Difference between violin/fiddle are you referencing? Though some fiddler's DO use steel strings (to be able to better compete with banjos I'm told), it is only a player's preference. There is no real difference between violin and fiddle. Even my pro-symphony Classical teacher affectionately called his Guaneri his "fiddle".... it is just slang.

Do these principles still apply if you play the viola?

Absolutely! Any bowed strings instrument! :)

A bluegrass player may play it the same way in competition but we all take bluegrass breaks when we jam and its improvised.

I had a cochlear implant to make me hear again. The first setting was sensitive to certain sounds like a kitchen blender and the sound level would drop dramatically for 10 seconds or until the blender stopped ---then count to ten .Many noises would "switch off the implant. xxxxxxOne was a violin being played.xxxxx Some part of the violin sound will switch off the sound. At the same time a classical guitar can be heard easily and a normal piano with strings can be heard. So the xxxxxx Bow Rustle xxxx must be what turns off the sound. A sound of pine wood being sawn with a fine saw will turn off the implant even though the sound is very quiet. It does not depend on volume. A nice piece of science for us all to appreciate . My second cochlear adjustment reduces that sensitivity enough for my ears to listen to a Live Violin. A Recorded Violin sound or a laptop sound is not a problem .Not perfect but lately ,after 6 months use my ears are learning the sounds afresh and this week I can detect the "woody tone" in Leonid Kogan`s violin sound . Most of my audiologists have not realised these strange facts which can be very obscure if you have no familiarity with violins. One useful fact is that the lower 2 strings are still loud enough to avoid the blanking out action of the implant. The A string and E string were impossible to play after about one second---then wait ten seconds for the hearing to work again. Now on the 2nd adjustment they are still difficult .Time will gradually improve that ,hopefully..xxxxxx But xxxx Yesterday I read about Octave Violin Strings which play all the violin notes one octave lower. That is part of my new escape plan. All the time after the fitting I had no trouble with pitch or tuning .This is a major obstacle for many players after cochlear implants . I was just lucky . Please educate the public about these strange facts . Players who go deaf can still enjoy music without learning a different instrument. My hearing dropped dramatically over a few months so I had no problem remembering sounds . Bach Cello Suites were always part of my practice routines.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I would bet that they programmed an anti-feedback cancelling feature into your implant software. It seems like it might the same thing that zoom online conferencing software has. If I give a violin lesson online using zoom, as soon as the student starts playing it cuts the sound off (thinking it is feedback), BUT if we click on the "original sound for musicians" button (only on the desktop version I think), it works much better. I wonder if audiologists can program a feature in your implant like that?

I'm trying to use this with a tailpiece that uses fine tuners, and it will not fit under the tailpiece as far in as you show, due to the fine tuner mechanism under the tailpiece.

Cave men would have done it from the start. We get all messed-up in the belief in the object, rather than belief in ourselves to transcend the immediate limitations sensibly. Years of suffering do not succeed. The little screw was not the key to success, it was the "discovered" flexibility of the mind in these 20th and 21st centuries, for people who made the bold jump. I like the story by the guy who was trapped upside-down by his seat-belt in a burning car, both shoulders broken, and he resorted to pushing the belt into the fire so it burned through. He did not totally withdraw from the fire, he readily harnessed it to solve his immediate need. Right there in front of his own eyes. Did it.

Viola’s need this sort of thing even more! You might be able to see in the f holes to the corner if you point a light at the right angle. Good luck!

really interesting fiddle with some equivalent to pick-up switching..something I've always wanted for a violin. The spacing on the 5 string is definitely to my liking - cramming 5 into the space of 4 is not so workable, so good move in my view. congratulations!

Thanks. I’ve played the 5 on a 4 string neck for years, but I didn’t mind this. Mostly I’m pleased with the tone. These are the instruments I wish I had 30 years ago. Interested in one?

Hi! Thanks for asking! Ya know… I just looked back on that video from 10 years ago (yikes! Where has the time gone?), and noticed that I never did add more to that lesson. You are the first to ask that I know of, but I will put it on the edit list and announce something soon. You’d have to be an All Access Pass member to view this kind of info. Thanks again. Fitz

Thanks for your comment. There are 100 videos in this series I did back at the beginning of the COVID lockdown. Knowing what being a gigging musician is actually like, positive and/or negative, ESPECIALLY in the Jazz idiom, is important information for those who have not yet experienced these things. I WISH someone had told me about where they might have mis-stepped in their career, so that I might have been better able to avoid those same things! I sincerely hope for you a glorious and fruitful career with zero professional mis-steps!
