John Williams is a great guitarist, no doubt. But you can feel that he is not Spanish - the soul is missing. Listen to the version of this piece performed by Paco de Lucia and you understand what I am writing...

It’s called “Deuende” the spirit of one’s “Soul “ that lights a fire 🔥 of wantan creativity. From Flamenco 💃 dancers to Flamenco guitarist. When I hear this , the hair on the back of my neck twinge’s . And I ‘m thinking that it’s time to play some of this beautiful music. And get back to my paint & brush. And let my “Deuende” create a true masterpiece! Thank you John.

No toco ningún instrumento.

A now in 2024, I thank you Maestro, your album Bridges, arranged by Stanley Myers, got me through university 40 years ago. The album notes I recalled said "God placed a finger on your brow" -Indeed. An extraordinary artist. I always carried that quote with me. Remain ever blessed!

I saw him play this. I paid for front row seats. I thought he was 'off' on the night I saw him, so much so I felt ripped off considering the price I paid for the seats. For two of us it was getting on for $500, 30 years ago. Someone nodded off near us also in the front row and when Williams hit a wrong note he woke up. Williams glared at him mid performance LOL - he must've been a guitar player who nodded off I reckon. I couldn't stop laughing. I was like a school kid in church trying not to laugh, but the irony of the expensive seats, the genuinely poor performance by someone who'd rather be down the pub than performing for us and the cliched guitar piece all became apparent. Don't misunderstand me, this is deeply beautiful work of art by Rodrigo, the embodiment of the guitar in Spain (even though he was a pianist) it's just become like the Sound of Music on TV - it's on every week. I can't stand the congratulatory handshakes and cheering at the end either - it's nauseating. It was a long time ago but I felt Williams' heart wasn't in it. It's understandable it has become a bit cliched like Beethoven's 5th. I prefer guitar with a chamber orchestra really. The instrument is better enjoyed in an intimate setting don't you think? Support local musicians who love to play for the joy of just performing and entertaining us with their passion.

Circa 1980 as a young man couch surfing the world, had the joy to meet with a very fine classical guitarist in London, when asked if there was something he could play for me, this was the only song I could think of, I only knew it from Miles Davis's Sketches of Spain album, and he informed me that it was a very boring piece for a guitarist to play. I'm not a musician and just sharing an old memory. On a side note he did play some amazing stuff that I have no recollection of what any of it was called, I was young but had heard Sketches of Spain since birth. Just to be clear casting no shade on John Williams or the other musicians, just a 40 odd year old memory.

Take nothing away from John Williams, his performance was immaculate, however I am awestruck by the cor anglais, oboe and bassoon soloists. The most difficult wind instruments in the orchestra and the rendition was perfection. I wept.
