Excellent analysis. Great examination of symbolism. I too understood the reference Lazarus who returns from the deas also the reference to the wolf and Rome. It's a great movie on many levels.

Great relationship drama. Nice that there is one review of it on KZbin. Even if the review is mostly a girl sleeping in front of the camera.

Согласна. Совершенно не интересный, как и два предыдущих эротичнских фильма Анны Марии Тато.

I enjoyed your review of "Mystery of the Wax Museum", and I love your enthusiasm for Pre-Code and Classic Hollywood films. -- You should DEFINITELY pick up the recently restored Blu-ray of this film, which was released in 2020. It looks and sounds SO MUCH BETTER than all previous editions, and I'm certain that your enjoyment would be greatly enhanced.

I'm glad you liked this movie. I LOVED it despite its flaws. Very interesting, and very original. Definitely check out the Tuesday Weld version. It's really good to.

Saw this once on broadcast tv and never forgot it. Spent years looking for it until looked up the vichyssoise scene and found the nyt review online. Somehow had the idea that it was a gritty 70s tv afternoon special.

The Halliday brand is a lot like a king Vidor movie called duel in the Sun. You can compare ward bond with the landowner in duel in the sun. He hates the girl that he’s been compelled to adopt because she’s Spanish

Such a good movie. There was an American censorship board that did not allow criticism of the occupation in movies at the time. In reference to 3:15.

this movie is pretty excellent except it's got about 10 minutes of fat to be trimmed in all the circus misadventure and lion on the ledge stuff, just goes on way too long in 2nd half ... trim it from 90 to 80 minutes and it would stand-up fairly well right next to sturges' more famous movies

I love this movie, too. But you said it ended Karloff and Lugosi's careers? No, not at all. It made the studios more cautious perhaps. Universal didn't hesitate to pair Karloff and Lugosi again in The Invisible Ray, although it was more science fiction than horror. But Son of Frankenstein happened in 1939 with the duo once again together. Bela's Ygor, in fact, is one of his best roles. Boris only agreed to do the film if the Monster did not speak. Both of their careers did go on long after The Raven. Unfortunately Bela was treated badly by Hollywood and didn't get the same opportunities. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Sadly you happen to know very little about the "behind the scenes" of the "Scientific cardplayer"- Joseph Cotten and Bette Davis knew perfectly that they were going to work for an italian production. Joseph was a dear friend of the director Comencini and loved his works, while Bette was introduced to this project with the help of her dear friend Anna Magnani, another big italian actress who also won an academy award in the 50es. It was not a matter of money, bette in particular was very happy to be given a scripts that she could only dream in the United States where her career was over. Alberto Sordi used to respect Bette a lot, though his way of working enraged her. She did not accept that Alberto changed the lines while acting on stage and the fact that he didn't feel at ease speaking in english, enraged her even more to the point that she renamed him "Alberto Sordid". I wouldn't call this film weird. Italian cinema of those days was often cynical full of sarcasm, rage and feelings of revenge and emancipation. It is a bit shallow to say that this specific portrait is about italy as if the dichotomy richness & poorness was not a global issue yesterday like today. Italian simply conceived cinema like a work of art, not different from books and theatre performances. You can watch Alberto and silvana Mangano work together in the italian masterpiece "A Difficult Life (Una vita difficile)" by the director Dino Risi (1961). This was a real masterpiece that is still powerful. PS: the italian comedy of the 60 and 70es is very well known by the great american directors of that era. Still recently, George Clooney produced a film "Intolerable cruelty" that was a tribute to the italian cinema of the 60es and he played a role that imitated a lot Alberto Sordi and his style. And George knows very well the massive filmography of Alberto.

A friend found Miracle Mile on VHS in a bargin bin of a garage (gas station) in the UK (Mid 90s). We were at film school and none of us had ever heard of the film, it became one of my favourites. I Also love any film with Tangerine Dream sound track, it contributes a lot more to the feeling than typical scores.
