Some notes. **Key advices and guidelines on the questioning process itself:** - Know the answers you are looking for and what you are seeking before asking these questions otherwise you won’t know what to do with the answers when you receive them - **Never** settle if you see the answer you receive are things that you have an issue with and you can’t deal with, it is more beneficial for you to be with someone you are compatible with and you don’t have to change - Know what you like, know what you don’t like and stay away from what you don’t like - When you receive the answers to your questions, don’t be hasty in terms of making a decision, take your time and consider the answers, consult with trusted people and pray istikhara - Don’t base decisions on emotions, attraction and hastiness to get marriage due to age for example for women and end up disregarding the answers that they might not like - Beware of the trick of them answering questions in a way that the potential wants, e.g not answering truthfully but to give the potential answers they want - Solution: don’t focus on/talk about on what you are looking for and ‘give it away’ but focus on asking a lot of questions therefore you can see compatibility in an honest way - Sheikh doesn’t recommend emails/messages but rather to ask questions in person for a more authentic response, so it doesn’t give them all the time in the world to curate the ‘perfect response’ **Questions** **The categories are as follows:** **1. Questions that will tell you about someone’s personality** Q: Are you introverted or extroverted? (would they want the same e.g if they are extrovert, they are looking for an extrovert) Q: What are things that annoy you/bother you in terms of other people’s personalities? Q: What makes you happy? (Physical/material or otherwise) Q: What life traumas/experiences have shaped the way you are today? Q: What do you do for fun and for entertainment? Q: What are your friends like? (They will most likely be like them and think future: your kids could be around them) Q: How are you when you are angry? What are some things that help you in the moment? How can your spouse help to uplift your mood? Q: What habits do you have? (Clean, organised/ messy) Q: Tell them about your personality (answering the above etc) and see if they are able to handle that/and feel compatible with that **2. Questions that will tell you about someone’s mentality** Q: mentality in different scenarios, different world events, e.g how would you deal with money issues, calamities, illness (find out if pessimistic/optimistic), (if they’re thinking about khayr that comes after calamities/hardship, or very negative/no patience, not solution oriented, blame oriented) **3. Questions that will tell you about their family dynamic** What type of household did they come from, think do you want your children to be related and tied forever to this family Q: What are your parents relationship like? (together/divorced) Q: How has your parents relationship impacted your childhood? and now? Q: How has your parents relationship impacted your view of marriage? Q: How is his relationship with his sisters? (his view on women and how he treats them)(also ask his sisters how he treats them) **4. Questions that will tell you about someone’s philosophy in raising children** Q: What is his role as a father? What type of parent? Q: What is your view on screentime etc, devices, TV, games for kids? Q: When do you plan on making your daughter wear hijab/ introducing hijab to her? At what age and how would you approach it? Q: How do you plan on raising girls? Q: How do you plan on raising boys? responsibility? Q: How do you differentiate between girls and boys? Q: On toys with music, how would you avoid? Q: On freemixing, what age would you prevent that? **5. Questions that will tell you about someone’s beliefs as it pertains to the religion** Q: Correct aqeedah, dont have fanaticism for speakers, they are willing to listen to advice and open to the truth if they actually listen to speakers that are misguided. them listening to misguided speakers isn’t the issue if they didn’t know but how is their attitudes once informed? Are they a fanatic and refuse to hear the truth? Or are they open to the truth? **6. Scenario specific questions (instead of open ended questions) that will have the other person answer in detail and reveal how they would behave in certain circumstances** Q: How do they act, how would they behave in that scenario? **For brothers specifically:** Q: On feminism, without using the word but on specific aspects/manifestations of feminism, like the woman’s view on careers, what it means to be a mother, a wife etc,. Q: On mehr, type of wedding, extravagance level, a night of disobedience? - with music, tabbaruj, freemixing. Is she more worried about the wedding or the actual marriage? Would you be okay with any of this? Q: What are her views on divorce? What does she thinks causes this? Does she think that the husbands cause this only?? Q: What are her views on obedience to the husband? What does it entail? Is it conditional? Q: What does it mean to her to be free? freedom Q: Does she know what her future husbands rights are? Q: How does she view femininity? On Submissive? Does she believe she can turn it on and off? Or for the right man only? Q: What does she know about the nature of men? How a man thinks? Does she have expectations of a man based on her nature as a women? (differences between male and female psyche) Q: What is the role of material gifts? How often Q: What does she deem the purpose of marriage in islam? Q: What do men want in a women in marriage? Q: On her views on hijrah? Maybe she wants to stay with her family? And is not comfortable moving? **For sisters specifically:** Q: What does he deem the purpose of marriage in islam? Q: What does he think his role is as a husband? his duties towards his wife and kids? (E.g no involvement expect finances? or active role?) Q: What is his idea of a healthy marriage? Ideal marriage Q: On his views on his relationship with his in-laws (your family)? Q: On the rights of his wife? If he knows them? 50-50 or 100% Q: What does he know about the nature of women? How a women thinks? (differences between male and female psyche) Q: On his future plans, family, hijrah, etc, Q: On his career, or is his just in between jobs, plan, etc,. Q: On what he deems as a reason for divorcing a wife? What would warrant divorce (tells you about his tolerance levels)

I watched this entire episode and as a woman this was so eye opening and informative. A few things I knew already and a few other points mentioned it never even crossed my mind. I'm now going to view the other episodes on the marriage topic. As a married woman , a Muslim woman , I should have asked some of these questions before getting married and perhaps I would have saved myself from disappointment and heartache.
