It's not related to the wii but as an answer to the conclusion, there are games like Monkey Island or Rain world where they use Wave files as the tracks themselves, and then enable, disable overlay or play next to the tracks themselves in order to create adaptive music.

I see, so it's kinda similar to the sound engine in the video game FEZ, but on steroids

Even 4 bit ADPCM is indistinguishable from 16 bit PCM - I know this because 4 bit ADPCM is what the PS1 used when streaming audio from the disc that wasn't CD audio.

Great video and very interesting! I am working at House of Elias (previously known as Elias Software) and we are working hard on bringing midi back for video games and make it easy to use with high quality samples. The sampler and instrument libraries can sound really good today, so the possibilities will be endless. :)

Thank you for this, all of these facts and *especially* the 3D all stars bit are just flatly undocumented online. I saw a lot of complaints about 3D All Stars and nobody had ever mentioned how the music just sounded muffled until now, which is kind of impressive. This further goes to show that I think video game sound fidelity is not a particualrly discussed topic. You see a lot of talk about how you need to play old consoles on CRTs to get the right effect, but I have never heard anyone talk about the audio from specific console revisions, game versions, etc. It's maddening. Thanks for making things a little more right in the world.

I know this video is old but if you could do the Sanctuary Theme or Lobby theme from spirit tracks that would be awesome, I can’t find either of them anywhere :((

TIL I can't even hear past 11khz. Cool. I can downsample my entire sound library to 22kHz ("Cassette quality" as it was called in the 90's) and be fine.
