I heard this quintet numerous times in Boston at the Jazz Workshop when I was a student at NEC. It was so powerful live in that club.

We're blessed that this remarkable performance was captured for posterity. One of the truly great examples of this supremely gifted individual in a perfect flow state, live, one take. Stunning!

The tail end of the greatest era in music. Remnants of the 50's and 60's, fading into the twighlight. Then came computers and cell phones, and the world as we knew it, ended..

Was watching "Collateral" and heard Tom Cruises character Vincent mention this man Dexter Morgan as a west coast jazz great who played a jazz club in Lamerk Park.

No real comparison, but right before Mangione got big, I wandered into a cellar club in Houston and there he was Chuck Mangione killing it.

READ THIS WHOLE THING: PRAY FOR ISRAEL. PRAY FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM. THE LORD JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR YOUR SINS AND ROSE AGAIN FROM THE DEAD. WOULD YOU LIKE TO TAKE YOUR PLACE IN HIS HOUSEHOLD? THEN PLEASE REPENT OF ALL YOUR SINS TODAY AND SURRENDER YOUR ENTIRE LIFE TO THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. NOBODY IS OUT OF THE CANDIDACY FOR BECOMING A CHRISTIAN.

This is the first tune I learned to read music with, circa 1981. I first learned it on piano from a Fake Book. Decades later, I have learned to play it on harmonicas, on both diatonic and chromatic harps. My unrequited love number one, Joni Mitchell, wrote lovely lyrics for this tune. This is the ultimate "moody ballad". I practice it every day, always making new solos. I'm amused that some think this a difficult tune to play.

This is a slightly different version of this tune than most play today. But if anyone has the right to change it, well Mingus wrote it, so he can do whatever the hell he wants.
