A bit late to the party, but just wanna say... No, I don't mind HIM, and actually, as an enjoyer of the original song, appreciated this cover too. However, back in my Russian high school times when (some) girls were listening to HIM, I was listening to Finntroll and Children of Bodom. It's a matter of taste, of course, but generally in Russia HIM had a reputation of a "boys' band with distorted guitars" (since Twilight was not made yet to become a more accurate comparison). And when it comes to guitarwork, I think you would also agree that Alexi Laiho was on a whole different level from whoever played guitars in HIM. So in the end, the main selling point of HIM besides their "teen-girl-dark-edgy-love-romance", i.e. the heavy sound, was quite overshadowed by other, more masterful and stunning in that regard Finnish bands (and 2000s only added more names to that list - like Omnium Gatherum, for example).

You gotta listen to cancerslug songs like "In The Dumpster Behind The Clinic", "I Hate Your Kids" or "I Wanna F*ck Your Girlfriend". Endless amazing music in their catalog.
