Thank you for addressing this. I have wondered if my neutered female cat 🐈 is having bladder inflammation or interstitial cystitis due to the fact that she lost her hormones. She is literally peeing blood for a year and the vet and I are stumped. No infection, culture negative, tried various antibiotics, bladder relaxers... nothing works. Tried special diets. I have recently thought about restoring her hormones after learning that Menopause is a naturally inflammatory state. The only other advice was Andrew Jones DVM from British Columbia mentioned using DMSO topically on outside of bladder. Of course it smells strongly of sulfur which has been my hesitation.

I am going to let my one dog listen to this video with me. He screamed so loud in the grooming area of the vets that staff came running in. He then lifted his leg and peed on the groomer and jumped down off the table, groomer told me to take him back to whoever did them before. (That was me). I hate the conflict with him. 16 lbs and he rules. I have 5 other dogs with no drama. One treat for each toe. They are so busy chewing they dont even realize they are getting a mani-pedi. They consider it a fair trade, my pinscher prefers the dremel. With the dremel, try it on your own nail and you will appreciate how fast it heats up your nail bed and finger. You need to do touch and go, NEVER GRIND with a dremel. Touch and go only. Do it on yourself

Those in human medicine should be listening carefully to this. Giving wrong sex hormone/spaying & neutering humans for “transition” are potentially causing catastrophic problems for their patients.

That’s why “the science” always has to be questioned ! That’s how science improves ! (it’s the people/procedural protocols set up for profit that don’t want that questioning). This information makes me sad for the pets I’ve had that I have spayed/neutered but it’s great to have the information. :( hopefully hormone-saving sterilization will become the norm… it’s at least better. Even women who’ve had hysterectomies often have the ovaries removed simply because the surgery is “easier.” Now, women are being informed to ask the doctor to do the surgery that leaves the ovaries because it’s better for their overall health.

Working in rescue is all about harm reduction! Wishful thinking to think there are all these responsible, loving owners who will make sure their animal isn't adding to the population of unwanted animals. The reality is people are not responsible and when the animals get to us (because they are surrendered or more likely, dumped somewhere...), they are pregnant, sick, and now we have a whole family to try to get well which means foster homes and if you can't find a foster, they have to euthanize because you can't have vulnerable babies, unvaccinated, spreading disease in the shelter. Most people don't go find their animal from a reputable breeder who only picked healthy parents and took amazing care of the babies. There are consequences to all surgery and procedures and medications too. This surgery is about saving lives and reducing suffering through prevention of birth of unwanted babies with no county services and resources. If the trade off is reduced suffering than what happens when you let animals do their thing, I will take the surgery. Please go try experiencing what it feels like to hold kittens and puppies in your arms while they die a slow painful death due to preventable diseases or try calling your local shelter to ask if they have room to take in ANYONE. Try browsing Craigslist and Nextdoor and see all the found babies who have been dumped along a road or on a strangers property. Try looking for someone who is able to devote a big chunk of their lives to foster animals they can't keep. The people willing (like me) are totally fucking full and the cries out for help fall on deaf ears. The reality IS death and often a brutal one and a very young one. They won't get the opportunity to have any sort of a happy life. You can also find "experts" point to correlation to these diseases we see commonly to vaccines or to diet. Rescues know people will NOT be responsible with birth control for their pets and they will cause so many "oops" babies which they are then not capable of paying for their care. So, yeah. They dump the babies. Every day!! Stop with this BS of responsible owners. Vets recommend the surgery because we see what happened before it was common. And the state of rescue right now is nightmare fuel. People are worried about their own financial situation right now and don't know what is next. They aren't adopting, they aren't being responsible with the babies they let be conceived, they are selfish and are part of the problem. As are "experts" who put shit like this out and to read the comments from all these, well meaning, loving pet parents, but most are very clearly ignorant and can be talked into anything. Stop adding to the problem, feed your pet a food that is actually healthy, not a bag of kibble, learn how to read their body condition score, feed them an appropriate amount and exercise them, keep them lean and active and you will avoid the majority of these things. Is there an effect on their body? Yes? Is it worth it to reduce systemic suffering and early death in unwanted animals? As the person taking in those unwanted animals and working my ass off to try to save them because someone was irresponsible and let this happen and dumped them and now me and too small of a number of people who are stepping up to help. We say yes. The trade off is worth it. They have the CHANCE to live a long happy life.

