I do not work from home, so I do not have to worry about this stuff. However, I have other challenges with my dog. Also learn to enjoy the smaller things in life is great advice. I work outside and sometimes the weather sucks. It gets cold and getting a warm coffee even a crappy instant coffee warms me up, lifts me up. The little things help to embrace the suck.

@@busywithdogs My challenge is I got the wrong dog breed for my lifestyle. She is a 90lb rottweiler. Very sweet girl. Getting home from work I am tired sometimes. I want to take a nap, but I can't. I cannot relax when I get home, I have to take her out for a walk. She is really strong so can be challenging when I am tired.

@ That’s tough! Can you hire a dog walker or have a friend take them out during the day? I like playing rug with my dogs to drain their energy on nasty days. 10 minutes of tug drains faster than a walk, especially when the weather is gross. youtube.com/@mccaandogs has videos that may help you get some ideas on how to drain your dogs energy. We did their online puppy school for my dog, Clover, and the instructors are great. Their KZbin channel is full of great videos and free resources. Instructor Shannon had a Rottweiler and she is just fabulous.

She does favor the shepherd a lot, but she hold her tail like a cattle dog, has a blue streak on her chest and her face and build has some cattle dog. She honestly looks like a perfect blend of the two. Her personality is a bit more of a cattle dog, I think.

My brother had a shepherd that my parents found as a stray and she lived to be about 12 or 13. Clover is actually a shepherd mix, with Australian Cattle Dog, so I hope she lives a good long life. My pets have always lived long unless there were bad circumstances. We had a dog hit by a car in our own driveway, which was just awful. We had a cat just pass away at 10, which is young, but, he had feline leukemia for 6 years and that is a way longer than he should have lived.

Thanks for the shoutout!! 100% agree dogs should be familiar with using a crate. Vets, groomers, heck even in a disaster that's what they use to get the animals. The worst part for me with crate training is the whine and separation anxiety at first. Those puppy cries, oh my heart. Making it a game or using a clothing item in there that smells like you helps, and yes with heelers they go, hey I don't need that anymore I know the rules and they get fussy with it ugh. Furry little children lol
@busywithdogs

So true, being crates for dogs is a basic skill. Some dogs never learn to love it, only tolerate it. Those things do help, but sometimes that girl just doesn’t want to be alone. I am going to send you pictures on ig of what I just came home too. We had a family event a few towns away, and girly clearly did by like being left at home crated.

My girlfriend and I have two cats, but we always lived with dogs (she with her parents, me with mine). We really want a dog. Only problem is our work. I do shifts, so 6:30-14:30 or 14:00-22:00. My gf is gone from 8:00-18:00. We thought about adopting a greyhound (one that is good with cats so they can accompany eachother) or getting a doberman/dachshund. Are these breeds “good” for us you think? (We did our research but want honest opinions). Btw we live in a house, small garden, BIG shared “garden” in front, but we have many many nice places to walk and let them “free”. So only problem is time but we don’t want to have a depressed dog.
@busywithdogs
@busywithdogs Ай бұрын
Sounds like y'all have a great situation for a dog. All breeds you listed are great, but I think each has a different concern. The Greyhound is tricky, they are more independent and cat-like in some ways, but they are sight hounds and it can be tricky to find one that is good with cats. How your cat reacts to a dog is a big factor. If they run from dogs, this could be a bad breed for your situation. My cats don't run from dogs, they let our dogs approach, and sniff, and if they are done with the situation, they exit calmly. This is good because they are not triggering prey drive in my dogs as easily. My almost 11-month-old herding cross has some prey drive and we do a lot of work with her and the cats. It can be done, but you need to be prepared to train through it for the first few months, regardless of the breed of dog. Dachshunds are usually better with cats, the greater concern is they are prone to separation anxiety, so measures will need to be taken to prevent that from happening. If they bond with the cats, then this should lower the chance of that happening. Dobermans are fairly neutral with cats, so this is a good choice. They are prone to separation anxiety and anxiety in general. Because they tend to be more neutral with cats, the chance of them bonding with your cats is lower and that may not help the dog while you and your girlfriend are at work. So it may be more work on your end to keep them from developing anxiety. They are also a breed that you need to be 100% committed to and understand. Side note, check your local ordinances to make sure it is legal to own a Dobbie in your area. Unfortunately, they are not allowed in some areas and I would hate for you to have to deal with that. Dobbies and Greyhounds are not for the underprepared handler, in my opinion. As with any breed, understanding the history and purpose of the breed will help you. Dobbies was bred for the purpose of being a personal guard dog and later was crossed with a Greyhound. Do you want that in a dog, and are you and your girlfriend prepared to handle that kind of power? The Greyhound is an ancient breed bred to chase small prey across the deserts for the pharaohs of old. Are you able/willing to provide for the need for running? I know I asked more questions, but I honestly think that they are important for helping you decide. I hope you find your perfect heart dog.

do you have any doggy breed recommendations that are more independent? my dream breeds are dachshund and cavalier king charles spaniel, but both of those are very prone to separation anxiety :( im not really interested in pugs or other flat nosed doggies
@busywithdogs
@busywithdogs 2 ай бұрын
My personal favorite independent breed is the Great Pyrenees, I have had two. However, I know this giant breed is not for everyone. Here is a list of other breeds that I would consider. Chinese Crested (The powder puff ones are adorable!) Greyhound Lhasa Apso Maltese Poodles Keep in mind, that more independent dogs are not always the easiest to train and can require a different tactic to train than other breeds of dogs. They are trainable, but you can't train them with the same tactic as a Golden Retriever. Also, more independent breeds are prone to be escape artists in backyards. They also usually don't make good off-leash dogs. However, all of these traits can be overcome with vigilance on the owner's side. I do have a free system that I use for getting my own dogs, you can find it here. www.busywithdogs.com/dog I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions.

We greatly appreciate the prayers. There will likely be a class action lawsuit since it seems they were storing hyperreactive chemicals where they could get wet. From what I understand, there was a small fire that triggered the water sprinkler system that put out the initial fire, and that triggered the chemical fire. We shall see how that plays out. The good news for us is that the air has cleared up some.

This tag is working nicely as a preventative, which I love because of how much work we had to do in the past. Just a caution: I had a dog that had seizures caused by pine-based cleaning products, so I stopped using them entirely. It may not be an issue for your furbabies, but it is worth mentioning.
