I earned my MPH in 2008 while working at the Florida Department of Health in Southwood. I was an older "Generation X" guy who already had an MS in Biomedical Engineering. I worked at the FL DOH from 2002-2011. The MPH was very useful in understanding the overall healthcare system, CMS (Medicare & Medicaid regulations), and applied epidemiology with biostatistics. The courses were rigorous and time consuming while working full-time. Back then, FSU had courses in the late afternoon and evenings which really helped. For my capstone project, I studied Agent Orange and GIS with exposure patterns to soldiers and civilians during the Vietnam War. I gave a presentation to the class for environmental health on Agent Orange. The young "millenials" of 2007 had been born long after the war ended. So, many seemed appalled by the aftermath of Agent Orange. I recall showing a slide on the anti-war protests of the time (Pentagon in 1967). Now, in 2024, there are protests again on many campuses nationwide (albeit much smaller in scale compared to the 1960s but far more exposed due to social media which didn't exist in 1967). As for Agent Orange, the dioxin blamed for illnesses was found again in burn pits of Iraq and Afghanistan for the Post-911 generation of Veterans. Those burn pits are their modern "Agent Orange" with claims piling up on a massive scale in the VA system. War is hell. I thank Dr. Weissert for his excellent teaching. I thank Drs. Jason and Lisa Jordan for their guidance on the capstone. I also studied the Italian Healthcare System with Dr. Jason Jordan's course. As for me, I now have six master's degrees and am working on a PhD at Arizona State in Artificial Intelligence. I am from a rural Apache reservation in AZ. I am an avid lifelong learner - lol. I thought I was already old in 2007 among young graduate students and undergraduates of the time. Now, even the latter are middle aged as I am now in my 50s. But I still am doing ok in graduate schools. I also work at Medtronic remotely as a software test architect. My other master's degrees in Florida were MS in Software Engineering (UWF in 2016) and MS in Mechanical Engineering (UF in 2013). I miss Florida. I miss playing intramural basketball at the Leach. I met my FSU girlfriend over there too back then. Best wishes to the FSU MPH program.