As a retired Lic Vet tech,in the US…I had alternate views from veterinary practices…I always said : YES neuter but wait till the animal grows up at least one heat for females (In my defense it was the realization that MOST people do not train/socialization, especially in the US)…andI have to confess I thought it would help with behavior issues. I also try to say to anyone who will listen and has a pup; if you would do puppy classes for the first 1year of a pups life you will not regret it for the next 13+ years of your dog’s life. One of my other rants is that AKC has done very little to help dogs (akc seems to be just a beauty pageant).

I adopted my yellow lab after fostering him at the young age of eight weeks. I waited until he was 18 months old to have him neutered. I just put him down this past April at the age of 16. He had some arthritis towards the end but what really was problematic for him was vertigo three years ago, a.k.a. idiopathic vestibular syndrome. I truly believe that not neutering him and a raw food diet is why he lived so long; I also did not do any vaccines including rabies. I have two new dogs from Shelter one was neutered at around 1 yr old and the other was neutered at two years old so I'm hoping they at least had enough time to develop.

Progestin and progesterone effects differ in humans with estrogen replacement. Could this be similar in dogs? Progesterone is breast protective while progestin (medroxyprogesterone) increases incidence of breast cancers in humans. 1:10:47

I don't spay/neuter unless there is a health reason. I refuse to get major surgery for a perfectly healthy animal. It just see,s so wrong and my intuition has always told me not to do it. I had to spay my black lab because she got mammary gland cancer at 8. She lived 8 years after having cancer. She died of dementia at 16. The issue is that animal shelters require you to either get them fixed under penalty of law, or the animals are already fixed before you get them. This means the only dog I can have is purebred or a dog that is given away by an individual, which is hard to find. Btw, I can't stand the way veterinarians harass me to spay/neuter. They act like I'm a criminal for refusing it. I have never once had a dog that got impregnated or impregnated any other dog. It is not that hard to prevent it.

This is great for people make sure their unspayed/unneutered pets NEVER get out. The majority of people are incapable of making this happen and then have no qualms about dropping off a litter of mixed-breed puppies at the local human society. This propaganda is irresponsible.

I have 5 pets all neuter or spayed. No problems with their diet, health and behaviour. How many of all these illnesses you mention can be based on other factors like vaccination, drugs or pure diet? As a person who volunteers in shelters for more than 20 years I don't want to produce more unwanted animals. Also by spaying your pets you have space to adapt more animals. The methods you mention aren't available easily and in the beginning they will be more expensive. We need years for these practices.

But,for the real problem of overpopulation and suffering its neceser and also should be mandatory to spay and neuter, in shelters just becouse there are many they are been killed, so its an injustice to allow puppy mills ,to buy, it must be mandatory to spay and neuter to end ethicly with overpopulation

I would simply like to comment as someone who has had several dogs that were spayed or neutered after age 6 I have seen drastic changes that have led me to believe at this point that I personally will not do this again unless health dictates. Also as someone who works in the veterinary field I am sorely disappointed in the lack of interest seen for alternative sterilization methods.

2 months ago i adopted a dog. she had to get spayed according to the law. she has some type of shyness - may be natural, may be it was made worse by human influence. so now my job is so much harder to get her to be a pup again since she produces less oxytocin or other hormones so i get so much less motivation. she would have always been under my watch - meaning she would not have puppies. i've kept dogs from probably a puppy mill that never reproduced. this is not how any animal should grow. at least a human can opt for it.

