@@j.powellnetwork The most relevant sentence from the ToS:`Company[Bandcamp Ventures LLC] will not have any ownership rights in any elements of an Artist’s Music`. Artists should however keep an eye on changes and what is happening to their copyright material, there is a change log for these ToS (scroll to the bottom). The contract ToS are written in pure legalese, but there is a plain 'English' version at the top. Terms like `Exploit`are confusing, its legal meaning is different from the commonly accepted form, which has many negative connotations. In reality the ToS, from the perspective of artists, have only changed recently to exclude 3rd party claims (shifting liability on to artists), and of course minor changes related to EU data protection laws and change of ownership of BC itself.

I want to make clear that the actual wording in the terms of conditions talking abt this is purposely vague because… that’s just how the legal world works. Lawyers and legal people do that just so there’s flexibility when the time comes in the future where BC gets into stuff like that. So in short, I think you’re blowing this way out of proportion. This new change to the T&C isn’t that new, I saw a Twitter thread talking abt this a few months ago, but if this news discomforts you in any way, do the thing makes you comfortable in how your art is used and represented. It’s still a good way to support artists tho, given the indie cred that it’s built up over the years, so idk make up your mind abt it Edit: TL;DR this new change to the terms and conditions doesn’t mean they WILL use your music, it just means they COULD in a situation where they have to for some reason

Bandcamp was bought by a bigger company that I believe is into streaming, so they could be suspect, but NO COMPANY is worse than Spotify, so if anyone is claiming Spotify is better than Bandcamp, they are just lying.
@DashGlitch

Bandcamp was bought by Epic in 2022 but then sold in 2023, I've been on BC since about 2018 but going hard since 2020. It's been the only single revenue stream worth banking on my music most of the others cost me to keep my music up - in fact Bandcamp keeps the rest afloat. The rights ownership thing is not true - Bandcamp states artists will always receive the highest revenue split. The weirdest part is that my sales saw a huge spike around 2022 and have continued climbing, thus resulting in the Epic acquisition perhaps being in favour of artists/Bandcamp in general - atleast that's what the stats say.

so this video randomly showed up in my recommended, and looking back over Bandcamp's terms of use, I think the idea that they can "exploit your music however they see fit" might just be a misconception? I went back to double check the paragraphs regarding the intellectual property rights of artists and they did in fact use the word "exploit" several times in a way that sounds like what you briefly described, but it was only being used in the legalese context of how taking their standard 20% or whatever cut of the revenue legally counts as "exploitation" or how creating a downloadable zip of wav files counts as "reproduction" or automatically converting it to MP3 if a fan so chooses that option legally counts as a "derivative work", etc., just the legally binding rights to run the site itself and nothing else. I'm obviously not a lawyer so don't take my word for it, but I don't think the artists lost any level of control that they had before don't get me wrong I know exactly where your suspicions come from, with the company having changed hands multiple times behind the scenes and especially after Songtradr bought them up and laid off like half their (already small) staff I will not deny feeling some level of paranoia that something shady of that nature could eventually be implemented, and to your point that kind of paranoia obviously wouldn't be present if I purely distributed my music through a self-owned website. but I don't think anything of that particular shady nature has actually come to pass for Bandcamp yet, as someone who regularly uses the site every day both as a music fan and an artist it seems to operate pretty much the exact same way it always has

This news is upsetting because I love Bandcamp, I never found another platform that has so much high quality independently released music on it. I paid for a lot of the albums that weren't just being given away for free on there and it's upsetting if that money didn't reach the artist because stealing intellectual property is not ever ethical and it seems the wrongdoing aforementioned in the video is the kind of thing that Prince fought against when he was still here. Also there definitely is not a platform that has more instrumental hip-hop, vaporware, or dubstep.
