The dog training world is this way - R+ only or Alpha/dominance. They can be real black/white about it. It took a while for me to figure out, with my Novice A dog in the competition world & pandemic times, there’s a happy medium. He’s 4.5 now (Golden Retriever) and we are really enjoying a good relationship. I also thought about being a good parent when you first mentioned this. It has been fun figuring out for me not to be so serious/not fun to him really enjoying when we train together - and play, settle in the house, etc. I have learned to ignore the my way or the highway people.

Yes, it is essentially two perspectives, neither based on any behavioral science associated with how higher-order social mammalian species teach offspring life skills. It's as if the all-positive clan lives in or thinks their clients live in a Disney movie, and the Alpha/Dominance clan lives in or thinks their clients live in a Game of Thrones movie. 😄 Thanks for your input. - John “Ask The Dog Guy” Wade 🐾 “Dog Training That Embraces Science and Common Sense” 🐾

Until they are adult their instinct controls them. It’s natural in my opinion no dog should be certified under the age of one. And they need to complete testing to verify they are ready. It’s not just pay a fee and print out a piece of paper. So many dog owners let their dogs of leash at parks etc. I 11:17 dogs have a higher instinct level, guard dogs. In an emergency the instinct kicks in before the brain. Fighting dogs and, dogs with large muscles for protection. With this in mind, how can you make your dog a service dog? Company’s providing these certificates need to take accountability. If they do not someone or someone’s dog will get hurt.

Hi, Mandy, thanks for sharing. I would add that if you mean by “instinct” - what a dog has been selectively bred for (guarding, herding, etc.), “kicks in before the brain,” I would add that depends to a large extent on training. Dogs selectively bred to retrieve ducks that jumped out of the boat before being told to “Fetch” wouldn't go hunting more than once. Dogs bred to herd that wouldn't start and stop at their handler's request would also get fired, so to speak. Dogs bred for the drives associated with guarding would also be an enormous liability if the correct approach to training and maintenance of that training wasn't also in place. I just don't think dogs bred for guarding are the best “tool for the job” when it comes to the service dog world. If something were to happen to the service dog owner where they required first-responder assistance, there's no one to direct the dog, and then, as you say, perhaps all that's left are the dog's instincts. :(

Agreed..I recall this couple who had a large pit bull they raised from a baby. Then they got a second pit bull to raise as a baby. The baby pit bull was hiding under the bed. The owner was using a broom to try to get her to come out. The older pit bull attacks her and ripped 1/2 her arm off. Thankfully the neighbors were home upstairs. The dogs are innocent they don’t know any better. As smart as they are they are not humans and can’t understand all scenarios. The big pit bull was protecting the baby pit-bull.

Can you recommend a larger breed dog not for guarding, for companion . I am a senior , have gone the small dog route , not for me . One thinks they are easier , they’re not . I owned Chows totally well raised but you are right . He was great but when the new baby was in the home you were not getting in , major protection mode instinctively kicked in . Thank you John , you’re a fantastic resource .

Hi Betty, I'd be happy to make some suggestions, but to help narrow it down, it would be helpful to learn a bit more about your overall lifestyle in the sense of your activity, the things you like to do where you'd ideally include your dog, if you live in an apartment, in the city, in the country, etc. Take in to consideration as well what your life will be like throughout the lifespan of a dog. You probably should send that to me privately, so here's my email address - [email protected]. I also highly recommend reading this article as it's equally important when it comes to finding the ideal dog. My puppy is 3+months ((under 4)) she was doing great with puppy pads she still was taking a pee on the floor and not the pads only no more than2 times other than that training her on the pads was gojng great and those rare accidents not on the pad wasn’t so much of a deal as I knew she was learning and accidents were expected reassured she knew where to pee on her pads .. BUT all of a sudden she has began to use my floor throughout the house to pee !! 🤦‍♀️ i don’t understand why she has suddenly gone to the floor ?? I’m still continuing with the pads and my response to her peeing on my floor is responding consistently &repeating my same reaction each time Changing my tone and calmly sayin the words On your mat whilst placing her in the middle This is what I did when I first started puppy pad training and was successful untill now . Do you have any ideas on why you think she has started peeing off the mat ? I would be greatful to hear your thoughts and opinion . Hope this makes sense 🐾🐾

