that doesn't like to be an external monitor). I also only have wireless keyboards. I'd rather not buy an old HDMI monitor and keyboard just to get the RP-5 set up, but all the tutorials I've seen on using iPads or whatever are pretty fiddly. Do you know an easy way to get video out and keyboard input in without those peripherals? If I'm going to be poking around on RP devices, I should probably just get an old used set... thoughts?

thank-you for your reviews of UNAS. I've had mine for a couple of weeks, and have been very very happy with it. Im not sure what you say RAID 6 is not available, mine came with a RAID 5, RAID6 and RAID10 options? I think all folders need to be accessible to an administrator to enable easy backups. I recently upgraded my Synology NAS to DSM 7.2.2, and now I’m facing some annoying issues. Videos encoded with HEVC, especially those recorded by cameras (e,g, Sony A7C2), used to play smoothly in Synology Photo, but after the upgrade, they either won't play or only the audio works. I reported this to Synology, and they admitted it's their system”upgrade” problem but have no plans to fix it. They’re trying to cut costs by not paying for the video codec licenses. As a consumer, I’m really disappointed because they promised video codec conversion when I bought this NAS. Now they’ve quietly removed this feature with the so-called upgrade, leaving us without a function we originally had. Hoping you can bring attention to this issue and help us voice our dissatisfaction to Synology. Thanks!

Thanks for watching! The Bee Station can handle multiple accounts, so you should be able to run backups for your Android phones and iPhones. It’ll work with several cloud accounts at once, which is perfect for a family setup. Just make sure you configure it for each device separately.

Hi I did manage to do the direct connection between Mac Mini1 and Synology DS423 using ethernet cable and assigning IP to synology. I did this to increase the speed for Lightroom photo edits. It is much faster than going through network. It works really well except if the Mac is not being used for a while the connection to NAS is lost. In that case as you said hit Finder/ Go and connect to the server. Am I missing another step? Any idea why this might happened. Thanks
@DIGIBITEАй бұрын
It sounds like the Mac's energy-saving settings might be causing the connection to drop. Try disabling "Power Nap" and enabling "Wake for network access" in the Energy Saver or Battery settings. You can also add the NAS to Login Items to reconnect automatically after sleep. Make sure the NAS isn't going into deep sleep mode either. Hope this helps!

Would a 4tb or 8 tb be better?
@DIGIBITEАй бұрын
It depends on your storage needs. If you have a lot of data to store or plan on expanding your storage in the future, an 8TB drive would be better. However, if you're working with less data or have a smaller setup, a 4TB drive should suffice and could save you some cost.
@johnibsuser6723Ай бұрын
ext4 max single file size is 8TB
@DIGIBITEАй бұрын
Yes, you're right! The maximum single file size on an ext4 filesystem is 16TB, not 8TB. If you're using ext4 and are planning to store large files, such as high-definition videos or backups, you shouldn't face any issues with files up to 16TB in size. If you're choosing between a 4TB or 8TB drive, consider your current and future storage needs. An 8TB drive would give you more flexibility if you plan to store larger files or expand your setup later.

U.3 is better
@DIGIBITEАй бұрын
It sounds like you're referring to the U.3 interface for storage devices. U.3 is a newer interface standard for SSDs, designed to provide better performance and flexibility compared to older interfaces like U.2. Here’s why U.3 could be considered better: Improved Performance: U.3 supports higher data transfer speeds, making it ideal for applications that require fast storage access. Flexibility: It’s designed to support multiple types of drives (SATA, PCIe NVMe) on the same port, allowing for more versatile usage in systems. Future-Proof: U.3 is a more future-oriented standard, ensuring compatibility with next-gen drives and technology. If you're looking at an SSD for performance or future-proofing your setup, U.3 would be a solid choice.

I have found that a 2.5Gb Ethernet connection to my NAS seems to be sufficient for at least basic editing. My H.264 10-bit 422 footage requires about 20MB/s bandwidth from the NAS for playback of a single 4K stream. The NAS has sustained speeds of about 250-260MB/s Read/Write, so I would expect to be able to handle about 10 video tracks assuming latency is still acceptable (the NAS has SSD storage in addition to an HDD RAID array). I would expect media from the SSD to play back with a lot less latency than the HDD array, but haven't done extensive comparisons yet.
@DIGIBITEАй бұрын
Your setup seems well-optimized for basic editing, and testing latency with SSDs vs. HDDs under load should confirm their performance differences.
