In the mid 90s, when I was in middle school, I went to SeaBase every year for spring break. We stayed in those dorms as well. It was a lot of fun. Back then they would run Dusky 27 footers out to Alligator reef if I remember correctly.

How many days are enough to spend in Zion NP? We have 2 kids- 3yrs & 5yrs old

At least 2 days. You can see and do a lot in a couple days and Bryce Canyon is not a far drive to see more. Have fun!

For the Half Dome day lottery, if one person is successful can they take up to 6 people with them for the hike? Is that how you guys were able to do the hike that day even though one of you did not get a permit?
@DrBackpackerandKids
@DrBackpackerandKids 5 ай бұрын
Each lottery entry designates the number of hikers included in that party so that each individual hiker will have a permit for that day. Six people could individually enter different days and each include 6 hikers in their lottery entry. Having a larger party lowers the chances of getting selected because you have six permits at stake for that specific day compared to a single hiker, but spreading your chances across more days with each individual of the group entering the lottery at least increases that at least one day will land a winner for the group.

What time of year is best for visit and days to avoid croeds
@DrBackpackerandKids
@DrBackpackerandKids Жыл бұрын
We went in April, which was beautiful but can be cool some years. Best times to visit are late spring and early fall. From April to May and September to October, the weather is good, crowds are fewer, and hiking conditions are great.

125 years since "horseless carriages" were banned on Mackinac Island! No concerns watching for cars :) The Crown Jewel of the Great Lakes has been without cars since July 6, 1898, 125 years to the day.

This was during early Spring 2021. It's beautiful any part of the year, but it was a little cold in the water for the Narrows. This year was unseasonably cool for early April. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Hi! Do you know if the gear for the kids is one-size-fits-all from Zion Outfitters? I see on their website that it says fits 8 plus but we have a 5 and 7 year old. Do you think it'll be okay for them as well? And are you able to catch the shuttle into the park directly from Zion Outfitters? Thanks!
@DrBackpackerandKids

Yes, our youngest was 9 when we did the Narrows and the equipment was in good condition and fit fine for him. Zion Outfitters can help you find the right size for your kids.

We went in early April. The Narrows were still pretty chilly in early April. It depends on the goals of your trip, it will certainly be pretty in January but also much cooler.

Can you explain what the tree line is?
@DrBackpackerandKids
@DrBackpackerandKids 3 жыл бұрын
The tree line is the edge in elevation or latitude at which trees are no longer capable of growing. It's dependent upon the mountain range and the conditions of that location. In this area of CO, it's usually around 11,500-12,000 ft. Beautiful place!

Other interesting owl facts: The barred owl has distinctive black eyes, as noted in the video, and the screech owl has two color phases, gray and rufous (brown). The rufous phase has a higher metabolic rate. Screech owls are sometimes referred to as "horned owls" and mistaken as juvenile great horned owls due to their feather tufts that resemble horns. #barredowls #greathornedowl, #screechowl, #owlfacts #owls