Hi @SAEW1495, When a puppy of that age and gender (possibly, but less frequently, males) has been doing “great” and “all of a sudden” starts peeing with frequency here and there throughout the house, it's almost always a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) or something similar. Take her to the veterinarian; if that's the diagnosis, the vet will prescribe some antibiotics, likely ten days worth. By the third or fourth day of the antibiotics, you should be able to get things back on track. If the diagnosis is a UTI and you find things aren't better by the fourth day, get her back in with the veterinarian. Over the past year, quite a few of my clients who have had pups with a UTI have found that the standardly prescribed antibiotic hasn't worked, and it had to be switched to another. If you have difficulty getting her back on track, email me ([email protected]) and ask for my free “Puppy House Training Cheat Sheet.” - John “Ask The Dog Guy” Wade “Dog Training That Embraces Science and Common Sense” 🐾

Hi Joanne, this is pretty normal, and he will eventually outgrow it. In the meantime, take him out only on a leash to minimize his access to distractions and take him to one spot. going through the same issue right now, trying to transition my 5-month old poodle from pee pads to outdoors. We got him in December and the NYC winter + lepo/parvo outbreak + living in a 3rd floor walk up did not lend itself to immediately training him outdoors. We actually tried outdoors immediately for the first few weeks and it was working, given with some accidents, but we stopped out of fear he would catch something and get sick. outdoor training starts tomorrow and we're planning on taking him out of the crate first thing in the morning so he can mark his scent and continue to go in that spot, but what's your reasoning for not removing the pads completely from the apartment? he will be going on the pavement outside, not grass. we will also supervise him heavily (and use the crate when we can't) during this transition period. Do you think removing the pads will cause more accidents than it's worth? we're worried that keeping the pee pads inside will confuse him. thanks for your help, this video was great!

@askthedogguyYouTube Жыл бұрын
Hi Marissabee. I think removing the pads and cold turkey may result in more accidents. It might be okay, but slower is always faster when dog training. 😄 Try keeping the pads in place but moving them closer to the door very gradually while reducing their size. Also, put the same type of pad in place outdoors where you want him to go more permanently. Weigh down with some rocks and use if you can an already soiled one. Again, very gradually reduce the size. If you send me your email address, I can send you a chart and a cheat sheet review. - - John “Ask The Dog Guy” Wade - 🐾Embracing Science and Common Sense🐾 Visit www.askthedogguy.com For A Free Weekly Newsletter & FREE Brain Drain Activity Guide For Your Dog

@@askthedogguyKZbin a true American pitbull terrier and there are fewer and fewer real ones. 90 percent of the ADBA registered pitbulls are the real ones. To answer your question a real pitbull is a terrible guard dog because the human aggression has been bred out this purpose of this breed is to be able to kill all other dog breed’s because sadly when they were created there were not many ways to make money. They piss fire but love people. American bullies are now a new breed all together and they have 3 kinds within micro, standard and XXL. They are mostly bred and created for looks so the tampering has cause new looks and more aggression towards humans in some cases and they are not nearly as game or as good at fighting.

