This is so sweet. Good on ya for bringing a new person into performing poetry. It's so essential we are ambassadors for the art and help provide spaces for young people to have positive early experiences with poetry. Too many people are put off when annotating it over and over in school and they make a block/association that it's boring. It's not boring, it can just be made boring. Think about music! We listen, we dance, we sing along.
@diversespoetry23 күн бұрын
yeah the associations brought on by education are strong! do you find you've been able to help act as that ambassador with your own programming?
@nathanhassallpoetry23 күн бұрын
@@diversespoetryIn many ways, yes. I periodically teach in local schools and just get them reading and writing about themselves and experiences. I'm also blessed to be serving as the Poet Laureate of Malibu, so I host lots of community events (plenty of which are free) and have been growing it out here. Some younger people attend. We also have an end of year poetry event in Malibu called The Summit and we feature some kids from the local school. I'll be (well, my wife will be) posting our full video on my channel soon, maybe in a couple of weeks. Special event.

@@diversespoetry Agree! It's a good focal point for knowhow in a community. It's a fun ride, a lot of work, and a way to connect with a community and foster a poetic sensibility: as I'm sure you experience hosting your open mic events. Where are you based?

Who is this in conversation with? Would like to hear more. There are so many ways you can help promote. One event I featured at (which was paid) also printed off 30 copies of my poem to card and let me sell them at the event (I did it donation-based). I had a few leftover so I wrote my website sign up link on the back of them and gave them to my local bookstore and they gave them to people buying poetry books. That was really cool!

Just found your channel. Fellow poetry KZbin video maker here! Mary Oliver says in her Poetry Handbook that the most improtant line in a stanza is the last line and the second most the first line. I wonder if she thinks the same thing about the poem as a whole. . . P.S. Subbed!

Is $10 really standard in Columbus? In Boston $5 is a lot, people expect free.
@diversespoetry2 ай бұрын
Right? $5/free was very common pre-pandemic. Nowadays, I know more shows doing $15-20 than free-$5, which is part of the reason 1) our show is free and 2) I don't go to as many shows nowadays

Geoff, thank you for your kind attention & consideration. I appreciate it greatly. It is a poem of moments, reflecting on other past moments, & I do often wonder whether I've made that plain enough. The first is of looking at the photo on a funeral card, remembering the moment, bright moment, of its being taken. Not knowing, except in hindsight, how it'll be repurposed. The second is of the scattering of cremated remains, again with the remembrance of an earlier visit to a place, when it first became special. Deep breaths. The third: remembering something said, a comment presaging the death - if I'm not here tomorrow... Moments of irony (if I'm using the right word), their import only known in hindsight. The non-ironic moments (again, if my usage is correct) are those when the last breath leaves, & the body loses its warmth, as the temperature evens out with that of the room, & no awareness left. That's the thought I was aiming at. We don't always know whether the words catch our meaning, holding the connections that seem so obvious to our internal feeling. It's really a great privilege to be read in such detail; I thank you for it, & commend you, & diVerses, for all you do. Best wishes.
