My CFI had me do these in instrument training, which i'm still in, except he would make me do turns, climbs and descents and try to keep it at the standard 500fpm and standard rate turn. That was interesting to say the least.

4-1/2 mi. Final is a cross country. Lol

I was in the air, north of the lake, listening in, as you were departing. it was nuts with all that traffic ! I specifically remember the comments " Cherokee on a four and a half mile final for 01", - "four and a half miles is not final !" - " It is when there's spacing !" I was in and outa there around 10:30, that made 3 landings this year on the ice.. very cool experience.

Great illustration of the spiral. I took one of those "learn to fly" lessons. The pilot let me do some turns and gain elevation. I should ask him about it. Maybe he could do a spiral (eyes open, of course) and me with my eyes closed to see if I can notice any changes.