@@askthedogguyKZbin You sort of ran by it too fast. I didn't quote you verbatim but the idea is still there. You were talking about some kind of time limit I guess maturity or two or three years of trying their way before they figure out they need to use a better way of training I guess and then you talked about limited resources or can't find the resources and then they get too big and I thought you said nobody would touch him it's probably about the three quarter mark you were real close to closing or getting to your outro. Because I was clueless as to what you were talking about with the two or three years I was thinking neutering them and you were probably just talking about training, and I misunderstood because it seemed like you were trying to say to her three things at the same time and maybe you were abbreviating speech I don't know. I mean a veterinarian has drugs and darts and there's nothing they can't handle ,so can't be that right?
@askthedogguyYouTube
@askthedogguyYouTube 2 жыл бұрын
I think it was the 'fixed' where I got confused and may have confused others. At first reading, I thought you meant fixed in the sense of neutering. I meant fixing a large, aggressive dog vs. a small aggressive dog in the sense of rehabilitation. It's just a lot harder to safely do rehab with a dog that can dangerously Tsunami its handler and put the handler at risk or other territorial or prey targets. Some dogs get rehomed or euthanized, not because the rehab potential isn't there, but because the risk regarding safe-handling practicalities in their existing ownership is too great to reach the desired destination. Hope that clears it up. - John Wade 🐾 (www.askthedogguy.com)

Better to get the males neutered.
@askthedogguyYouTube
@askthedogguyYouTube 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rife. It's an interesting topic. My video about the Dachshund elaborates a bit. When someone is in over their head, it (neutering) might help, but typically it's not the panacea that some make it out to be. One could argue that if you have to put a governor on your Ferrari, maybe you shouldn't have one in the first place. In any event, it's not where I start. I look at it this way - if my son's teachers complain that his behavior is unacceptable and that he should be neutered, I'd first wonder about their teaching and my fathering skills before reaching for the scalpel (or a prescription). 😄

No harm in it, certainly with breeds prone to health problems. Might be overkill though (depending on cost). Once a dog moves into its senior years, if it's done annually it's a great early diagnosis/intervention tool for a veterinarian. Also, a good idea to have done particularly if the dog isn't thrilled with the vet when they're planning on using an anesthetic anyway, like for neutering, teeth cleaning, etc.

It will depend on a few variables. What her personality was like before the incident. How well she listens to you when the stakes aren't high, etc. A lot of dogs, most I'd say think of their owners more as roommates, rather than loving authority figures they'd take advice from. That's normally where I start with clients in similar circumstances. Some desensitization might be possible with visuals on a high-resolution television or computer screen and audio of dogs barking. You could try to see if she is triggered by these things and with some guidance learn how to build her confidence. Does she have any dog friends, she still likes? If so, walking with them might help take her mind off of the experience. I'd recommend getting some help from someone with some experience. If you can't find anyone, I have a very thorough virtual program. Let me know if you want me to send the details. - John Wade 🐾 (www.askthedogguy.com)

Hi PrettyBigBurd2, I've worked with and have written extensively about Cane Corso training and have a few Cane Corso videos for this channel planned. I get so much mail about the breed, I'll very likely start a Cane Corso Behavior specific channel. I have a few options for you in the meantime. The first is to send me some video examples of the problems you're having so I can do a video for you and other Cane Corso owners. The second is to look at a couple of ebooks I've written. This book is a little late in the game for you as it's more for people thinking of becoming Cane Corso owners or with very young puppies, or even people breeding. - The Five Most Common Cane Corso Mistakes, How To Avoid Them And End Up With Your Dream Dog (e-book) (store.askthedogguy.com/the-five-most-common-cane-corso-mistakes-how-to-avoid-them-and-end-up-with-your-dream-dog-e-book/). Alternatively this book might help understand why you're not making progress. It isn't so much about training (how to), as it is about what to avoid, and what to seek out if you're looking for Cane Corso appropriate training methods, What Are The Different (and best) Puppy and Dog Training Methods (ebook) (store.askthedogguy.com/what-are-the-different-and-best-puppy-and-dog-training-methods-ebook/), or skip that and read this one as it will kickstart you in the right direction. The Beautiful Balance - Dog Training with Nature's Template (store.askthedogguy.com/the-beautiful-balance-dog-training-with-natures/). Lastly, and free is to visit my website, www.askthedogguy.com, and do a search for Cane Corso, as I've written a ton on the breed.
