Runner not ejected because he tried to "slide" head first into home? Clearly catcher blocking plate without ball so runner should be safe. Seems like the runner kind of trucked the catcher though and could have been ejected. Tough call for the umpire. Catcher is going to get himself killed if he keeps blocking the plate without the ball.

FYI if you don’t want to get ran over or have the guy coming to the plate be safe, don’t block the plate.

This should be a reference video in the NFHS officials' video training library on malicious contact superseding obstruction. Umpires not properly recognizing OBS and CALLING it is why this still happens. There is no place for this. In any level of baseball.

The catcher did not have possession of the ball and was not in an attempt to apply the tag. Blocking....Had the catcher been attempting to apply the tag, basepath would have been established, then the runner would have been at fault. Runner is safe in this case.

This is a most interesting case. After watching the video, reading the comments and watching the video again, I have to agree with the call. The home plate umpire could have been in a better position to make the call. The video clearly shows that the runner was in the act of making a head first side, but was impeded by the catcher before he could complete the slide. The base umpire should have been consulted to verify the slide attempt. If the runner stayed in an upright position or 'hit' position, then the runner is out and ejected not just this game but also the next game.

All of these situations can be solved in one question: “Where the HELL am I supposed to go, then?” Does a catcher really expect a runner to stop what they’re doing to NOT hit them? Surely you can’t be that daft and make it into some level of play. I knew at age 6 that you run until you hit home plate.

The official ruling would be ... obstruction on the catcher for receiving the ball while his left leg is in foul territory... this obstruction will allow the run to score. The runner would be ejected for malicious contact for lowering his shoulder into the catcher..... this is clean in MLB

Trucking the catcher is illegal in high school and in college. I think this player got away with it because he was intending to slide and was in the motion of sliding, he didn't get into the slide because the catcher was in the way.

@@TWolfyG Doesn't matter. The catcher may be guilty of obstruction but that does not give him the right to violate the rule that says a runner must slide or attempt to avoid contact. Leading with the upper part of his body would be malicious. Malicious contact supersedes obstruction. If the runner had pulled up or veered to avoid the catcher, the obstruction should have been called. The NCAA book also makes any contact above the catcher's waist is illegal. This is not my opinion, it is what the rule book says.

@@TWolfyG Giving himself up or retreating are options, or he can slide legally or try to go around the catcher. What he cannot do is plow through the catcher.

Man I grew up in the era when, as the catcher, you block home plate, ball or no ball. You are gonna get trucked. You make the base runner earn the run. If you get the ball, take the hit, hold on to it, you save a run. I understand player safety, but if you ask most catcher they would take the hit every damn time to save their team a run. It’s a different mentality.
