It seems like your spring and fall weather is unpredictable. I would suggest using any chemical type soil PH tester. Everything looks great, but in Latvia while water is mostly on alkaline side soil tends to go acidic. I often add chalk or dolomite flour to water. Then you could nuke your tomatoes with more nitrogen and potassium fertilizer for bigger stronger stems. Also there is almost none elemental sulfur in our soil, so it might be missing for you.
@BalticHomesteaders
@BalticHomesteaders 10 күн бұрын
Weirdly I’ve just done one yesterday and I’m getting alkaline 8. I posted it on our instagram feed as I was surprised and was expecting acidic because it’d the sandy soil. I’m a bit confused. The tomatoes are doing great really considering we only planted them out a couple of weeks ago. I’ve seen some photos on Latvian gardening groups this week and some folk are really struggling. On Saturday I’ll publish the main garden tour and you can see some problems there but mostly caused by pests. I would love to get a proper lab soil test done.

I've seen the burning of poles to help preserve them in the ground several times and I am going to do it with some posts that will form a dead hedge. Everyone it seems these days calls the process by the Japanese term - sho shugi ban (or however it is spelled), but it was not invented by the Japanese, there are the remains of iron age houses in Scotland that show this charring technique was used back then. Personally I refuse to use the Japanese term when we have a perfectly good British word and centuries of history to go with it. The same goes for tsunami, why have people stopped calling it a tidal wave ! Sorry, just a bit of grumpy old man coming out. Or Korotiotio as i was named by the Maoris.
@BalticHomesteaders

The word is in Gaelic? Charring is a generic verb where as the Japanese term has a specific application (to char wood in order to preserve) thus it becoming ubiquitous I assume.

For an efficient cooling I suggest you to put vertical windows facing north at the top of the north roof. The windows would be like just above and at the top of the north roof. In order to have vertical windows the south roof must go higher and over the north roof and the north roof supports the south roof about 3ft under it. This way the top windows have their top fixed to the south roof and the bottom is fixed to the north roof. It is what I did with mine. I know, a drawing would be more explanatory.

Fantastic bean trellis. Very aesthetically pleasing and practical too. I'm quite fond of that triangle garden bed - no idea if it might drive one mad trying to get to the bits in the middle, but it brings the conventionally laid parallel beds and the offset greenhouse together. Is the plan to leave the trellis up over winter, or would you dismantle it? (Not sure what your winters are like, if there's a great deal of winds or damp?) I was beginning to wonder exactly how much cardboard you had on hand before you said you'd run out. You have far more patience than me, cutting them up into nice neat squares.

We had a fair bit saved up. The average size of mid size packaging boxes is about the right size for pathways so I simply cut them down the edges as they are folded and took the rough with the smooth as it were. Trellis hopefully will stay up. The bean one has been there a bit, the tomato one is new as you saw me build it.

Seems very practical. Would you recommend IBC for unattended drip irrigation setup if one uses pump water? Or in that case 100EUR is better invested in setting up standalone operation for the pump?
@BalticHomesteaders
@BalticHomesteaders Ай бұрын
Depends on your water source really? For us it’s redundancy so we can store 1000 litres to run off but we can top it up with a lake pump as needed. If we were solely reliant on rainwater (we do pump some rainwater) then we might have 2 tanks. If you have an unlimited water supply then no need for a tank just a pump if the water supply isn’t under pressure. Obviously our tank gravity feeds one greenhouse that’s downhill no problem.
@jackdaniel2623
@jackdaniel2623 Ай бұрын
@@BalticHomesteaders While cold, the pump is unlimited groundwater tap. Main concern is safety and reliability when leaving it unattended for days. Electrics, timers, pressure regulators etc. IBC would provide steady, limited flow, warmed water for greenhouse, but takes quite some space in small garden and is still a limited source if pump goes out. Not sure if worth the price and space. How long could you approximately water a greenhouse with full tank?
@BalticHomesteaders
@BalticHomesteaders Ай бұрын
Well it’s always good to have a plan b especially with water. How much water you’ll need depends on so many variables such as how big the greenhouse is, what kind of drip tape you use, the head pressure etc

@@BalticHomesteaders thanks! I am really obsessed with passive solar greenhouses and as far as I have seen yours is the smartest one. Mainly because it doesn't cost as much as a house and is not noisy as the ones with geo thermal batteries. This project is approaching enough "complexity" that it would benefit from a design review. Showing your designs and code to other people will help catch issues before they happen. For example, the polarity switching module you want is called an "H Bridge". You've effectively recreated one using individual relays, but a dedicated H bridge module is not that expensive and includes additional safety features to prevent the issues you ran into with your compounded relays.

Thanks for this yes perhaps I should. Funny thing is if you’d seen other vids you’ll see I go into detail designing stuff in cad but for some reason with this I just jumped in calling on experience from some 30 years + ago.
