So the heat from the welder doesn’t disrupt or effect the Pearl even when it gets black like that? Is this true for all stones you might be welding near? Also, very pretty earrings!
@stonesandfindings
@stonesandfindings 5 күн бұрын
The smoke/soot is burnt oxygen and oils from the fingers or dust on the item. You can minimize (although not completely avoid) this by using argon gas. So far, I have not experienced any changes in any of the stones I've used - and I've weld against many stones and glass. I've not yet tried plastic, resin or amber (which is a type of resin, I guess). Plastics theoretically should be much more heat sensitive. I've even weld opal, which is very fragile and I've had no effect on the stone.

I started this business and am having a horrible time finding events to actually be in. It’s so bad at least where I live in the Bay Area. There’s nothing at this point that I can go to. I will try to reach out to businesses to do pop ups but as far as fairs, they’re impossible
@stonesandfindings
@stonesandfindings 7 күн бұрын
Absolutely, you should create your own opportunities for pop-ups. Even boutique coffee shops! Do weekend events - buy 10 to 20 coupons for coffee and give them out free with each welded bracelet. Make sure everyone wins, including the host business. It makes their day more fun and draw people in. Good luck!

Thanks for this note. All laser cutting will produce gas and dust - laser should come with a vacuum to filter out dust particles and smoke. The place should be well ventilated, regardless of metal/material one is trying to cut.

Can you show knots on 4 and 6 mm beads. thanks
@stonesandfindings
@stonesandfindings 18 күн бұрын
knots would be the same. FOr the 4mm beads, the hole is too small for the knot to slip back into of the of the beads. So, you would have to use a crimp cover, or focal bead with larger hole, if you want to hide it. A lot of people just leave it exposed, though. It doesn't matter too much.

No, it is not expensive considering that it is made in the USA and is the only one with CSA approval for safety so you can get insurance if you are using it for permanent jewelry on people. @stonesandfindings
@stonesandfindings 18 күн бұрын
That's because it is super easy with the zapper. If you don't have a zapper, you can still use a ball pin and wire wrap. It's trickier to get it tight, and you see the wrapping (but that's also the beauty of wrapping). here's a comparison chart with different models of the micro welders I've been using, if you are curious: stonesandfindings.com/free-resources-page-pj-jewelry-making-information/micro-welder-comparison-chart/

Hi, does the heat from the welder not damage the gemstones at all? Are there any stones that you can't weld with?
@stonesandfindings
@stonesandfindings 21 күн бұрын
The heat is unlike that of a flame and is highly focused. I have weld on many different gemstones and have not had any problems and have not noticed any changes in any of them. Recently I even weld a resin piece and it didn't damage/melt or change the resin at all. I can't tell you if there is something out there that would be damaged because I have not exhausted all stones, but so far, the hundred or so I've tried, it has not damaged the stone/pearl/crystal.

Hi, Can you tell me how to detach the welded jump ring from earring?
@stonesandfindings
@stonesandfindings 21 күн бұрын
I would cut it off using flush cutters at the weld. You then trim the other surface by flipping the cutters. THen you have flat ends on both sides and can re-weld.

Quick question. If you use Argon will you still get the little divot in the metal as when you don’t? I’m actually referencing the bangle video you made earlier. I’m a silversmith and am fairly comfortable soldering but would like to be able to closed fine jump rings in fiddly places as well as tack some bits for eventual soldering. Would one of these welders do the trick? Thank you for all your videos and expertise.
@stonesandfindings
@stonesandfindings Ай бұрын
If you use argon, and still get the little divot, then it means your power is too high. Once you reduce the power, it doesn't "melt" or "flat top" as much. The argon helps cool the metal quickly, so if it is divotting then it is too high. You can tweak the power until it is smooth but secure. Yes, I am a silversmith and can use flame and flux soldering, but for jump rings and chain links, arc pulse micro welding is amazing! Nothing compares and it has HUGE advantage over flame soldering.

Steel is a ferrous metal (it has iron in it). Stainless has nickel in it. Both are magnetic. You will find utensils to be made with stainless steel. Take a magnet to it and you'll find out for sure.

Solid gold is better than Gold filled (welding leaves a spot of black where the core is exposed from the welding process) Gold filled is better than gold plated which will tarnish and is not suggested for permanent jewelry. Here are free Product Knowledge posts that give you a break down of definition and manufacturing process, and pros and cons of each: stonesandfindings.com/free-resources-page-pj-jewelry-making-information/

Thank you for this tutorial. I have purchased a dainty, handmade beaded necklace on Etsy. The beads are 1.2 to 2mm. Would the artist have used this technique, you reckon? In my mind I can't imagine how minuscule loops are made by hand. Way smaller than the ones shown here. And so even and perfect! Do machines that create 1mm loops exist?
@stonesandfindings
@stonesandfindings Ай бұрын
Machines can create 1mm loops, but welding them closed is difficult. You would be surprised at how small and perfectly wrapped you can make them by hand - with lots of practice of course. Most dainty wire wrapped looking pieces are actually made by hand - usually in India and Thailand.

Hi Deena - you don't need a very special magnet. Save yourself the trouble. Just get a fridge magnet. If it is strong enough to lift a paperclip or nail easily, it will suffice.

Thank you for a great video. I am tending towards not purchasing the argon to start off however all the examples and videos show silver/gold filled jewelry. What about stainless steel? Still ok to solder without argon? Thank you very much for your answer!
@stonesandfindings
@stonesandfindings Ай бұрын
The same goes for stainless steel. It is not the metal that makes the difference, rather it is the thickness. Industrial welding for bicycles or I-beams MUST have argon for the strength and integrity. However, for permanent jewelry sized jump rings, it is so small that you don't notice the difference by much. When I weld bangles and stud posts (20 ga and thicker), I do notice the difference in the smoothness (less pitting and smoother because it cools faster.