Every single time I have taken my 22 month old Biewer Terrier to the vet's office, I get the same lecture about neutering my dog. My thinking was that I didn't want to subject him to surgery and I also didn't want to upset his hormones in ways that could not be anticipated. Plus he is a precious little 6-pounder who is never off leash when outside the house.

She was damaged , never been the same , developed hypothyroidism and other issues with skin and metabolism, depression, skin issues, itching etc. It's disgraceful they dont listen and shut us down like we don't know anything. This is my only dog i had spayed at 4yrs after one litter. Never again. We have enough documentation on humans with the same problems. Im in Australia.

This video discusses the topic of hormone sparing sterilization and hormone replacement therapy for dogs. Dr. Karen Becker and Rodney Habib are guests on the show and discuss their experiences and research on the topic. Key Points: * Dr. Becker discusses her experience as a veterinarian and how she came to realize the negative effects of early spaying and neutering on dogs' health. * She mentions that she started spaying and neutering all of her patients early on in her career, but later realized that it was causing health problems such as obesity, muscle loss, and various endocrine issues. * Dr. Becker and Rodney Habib discuss the importance of hormone replacement therapy for dogs after spaying or neutering. * They also discuss the benefits of hormone sparing sterilization, which is a procedure that allows dogs to retain their reproductive organs but prevents them from reproducing. * The video ends with a discussion of the importance of educating pet owners about the risks and benefits of spaying and neutering, as well as the importance of hormone replacement therapy. Additional Information: * The video includes a discussion of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association's new guidelines on neutering, which recommend that dogs be left intact unless there is a medical necessity to intervene. * Dr. Becker and Rodney Habib discuss the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need to educate pet owners about the risks and benefits of spaying and neutering. * The video also includes a discussion of the importance of hormone replacement therapy for dogs after spaying or neutering. * Dr. Becker and Rodney Habib discuss the benefits of hormone sparing sterilization, which is a procedure that allows dogs to retain their reproductive organs but prevents them from reproducing. * The video ends with a call to action for pet owners to educate themselves about the risks and benefits of spaying and neutering, and to talk to their veterinarians about hormone replacement therapy.

I have a 6 yr old Great Dane female who was intact until this year. It was a constant struggle with Veterinary care. We moved a few times and ever single vet tried guilting us, and at times even getting pretty upset at us for being irresponsible for not spaying her. It was terrible to get her care without that issue coming up. This year we finally had her spayed because they said she will get pyometra if we do not. So we did it. A month out of it now and her skin has gone totally bonkers bad. So now they want to put her on apequel or cytopoint-immunosuppressants which I will not do at this point. When I asked if this could be because her hormones are messed up I got a look like are you crazy and they would not even begin to entertain the idea. So now I have to find a vet (mine wont) who will test her hormones and treat that. It is crazy.

My dog is 11,has anal hernia and enlarged prostate. We are battling for year now. And are homeless. Today I have to take him to a vet and decide on neutering and removing anal sac which I was avoiding all along. We tried all available in our country,we are not in USA,and I dont know what to do as we have to move to a place without even human doctor and pharmacy let alone vet. I was always against it and he already has colitis and gastritis and if we go there we have nobody to take us back to town. It is my decision and I don't know what to decide as I will carry that burden if I survive all this😢😢😢 He is happy, running, barking, doesn't seem sick at all and has at least 3 more issues. Do not judge please as we live in 3rd world country and our vets are not like yours and we are alone, just the two of us. Thank you fnjr anyone replying to this comment 🙏🐾

I had a rough collie male that was neutered at 2,5 years old. He got increasingly scared of gunshots, fireworks and thunderstorms over the 10 years he lived. To a point where he peed himself and ran in panic to hide. Also his coat changed to a horrible struggle with exploding, matted undercoat and constant, massive shredding. Since then I only neutered my dogs if it is necessary for medical reasons. I have a poodle female now and she gets false pregnancies, but I hope to find another way to help her ❤
