Awesome bird! Awesome video! The name 'Woodcock' reminded me of 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'.

I used to think that the bobbing might be an evolutionary thing that mimics the moving of grass and foliage, similar to how leaf insects move like rustling leaves to further camouflage themselves from predators. After seeing the clip of the one standing still until the other bobbed up next to it, though, perhaps it's a social thing. Like a mating dance, but not exclusive to that context. Offspring obviously learn it from their parents, and all the videos of them bobbing seem to feature more than one at a time, particularly in pairs. Maybe they choose mates based on how they bob, whether their rhythms are in tune. Truly a fascinating species. Love these groovy lil dudes.

Theory: They try to disguise themselves and imitate movement of grass shaking in the wind.
