Wasn't Sting in the books uninscribed? Elrond could read the runes and identify the swords Thorin and Gandalf carried, but not the weapon Bilbo would call Sting. 🤔
@lordofthethings16 күн бұрын
Yes and no, at the time that the swords were read by Elrond, Sting had not been inscribed. Sting wasn't inscribed until after the encounter with the spiders in Mirkwood. Which happened after they met with Elrond.

When Tolkien wrote "The Hobbit", he probably didn't have a clear idea of the history behind Sting. As it is now, Sting's presence in eastern Eriador late in the 3rd age is problematic. Elrond says that Sting and the other swords must have come from a dragon's hoard or goblin plunder-but that others may have "robbed the robbers"- this had to be the case, since the dragon hoards would have been drowned at the end of the 1st age, and it's questionable whether orcs would have even been able to endure having such weapons around. Men must have had the swords for much of time between the fall of Gondolin and Bilbo's adventure.

I think you missed out the most important conflict in which thing was involved. I mean the attack of five of the Nazgûl on Weathertop. Frodo does not just collapse in the presence of the Nazgûl as many do - he at least tries to fight. Sting at least cuts through the Nazgûl’s garments. Who knows what damage such a blade was able to do to the Ringwraith??
@user-uq1jg8id8l11 сағат бұрын
He was not using sting. That was one of the blades where frodo finds in the barrow whites when Tom comes and rescues the hobbits. Basically merry is using one of the blades that he uses to Stab the witch king.

I hate it you never really get a clear look at what the nine rings of men look like in the PJ movies. You can find what they looked like online, but It's just one of them. I guess you could say the same for the Dwarven rings since we only really got to see one of those up close in the Hobbit deleted scene. I wonder if the 9 rings of men all looked the same with different stones, or if they were all the same. The Weta Workshop version of the ring has a red stone. There is also a similar ring in that video game about this guy turning into a ringwraith, but I forget the name of the game.

True, we never get a great look at them. I guess we'll be forever doomed to our personal head-canon on that.

Who's Melkor? An ungrateful, jealous, vain and childishly egocentric god that decided he was way too good to live in world made by others, and so decided to remake It in his own image despite lacking the power, knowledge and a stable mind to do It. He only looked scary or impressive when fighting mortal beings infinitelly bellow his power and status. Honestly, his rise and downfall could be standup material If we could ignore the sheer amount of death and destruction his tantrums provoked. He had no clue of what he was doing, acting mostly based on his selfish ambition and hate of the Elves, using his might as a Valar to compensate any tactical mistakes made on the way. If Sauron was so stupid and reckless the Second Age would have gone smoothly. Actually, without beings like Sauron to lead his forces, I doubt he would have get as far as he did to begin with. Most of his early success was more predicated on the Valar being naive and trusting his as a brother than in his machinations, basically attacking someone who's sleeping, or stabbing a friend in the back. In conclusion, Is my belief that Tolkien purposefully made Melkor this way to mock how genuinely bad people in real life are childish and stupid overall, and why despite that being so clear about them since the start they still are still able to stablish a cult following and SOMEHOW bring civilization to It's knees. Tolkien lived through the times of the Russian Revolution and watched the rise of the Third Reich, which are two real life examples of "Melkors" tantruming themselves into power.
@lordofthethings1Ай бұрын
Wow! Did you have this prepared in advance? Quite the synopsis for a comment! It's a good look at him from a conceptual point of view. I think Tolkien's "pantheon" has many real-world similarities, like you pointed out.
