loved this video. instant sub. I just came off of a video that made me think a lot about media literacy, and buddy I think you got it! I'm a video essay girlie but I'm also very picky - when I clicked I figured that this would be a sort of standard recap (which is fine because there's not a lot of people making content about the show and i'm starving). Holy hell, did you blast past my expectations with your analysis of themes, symbols, structure, and context. I also squealed out loud when you mentioned DHMIS. I've never seen lost but I might just watch it so i can experience your other reviews. thanks again for your work!

Just binge-watched the first season and I remain convinced that they are not employees, but subjects of a mind control experiment. One indicator among many is the way the "company" infantilizes them all the way down to their job descriptions and incentives you'd use to motivate a third-grade classroom, not a team of grown adults doing something important. AI could easily do the "job" they're doing at much lower cost and without having to maintain a Byzantine labyrinth of deception if the "company" were really trying to accomplish some sort of production objective through MDR. They're also obviously in some kind of a cult where the lead figure and his progeny have been mythologized into some type of gods. I don't believe they're putting out a product or service at all. I think they are simply working toward the goal of an entirely compliant, mind-controlled body politic. Regardless of the goal, they're being studied for something.

I loved where innie Mark tosses his tissue without a thought -- even tho he was weeping uncontrollably just minutes before. Tissue means nothing to him. If anyone has read "Hellstrom's Hive" by Frank Herbert (Yes, he wrote more than just "Dune"!) -- this series reminds me of that book, where multiple generations of people have endeavored to live as a hive mind to reap the benefits of strength and productivity that such a culture could produce.

I’ve only recently watched the show and have been obsessed to watch any content related to Severance, your humour, references, editing and abundant knowledge surrounding the themes and ideas makes me want a lot more of your content. Not sure if you will ever post again, maybe a season 2 to bring you back. Sincerely though the video essay space lacks good humour and great analysis which you have in abundance.

Chat GPT response. Season 2 of "Severance" is expected to premiere in late 2024. The show experienced several delays due to the writer's and actor's strikes, but filming resumed and was completed earlier this year. The new season promises to continue the suspenseful and mind-bending narrative that captivated audiences in the first season [❞] .

I think the bomb did go off and the explosion temporarily solved the issue, but the hatch still needed to be built to release the energy buildup. But I think what they did always happened. The part that didn’t make sense to me was Juliet was buried under the hatch and was still alive.

17:05 - these aren’t banal; this is reverse psych, and your calling it banal is proof. Ricken’s book is written for the red-pilled (woke) that is then contraband in the hands of the peasants who then lead a revol…t. Ricken’s piths are gold.

Ricken's book is hacky and awful, and his observations are banal. To us, it sounds like every half-baked self-help book ever. But the ideas we take for granted are brand new to the innies. This is the only non-propaganda book they've ever read. It's profound to them, but it's still supposed to be funny to the audience

ricken's book is indeed gold. altho.. it has some funny shit that irl would make you close the book and feel like you've been tricked into eating shut cake, it has things that many have pondered. as the guy from mad men says: i invented a thing. someone else invented it before but I didn't know and came up w it on my own. Loved this show! While Severance and The Leftovers were super close (and amazing in their own way) they didn't quite scratch that LOST itch for me. But I was pleasantly surprised by the show FROM which to me feels like Lost's true spiritual successor. Highly recommend if you haven't seen it. It even has some of the same people involved including Jack Bender

Nah, you’re so wrong about the ending. It’s a great cliffhanger because we’re left wondering anxiously what will happen to the innies as punishment for using the overtime feature. Also if anything will happen to Milchek. You’re also left wondering what Irving is really up to (yes, we get that he’s investigating Lumin and trying to reach his innie, but to what end exactly? Is he part of the resistance or is he a lone rogue?)
