Hi Mate, yeah definitely, still learning the best way to cover speedway. This last time I tried to focus on cars when they were together, but also tried to get the rest of the field in too. I think the next round this weekend I will just focus on the two car battles when they are happening.

I made it to every Can-Am at my home track, Mosport, which is near my home of Toronto. We always stood at the inside entry to corner 2 which was a bit of a legend in the series. Over the years we made it to 6 or 7 other tracks, including twice to Road America - a long 10 hour drive from Toronto. With the lower safety standards for spectators in those days you felt like you could reach out and touch the cars - and you could literally feel the roar of the motors in your feet. I love all kinds of racing but nothing quite honestly approaches the Can-Am of my youthful summers.

My late Mum used to talk about visiting Tracey's Speedway as a teenager in the early 60's. She grew up in the northern suburbs but couldn't recall exactly where the Speedway was located. Your video description answers that question. Thank you.

As a USA-based NASCAR fan and sports writer, I love seeing the NASCAR cars riding so low to the surface. You can paint a car to look like a NASCAR ride but you can't fake aero setups on an old or refurbed chassis! That's why you can often see sparks flying from under the front and back of the cars during night races. The cars are literally skidding across the bumps and keeping downforce.
@Left-Foot-Brake
@Left-Foot-Brake 4 ай бұрын
There literally is no effective lateral downforce load at this track, they are going too slow in all but maybe 2-3 turns.

@@Anth-p5m That's a common misconception, but all four NASCAR Series, Cup, Xfinity, Craftsman Truck, and ARCA Series run multiple road-course/street races every season. A quick check on Google shows NASCAR has been racing on road courses every season since 1949. The newest one has been the downtown Chicago street race which has been exciting but run with both slicks and rain tires the last two years.

Mike Raymond knew his racing and ALL the cars and drivers AND was up on the mechanical side... He loved Sprintcars so did Larry Perkins. These were the years where tail enders drove out dated XYGTHO,s and cars like Bob Janes Monaro,, the HDT repco holden torana,, Bob Janes car 76 Torana and Repco holden engines were $15,000. Ex John Goss Falcons.. etc.. Barry Sharp, and guys like Wilmington had cars that are worth $300,000+ today.

This was probably the only Indy 500 I will see in person. (I won the trip in a raffle. Whee!) The tension and excitement in the stands during the last few laps were palpable. Unfortunately for me, I was sitting at the exit of turn one and didn't witness the crash, but the volume of both cheers and groans around me was amazing when the news came over the PA.

Remember this well and I still maintain it would have been so much better if the coverage actually stuck with the race and not the other halves making a spectacle of themselves in the pits.

No, the use of the sound and pictures from the pit lane added tension and drama. This was an award-winning live television sports production that is still cited in broadcasting classes around the world 35 years later. Frankly, it doesn't get much better.

@@tperk And so was Paul Page being silent for much of the action. They have said it's excessively cinematic. But considering the NFL had Summerall and Madden who style was similar, the viewer gets details and there's an aura that Page set. That's the style of the great US motorsport commentators of the past who came from radio. Page, Squier, and even today's Mike Joy and Adam Alexander understand silence. Just the necessary description. Everyone today wants to follow Crofty's style in F1. But Page is serious after crashes and doesn't sensationalise it, especially since he's seen his fair share of fatal and serious injuries in crashes. Look at some early 2000's NASCAR on Fox where the crew chiefs were split-screen with the action below. The tension of the pit crews is still used -- see the Larson-Buescher Kansas finish in 2024. Clint Bowyer had to say "they're crushed" after the replay changed the result to a Larson finish. The understanding of the crew as a team starts with the leader.

Fittipaldi was a Formula 1 World Champion. Al Jr was a tremendous road racer in various types of cars. Nobody complains about Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses, Flo-Jo, etc. only running on oval tracks. Usain Bolt runs in a straight line for 9.5 seconds and fans swear he's one of the world's greatest athletes.

This was the race that resulted in the ‘war of the mums’, when first Dave Morgan’s mum wrote in to Autosport magazine to defend her son’s driving during the race, and then, in response, Mike Beuttler’s mum wrote in to complain about the implication that her son was “given” second place due to the last corner shunt. Mrs. Beuttler was rather less than impressed with the driving standards on display, calling out - “the boy Hunt [for] being extremely beastly to my son, who, as always, drove beautifully…” She then took game, set, and match with her last sentence: “As for Mr. Morgan, mere words fail me. A pity they didn’t fail his mum…” 😂 The stuff of legends right there!
